bob johnson I could recommend a ton of bands, but I think Be'lakor and Omnium Gatherum (and Insomnium of course) are some of the best at melodic death metal.

Whenever you are song writing do you think about it scale wise, or does it just come to you by mindlessly goofing off on the guitar? Please respond because I am mindless when it comes to riff writing.

Neither really. I usually come up with a riff in my head, and then I record it after it's been stuck in my head awhile. I don't really put too much thought in the scale or timing, I just try to replicate what's in my head. That's why it's hard for me to song write while I'm just playing around on the guitar because I end up getting distracted from what I was trying to record.
