We are getting close to the finish line in terms of maintenance on this 2006 BMW E46 M3 that was purchased from the Copart auction. In this video we tackle the rod bearings on the S54 engine. We decided to go with VAC coated rod bearings as well as the ARP bolts, watch the video to see why we chose this combo. During the process we also replaced the power steering hoses since they were leaking along with a bunch of other maintenance. You can find links to the parts used as well as other videos down below:

Great vid guys! Sight unseen and shipped to you? That’s some serious trust. Over the years, you guys earned an outstanding reputation - highly competent & fair pricing. Honestly, can’t say the same for any other shop out there. Imho, to maintain S54 longevity, it’s imperative frequent oil changes with the right motor oil (synthetic 10W-60), properly warm up the engine oil before beating on it and after spirited drive, not a bad idea to allow the engine (and brakes) to cool down before shutting it off.
@herbienbrian2
@herbienbrian2 2 жыл бұрын
What should I use for my M50? I've been using 5w-30 synthetic and to be honest I'm not sure if the death rattle I'm constantly hearing is my Vanos or the rod bearings about to crumble. The oil always comes out clean no metal shavings, but as soon as the car comes up to temperature it sounds like a diesel. 🤢
@razorrich
@razorrich 2 жыл бұрын
@@herbienbrian2 Could be the motor oil weight. I highly suggest running Amsoil 5W-40 or Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-40. Both proven the best motor oils available for M50/ M54 motors. Also, make sure to run high octane fuel like Shell V-Power and from a quality station. Some branded gas stations fill their tanks with cheap off-brand fuel. Preventative maintenance/ maintenance such as rebuilding Vanos system is always a good idea. In the vid description, you’ll find a link to “Ask me a question.” That’s the fastest way to directly inquire with Jason/ Alpha Motorwerks the channel creator. I’m sure he can properly diagnose your problem. Good luck with resolving the issue.

Agreed on reasoning to use a stretch gauge. That said, using ARP's without resizing the rods is playing with fire. Perhaps (maybe) OK while driving Ms. Daisy, but caution against blindly following forum tribal knowledge. ARP's instructions clearly state to resize. Otherwise, you've helped me do a few jobs. Hey Jason. I have a question, my M54B25 valve cover seems to have an "issue". On the center stack bolts (middle ones) the 2 middle ones come out just fine, but the the farthest and the closest one facing the front of the engine I cant fit my 10mm socket on it.. the 10mm socket doesn't slide all the way down.. I dont know what to do.. Its almost like maybe its warped and stretched or something? I imagine I could maybe just shave down some of the material enough to get the socket to fit but I have owned a few e46's.. always in very good shape, low owners 2-3 at max so I am not sure why this one is like this? am I in for a new valve cover?? Thanks

When I did my rod bearings, @ 235K miles the bearing where changed at 80k but they looked good I used ECS WPC rod bearings and bought the ARP rod bolts but I did not plastigage or measure bolt stretch I thought with the ARP bolts I just had to torque them down, and didn't have to worry about stretch that was only on the factory bolts... But would you suggest I drop the subframe again and re-do them ? also I bought the ST suspension coilover kit and completely restored the car I have 10mm spacers on the rear. and after alignment was done professionally my passenger Front and Rear wheels stick in from fenders about 1 inch and on driver side are perfectly flush. Have you ever seen this before ? The car was never wrecked i rebuild front and rear subframe and reinforcement with full Garagistic kit . I know putting wheel spacers on one side is a no no.... if you have an email i could send you some pics.

ARP bolts are designed to do both stretch torquing and using ft. lbs. I believe that measuring stretch is the preferred method as it gives a more accurate tolerance for the bearing to work with, as nothing is quite perfect. I wouldn't worry about it at all, i'd say next time you do bearings you should use the stretch method though.
@andrewh2593
@andrewh2593 6 ай бұрын
Seems like you're prob good, but on the M11 style bolts on mine the ARP recommended torque was waaay off the target stretch. Rec torque got me 6/1000 and those require 7.5 - 8. But keep in mind if you use VAC bearings with extra clearance then 1/1000th really isn't all that much. The fact they say either method can be used by stretch is preferred should tell you all you need to know about how perfect this actually needs to be i.e. in the ballpark is fine.

@Gaara_du-desert. 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, very nice tuto. May I ask you why you did not use a “plastigage” to measure the clearance between the rod bearing and the crankshaft? And then choose the “right” bearings as there are 2 ratings, I think . Greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪
@VNEMUS
@VNEMUS 2 жыл бұрын
I believe Jason mentioned in the video the reasoning was the VAC bearings come extra clearanced, whereas they don't need to be plastigauged like you would on original stock rod bearing replacements.

It is safe to use ARP Bolts when using them properly and not over torquing them. In racing applications where the rod bolts are being removed frequently, this could potentially pose a concern, but usually in those applications you are probably going to upgrade rod and caps anyways.

Just a question, when or is there any need in changing the big end ones? can it be left as it is? I mean people do tend to recommend in just doing the main ones rather. 👀 Oh and maybe also replace the oil pump sprocket? Also notorious for undoing ⚙️

Oil change, Oil change, Oil change! I found it so sacrilegious that manufacturers decided to extend oil change intervals. I've taken several engines past the 300k mark and no issues whatsoever....... mind you it was a pain in the ass with the hundreds of oil changes in the middle of winter, but the end result is a hassle free engine.

You guys all need to use heavier oil to prevent wear in the first place, I say straight 30 weight is the minimum unless you really like working on those cars!! Better luck! :)

Most likely true, especially since it's a 6mt. A lot of the crank hubs that spin are during downshifts on DCT trans during spirited driving. I will be doing a good amount of maintenance and upgrades on the F80 this year, super excited!

In my opinion, you should LS swap the engine and cost about the same instead of having a shop charge all this money to replace rod bearings unless if you are not doing the work yourself just LS swap it! Lol

Jokes aside yea you can’t trust the bmw bearings on the e39/e46/e90 m3/m5. You need the BE bearings and arp bolts. That said bmw should be ashamed they didn’t even do any recall for the e90 and e60 owners. They got screwed

By the way my 2004 m3 did rod bearings at 26000km at dealer. Now has 420000km. Not a lie. How did it last this long? I beat the crap out of it but religiously warm up the oil temp. Still puzzled.

Hello is this something that constantly has to be done on these cars? What's the risk of buying a M3 with 187k where owner has not touched the bearings?
