I have played cricket for years (meaning 2 decades), and watched it for years (meaning significantly more than 2 decades) and had no idea there were so many cricket positions. I was super familiar with silly mid on and silly mid off as I had cat like reflexes as a young teenager and would often be placed there. But 9 slip positions, from slip one to slip nine? We generally just lumped them all together and called it slip. Thank you for that fantastic explanation. I knew cricket was difficult but this takes it past the level of chess.

Great explanation. All non cricketers are now saying WTF.😁 20 years of playing cricket and i saw all these positions used. Never at the same time of course. And for the non initiated there are only 11 players on each team with only 2 true set positions on the field. The bowler and the keeper.( yes, on extremely rare occasions no keeper is used..) The other 9 players are put into the various positions by the Captain of the team as he/she sees fit. Standard 9 positions would be 1-3 slips, Gully, Point, Square Leg, Fine Leg (Normally the alternate bowler) Mid On and Mid Off. Play ball.

I am very new to cricket in fact I have only played three matches. But I think this will help me lots because I only knew the positions of batsman,fielder,bowler, and Wk but this helped me realise there are lots of types of cricket fielders and also it showed me where too move and best spots for games. Being new to cricket, all the different fielding positions have been rather confusing. However, considering them as you do here -- with most of them being shifted placements of 8 main positions where the names depend on the direction of movement -- they make a lot more sense. Some of the names are still unusual to me, but if I can at least remember the 8 main positions and the shift directions, I should be able to make a lot more sense of things. Do you happen to have a good still image with this information that we could save for reference? Thanks!

A clean version of the last image in the video (without the blue lines you drew during the explanation) would work well, too, since it has all of the positions as well as the description of the terms.
