@@royfontaine5526 I got a nasty scrape on my bodywork on a lane in Cumbria that way. They had forced me past the first place I could have driven forward into by staying a couple of feet from my front bumper. When I got to the second potential passing place I felt forced to back in. I paid the price of forgetting there was likely to be stone just under the visible vegetation, unlike in the the lanes of Surrey that I was used to. I had a car full of elderly relatives, which both reduced visibility and stopped me from getting out and remonstrating with the oaf at the first passing place, as I might have done if it had just been me and my wife. At 4:31, saw a video on the Life of Darren channel, who's a HGV driver and faced a car driver in a similar situation. The car driver didn't know how to reverse to a wider space and while they did do their best and did eventually manage to reverse to wider section of road, it was painful viewing, for the whole section they looked like they were going to reverse into the bushes! For the purposes of the driving test, the most reversing someone practices while learning is reverse parking into a bay, parralel parking or a turn in the road / 3 point turn, so people aren't used to reversing over longer distances. More confident drivers will manage, but more nervous drivers, or those who are only comfortable driving a few set routes they drive regularly in a set manner get caught out and struggle.

2:01 This roundabout is in my hometown. The left turn is a 1 way system, and everyone takes the roundabout the wrong way if they are turning right. I have seen some people do a full turn, but people are aware of this and hold back. Only times I see people mess this up is when someone takes a wide turn and the driver behind thinks they are going straight on, which almost causes a side impact
@ClamityZerv2 күн бұрын
The clip at 2:00, I live in this local area and that mini roundabout displays everyones lack of understanding on how roundabouts work. I'm sure the one way exit on John's left throws everyone off. Also, the 3rd exit John takes is nearly impossible to take a better line around the painted roundabout without 1, confusing everyone else (they're not the smartest around here) and 2, making the turn in one fluid movement.
@goodyeoman45342 күн бұрын

It's called Roadcraft and/or Defensive Driving. The roundabout was a great example. How many clips are sent in of roundabouts being used as a overtake point, yet not the dual carriageway before. Yet in Vietnam roundabouts are used in single file by everything from a scooter to treble axle artics. The outer lanes are not used and so are inches deep in stones and dust. On the straight aways it's scooter right lane other vehicles to the next two lanes and that's just on an industrial estate.

12:00 I was once first to come across a horse and rider that had been hit on a single-track road, I often encountered vehicles driving way too fast on that road, the vehicle in question did not stop, it was a very unpleasant thing to encounter, the rider was badly hurt but survived, the horse was badly hurt but was put-down on-site later. Horses are not like bicycles, they need all the patience and space you can give them, I hope horse riders see a lot of patience and consideration from motor vehicle drivers, but I suspect not. (In this clip though I wonder how much the approaching vehicles could see on that bend, that Audi probably stopped in a good place for approaching vehicles to see them long before they'd see the horse and rider). the mini roundabout: it looks like it is a box van John is driving, i would personally still try to go round the roundabout in my van (which is a ford transit L2H2 Medium Wheel Base) and be cautious of the other vehicle emerging badly as it is a must go round the markings but there is an exemption if its a large vehicle that physically cant do it, i dont think the box van was large enough not to do it. @6:11, approaching a junction like that i would be watching the front wheel of the car and the crossing and whats behind other vehicles. that wheel should be stopped on the car waiting to emerge. if i see any movement on it then i know i have not been seen and would slow in anticipation and be ready to let the car out to fix the problem as some drivers will by accident or deliberately just force there way out and no point getting my vehicle dammaged over it, as page 42 says, give way to avoid an incident.

Driving up the M1 from J11a to J14 today, there were 2 accidents (one southbound and one northbound) causing delays and speed restrictions (40 mph limit for quite a stretch, although the flow was about 30 or less). Yet I witnessed some horrendously dangerous driving. One goods lorry tailgating cars, flashing his lights at them, and switching lanes into barely big enough gaps, all to go 2mph faster than the traffic flow. Then a car came hurtling by, swerving across all lanes through gaps that allowed no margin for error, overtaking and undertaking. Complete selfish madness by both drivers, along with several other examples of poor and selfish driving. I found it all quite depressing, so it was good to see this video and someone driving with the opposite mindset.

if its the HGV at the temp traffic light, if they dont go forward they risk not setting the sensor off to activate the traffic light and they also risk impatient drivers not seeing the bigger picture and start to overtake to squeeze into the space left by the lorry holding back. it could also be the lorry was following traffic through on a green light and the light changed and they did the best they could to not go through on red. its simple to say they should have but you canny should have done something, you either have or have not. setting the sensor off: i personally have had a situation where the waiting area for the light was on a bend because of a wide junction to the left for a temp traffic light, i was stopped behind the sign for stop here but it didnt set the light sensor off because i was too far back. this was on a 2 way set of temp traffic lights that were set to return to red when no motion. i would be sat there all day if i didnt move forward to set the sensor off. unless they are going to put a sign up saying sensor activated lights or timed constant lights for the temporary lights, you need to get close enough to activate the sensor.

Just wanted to mention about the dashcam used the azdome m550 (m550s for the back and front variant). Well worth the money from somewhere like AliExpress for around £50 2k front and 1080p rear. You've seen the quality now in day and night, a cheaper alternative than the channel sponsor

at 3:33 that is quite a dangerous situation because you can't see whether that's coming out of a drain or if the road's been eroded by it.

The miniature roundabout at 2:00, I use very often and that approach while technically incorrect is actually the default, everyone does it and it works, mostly because the road to the left is one way and therefore the roundabout functions more like a T junction where everyone gives way to the right. I appreciate of course this is just the locals, and really is born of laziness, certainly confusing to those unfamiliar with the road or simply wanting to take the roundabout properly.

John was speeding far too often. 27mph in a 20mph zone, 79mph on a motorway and on it went even though his hazard perception was excellent.
@almightyhydra2 күн бұрын
Meh. Speed limits are a mere approximation of a safe speed anyway. Provided you're not going unreasonably fast, mild speeding on a motorway is nothing. Those cars wandering between lanes (drunk?) are much more dangerous. 27 in a 20 could go either way. If it used to be a 30 limit and was reduced solely because of Labour government ideology (we've also been blessed with that in NZ, though thankfully the new government plan to undo the unnecessary changes next year), then I've every sympathy. Whereas 27 in a school zone during school pickup/dropoff hours is absolutely unacceptable.

@@almightyhydragreat common sense comment. Something that is lacking on this channel. As I always say, rules are for obedience of fools but the guidance of the wise.

9:15 Very highly likely a width restricted lane as it is in and around the vicinity of roadworks.

6:20 I notice the Astra that pulled out into traffic had a replacement nose, maybe not completely the sun at fault.

Can’t blame the sun anyway, I’m sure Ashley faces against the sun just like all of us and although he can never be flawless I’m sure he does just fine with it so it can’t be used as an excuse

i know that area 6:10 - crouch end in London, that junction, with the zebra next to it, is surprisingly awkward if youre coming out from the side road.

My dad always used to say asxwell to look out for a second blue light after first one went past!! I was going to commemt about moving back into lane 1 on two occasions but it seemed so petty compared to the high standard of looking far, far, ahead to assess conditions.
@kenbrown28082 күн бұрын
and conversely, emergency drivers will warn of being the second emergency driver as much more dangerous because of all the people who will barge out behind the first, without looking out for a second.

with that white vauxhall emerging badly at 6:14, i'd hazard to guess they've done something similar before and come a cropper as the front bumper has clearly been replaced with one from a breakers yard..
