as a very proud owner of the EBMM version let me say this was great. and OMG PATRICK for the first time in history a video was made about short scale basses that didn't include the ridiculous and insulting "for children and people with small hands" line 👍

@@mrgskye no, that isn't how it was at the start. the scale of the bass was very much not set in stone in the early days and was commonly played with. which is why 3 of the greatest bassist of all time (and dozens more) all played short scale: mccartney, wyman, and bruce.

there is tons of famous bassists that have played short scale, either exclusively or occasionally. I didn't mean to come down hard on the above poster. the p and j did become the accepted scale but there was also a ton of short scale models early on (including fender), probably made to appeal to guitar players. which makes sense, because if you were trying to make a child's instrument why would you make it so big? 28" or 30" is still a long scale for a seven year old.

Just picked up a used one for $229 at my local GC - same version/color as in this video. So stoked on the deal, but the bass is easily worth every penny of the list price!

, I feel unreasonably lucky. I’ve been playing it so much though that I would pay $600 any day for it. I actually decided to upgrade the pickup to a Nordstrand and I’m having an Epiphone Mudbucker installed in the neck position too 😅

I now have 4 of these exact same bass’s, one black, one white, one blue and now my recently purchased Fiesta Red. I guess it goes without saying that I absolutely love these bass’s, a total blast to play, comfortable to play and they sound awesome going thru all my Hartke gear. My big collection of 4 and 5 string bass’s are all being sold. On a related note, I love that these bass’s are passive, I’m not a big fan of active bass’s. Thanks for doing another video of the short scale Stingray, almost didn’t recognize ya with the beard.

The 2nd bass that I've purchased based on Patrick's review. Just got in-hand today (well, yesterday, it's now early morning as a result) and am very impressed with this instrument. Roasted maple neck is fantastic (do wonder why only offered on SS red body tho . . . ), has 6-bolt sturdy construction you can feel, and sounds great unplugged. Just high-quality, and even came with a fresh new set of Ernie Ball slinky's, so all to the good. Gonna go play some Rage riffs now. Thanks muchly.

I had bought a SBMM Ray35HH (in GORGEOUS Pearl White) when they came out, and then just a few years ago, I had played a SBMM Short Scale Sting Ray, and it has HAUNTED me to this day! They feel fantastic, they sound even better, you miss nothing by it being passive! Fast-forward: I modified my Ray35HH, moving the neck pickup right next to the bridge pickup (like a Warwick $$), and I am in the process of converting it over to passive electronics, with the controls being Volume (Neck), Volume (Bridge), Tone (Neck), Tone (Bridge), and rather than having the 3-way blade switch, I widened the screw holes for it slightly, and put in 2 3-way mini switches - one per pickup - for Series/Single/Parallel. Great video and great first name!

I finally tracked down a passive short scale EBMM Tim Commerford Stingray (#23 of 50) in a guitar shop in Tallinn, Estonia. I restrung it with La Bella 760F-MUS through-body flats. Add in the per-string mutes, adjustable height finger ramp and its really short reach to the first fret, and i've got a bass that I just love. It plays beautifully and sounds fantastic. I've heard great things about the imported Sterlings, so I don't think you're giving up a lot by not getting an Ernie Ball 'ray. You're for sure spending a LOT less money.

I have an Ibanez BTB and i love it, the 3 band eq is great and it has almost unlimited tonal options, but i find myself wanting a passive bass with trick wiring like the series/parallel and coil splitting options that you don’t see on most active basses

A single 4-conductor pickup positioned in the sweet spot is generally all a player will really need...I can't help but think this is musicman's response to the g&l fallout

I sold one of these older 1st gen SS basses because it was chunky feeling (mahogany body), poorly finished frets, and it just felt gimmicky compared to some of the more well-made instruments rolling out today.

They're still like that imo. I've used both the sterling short scale and the official EBMM ones and the difference is so apparent when you compare the two. The glue on the nut was done terribly on the sterling, and I had to get the frets leveled since it was such a pain to get a good setup. They are great mod basses though! Once I got the frets leveled, the knobs fixed, and the pickup upgraded it plays just as nicely as the EBMM version and still cost less than US version. I love both of em. The US ones though have way better neck finishes and color options.

SBMM you said stood for Sterling By Music Mann, I thought it was Sterling Ball Music Mann. Also, wondering if Nyatoh is pronounced Na-Toe or like you said Na-Ay-Toe? I dig the riffs you come up with, kind of reminds me of a punk/metal guitarist.
