As I was watching this, I could help think about Leo Fender's legacy. He was Fender, G&L and Musicman. Quite a visionary with regard to guitars and basses, etc. Thanks LEL.

Another great video Lobster! I have to go with the G&L on this one. Both are great sounding basses, but the pickup placement, and pickup type on the G&L give the tone more girth - especially in 'OMG' mode. Of course it will depend on the room, signal chain, and sound tech's ears as to what it would sound like on a gig, but I'd still go with the G&L. P bass on steroids' as someone said. Thanks again, and cheers for now!

I decided to buy one these sterlings about a month ago. I use it wayyy more than my jazz bass now With my set up it’s become the perfect go to. I love feel of the neck, I dialed in a tone I like on the parallel setting and i throw the treble and eq up on my amp. Makes it sounds super growly. It’s made me a short scale lover. I’d buy the G&l too when I get some extra cash.

@@LowEndLobster it's okay, I'm probably gonna break down and buy the other Valley Arts Samick that I found. Wanted the green one, but black is pretty cool (the only reason I haven't yet is that I LOATHE buying on reverb because everything always arrives fucked up 9/10x). The red one tho...this thing is stupid fun to play unplugged so you know it's gonna be great amplified ha ha ha I don't need another one but this one is such a great player - much better than I had hoped, even better than I visualized lol At 3 bills mostly what I have to do is find space. But I don't think you're going to get a 5 string Lee Sklar like thing unless you go with his current sponsor because of course you can get a 5 string from Dingwall; I don't think a bonafide 5 string Lee Sklar Valley Arts sig model exists and the transition units have the correct paint but the necks are scarfed so they're the Korean/Samick necks painted in US as likely so the first full rev of the Valley Arts pro custom models are the best compromise - they're built like a fucken tank so there's no worries there, durably built but no extra weight. Just feels SOLID as fuck and my god it came with flatwounds and it just SINGS and THUMPS with a pick, holy fuck some basses are just better for pick action, I can say that with certainty now - even though it finger rips and slaps just beautifully, drop that hand down by the bridge and start banging it with the pick and DA MAJICKS dome come out this offshore knockoff from another momoff. The spark is in the guts of the axe, not the paint on the headstock. that sub24 black ash platform would scream with ANY mods in it. You got a beautiful core instrument to load whatever you want in it. It's not going to sound the same in another husk, that solution. But you knew that and that's why you picked THE ASH HAMMER to give the SUPER BEEF INJECTION.

Great shootout Lobster! Both nice basses and for me, the Fallout is more my thing. Brief observation...I think the Fallout is the only G&L model where that usually odd headstock with the pointy bit makes sense. I like the way it's been altered for the shorter scale here making it work really well with the placement of the Fallout logo. Nice! 👌

Loved the MFD in my Fallout so much that I went and put the p-style MFD in my Fender P. Both are just so phenomenal sounding. So powerful and creamy. For me the Fallout is best because I love the wider nut width (feels more like my P basses) and I don't mind losing 3 frets because I really never use those frets. The size is also not an issue for me because I am used to long scale basses and this is my first short scale. An amazing bass but Iit comes down to personal preference. I think the sound of the G&L pickup can't be beat.

It's really a matter of which pickup placement you prefer. I like the Stingray placement when it's other people who are playing it, but when it's me, I definitely prefer the middle pickup placement on the G&L. For a short-scale bass, I'll take a longer, narrower layout over a shorter, fatter one every time. My #1 is a Mustang. #2 alternates: Jazz bass for feel, P bass for sound. I've been considering a Fallout for a while.

2 years I bought both and ended up keeing the G&L. The G&L can sound monstrous, as your video shows. i think the G&L clearly wins for tone. But I'm thinking with the right Kemper Profile they can sound the same or very close. I'm going try the MM Sterling shorty again because I have ongoing Low E string issues, and the G&L is bigger and heavier. I'm putting some Ernie Ball Slinky's on the G&L and hoping that helps. Recently tried a full scale Headless Ibanez EHB1500 that was lighter and shorter than the G&L. Unfortunately the wide neck was a deal breaker.

I've been listening and reading comments. The G&L has so much more 'boom' and body to my ears, but I feel like it would quickly clip into my Rumble 100. I'd rather turn up the amp than lower the bass' volume. As a guitar player with a bad back, and being short, I think I'll be very happy with the MM. I've got two Jazz Basses. ONE a 2013 MIM and I just bought a used 2000 MIA. Now that I'm playing more bass, it's wreaking havoc on my back and neck. Lastly, I think the Stingray looks more balanced. I've got few MM guitars and when I've seen vids and pics of me on stage, the MMs just look better fitted to my height. So all added together, it's the Stingray by a Texas mile. Thanks for a fantastic comparo Lobster!

Both are cool in their own way; people may or may not want to consider that G&L instruments tend to be very hard to re-sell on the used market or rather they are easy to sell at a big loss unlike F, G and MM brands. Not the prime consideration at this price point but just pointing out from my experience.

I feel like the sound of the G&L is like. The Ultimate "Bass" sound. Like it takes what you think of in a Bass sound(mostly a P-Bass, but with some stingray and jazz too) and just OOOMPHS it. The Stingray though is a lot more convenient and has that crisp articulation that makes it easy to forget it's a passive, plus it's surprisingly thumpy! The rolled off tone noise is pretty strange on the Stingray but kinda cool

Each bass has sounds and features that I like and each one has things about it that I don’t. I’d go with the stingray simply because I have more experience with musicman than G&L , so it’s a “the devil you know” type situation. Plus they didn’t skimp on the number of frets. I appreciate the portability of the stingray but on the minus side , I find the compactness makes it feel cramped. I suppose it’s both a plus and a minus. The G&L probably feels more natural to a long scale player due to the physical dimensions but that can also be seen as a minus because I personally would not want a short scale bass that’s just as physically large as a std. 34”. What’s the point? I’d just get a long scale! Also 19 frets is a bit limiting to me . They could have put at least 20 like every standard fender bass!

Tonewise, I think they both sound pretty good. I like the clarity of the Stingray a bit more. As far as ergonomics and looks, I think the Stingray wins all around. One of the advantages of a short scale bass is the compact size, lower weight, and shorter reach with the left arm. I think G&L dropped the ball in this department. It's almost like they went out of their way to design the bass to play and feel more like a full scale bass. The reach is about the same as a full scale. So, why bother getting a short scale if it feels just like a standard scale? No advantage. So... my vote goes to the short scale Stingray because that bass, ergonomically, is about the most compact, short left-hand reach of any short scale bass I've played. I've had a half dozen Fender Mustangs (decent basses, especially the American Performer), a Spector Bantam (very nice, modern bass), Mensinger Cazpar 5-String (very nice), Kiesel short scale Vader, and both American and Indonesian Stingrays. I've played the Fallout and the short scale Reverends. Out of all of them, the ergonomics on the short scale Stingray wins, hands down. The most compact "standard configuration" short scale out there. Of course, the Vader is headless, so it's super compact, but not "standard configuration."

I don't know, I guess it really comes down to personal tastes and what style of music you are playing. The G&L sounded deeper and more rootsy, kinda like what you expect from a short scale. The SBMM sounded like the typical cut thru the mix and slap you in the face Stingray. Personally, I would probably choose the G&L for three reasons, first and foremost because I already have a Stingray 5, second I love the look of the candy apple red finish with perloid pickguard, and third I'm a big guy and the SBMM would probably look ridiculous on me.

I dont know how much I like OMG overall, just that it stands out above the Ray in series. I dont play many Short Scale basses, and I have an Ibanez Mikro (for when my daughters decide to play), and it is truly A Mikro, in the sense that it is super short at 28.5” (might be 28.8 or something, but yeah, its small), but overall, I am happy playing standard scale basses. I do prefer a Jazz neck (Sterling neck, Ray4 neck, SLO neck is how EBMM and SBMM call Jazz necks) to Standard Ray or a P neck, but never played a fatter neck on a neck with short scale fret spacing, so, who knows, I might actually like that. That said, My main bass is a Ray4 modded with Aguilar pick up, and I play it more then all my basses. 2nd would be my EBMM Stingray SLO Special (SLO’s are stingray with a jazz neck) and love it too. After that my #3 is an ESP LTD B4-E. It is a neck thru, and I love neck thru, it is my favorite neck joint. I then have a Sterling Stingray Ray34 that has a standard Stingray neck on it. I think the Ray 34 and my Dean MetalMan M (a bass shaped like Dimebag’s guitars) are the only fat necks I have. I will say, when I started playing, I loved the narrow and thin necks, but when I got more experienced, I a,m starting to appreciate the fatter necks. So I now want to get. P bass. I have one, but its a Pete Wentz Squire Signature P bass, volume knob only. I love it, sounds and plays great too, but again, its a Jazz neck on aP body, so I still want a P with a P neck. Great video. I do want to play G&L at some point. Hell, they are made about 30 miles from my house (the USA shop) and Just found out there is a Premiere g&L dealer called AB Music just a few miles away, so, After seeing many of your G&L videos, I need to get my ass over there and give them a play. I will still be a Stingray fan, but there is room for a lil G&L love. Might as well have all Leo brands in my collection. Thanks Lobster, great job.

Playing sitting down the Sterling is pretty cramped for me. Really want to try a Fallout but no one is carrying them locally. Next time Sweetwater has them in I might drive three hours to try one.

My main bass is the EBMM Stingray short scale. The SBMM sounds a lot like the US built model. I would choose the Stingray in a second. The G&L sounded good but the ergonomics seem odd to me. Why build a short scale that is virtually the same size as a full scale?
@markperry7655

It’s pretty heavy too, not enough to be a game changer, feels pretty good. I gather the main idea was to make it appeal to people used to full scale basses. I find palm muting a lot more comfortable on my Fallout than on any normal bass. The bass likes to stay mostly horizontal on a strap, but the low notes are much closer so that’s not too big a problem.

The G&L sounds better but for a long gig I'd likely enjoy the Sterling more simply due to the upper horn being longer. I generally find short horn basses to be less comfy for me personally. I love these VS videos. Btw!

Yeah, you can't get more thorough. 3 diff styles and 3 diff tone settings per style (for LONE pup basses), and 2 x that for 2 pups basses. Plus HONEST opinions. You really cant get that in-depth of a demo by shortening it too much.

My Fallout likes to balance horizontally on a strap, which is less of an issue as the low notes are still much less of a reach than on a full scale.

I have a question...The Sterling Ray 4 HH is out for $380. With an extra huge HB in the neck would it throw out powerful mids closer to the G&L? I feel it should throw out more than the EBMM SS...AND, since the Sterling makes such efficient use of it's space, would this 34" model be close to the G&L in overall length and playing position?
@LowEndLobster

Great question Bflo! Great question. Yes the fallout size and feel wise is probably closer to the full scale stingray. The Short scale Stingray is TINY but I find it comfortable

Thank you! Great question. Check out the individual reviews of each for more info. Overall, the G&L was a little divier because of how the neck sits a bit further out vs the stingray. Hope that helps!

I'm a bit disappointed from the Fallout. Does a short scale with the same size than a standard bass make sense? And I like the Stingray Shorty, the tone is really close to full size Stingray, I did not expect that because of the smail size and the lower string tension.
@phipschi4255

it does actually, for people which prefer to have a full sized instrument in their hands but with the added playability of a shorter neck (closer distance from fret to fret)

Seems like the construction, along with the pickup, gives the G&L a much fuller sound. Especially when slapping you hear the bottom kinda falls out, on the Stingray. G&L sends me back to the old funky P players, the Headhunters, Crusaders, etc. I actually find the difference huge, in favor of the G&L

Which one did YOU prefer Lobster? I bought the fallout before MM had released the short scale in hopes that the g&l would sound like a stingray. Boy was I wrong so I just had to buy the sterling as well. I think the sterling definitely does the stingray thing. I love it! Can't bring myself to sell the g&l however, it's such a nice and unique bass for what it does.

I own the Sterling Short scale but if I could do it over again I'd pass on it and anti up to the USA version if I wanted another shortscale. The G&L does a really good job of doing the P bass thing whereas the Sterling does a somewhat poor job of doing the Stingray thing. Not that it sounds bad, it's just does its own thing. With owning 2 Stingray Specials I can tell you that if you are after that Stingray sound the Sterling won't cut it for you, but you still may like it for what it is. The tuners are aweful though, and fret work sub par. All of my tuners had loose ends and the replacements Sterling finally sent me after 3 emails waiting for a response are just as bad.
