It’s because his gang is comprised of infighting cutthroats, who only serve him for mutual benefit, there’s not much legitimate loyalty there, even the Octoboss & his Mortifiers/Mortiflyers defected by the time Furiosa reached adulthood. All of these issues explain why he wasn’t able to keep a hold on Gastown like Joe’s accomplices could. Dementus is the complete opposite of Joe, who’s fanatical cult followers are willing to live and die for him, which is why Joe is able to keep an (albeit tyrannical & immoral) order in his neck of the Wasteland.

@@danieltobin4498 To get a sense of scale and things falling apart over the 20+ years the Mad Max films take place, in Mad Max around Sun City (presumably a stand in for Melbourne--Max's house is by the sea), Toecutter's gang was maybe 12-24 bikers. By Dementus's time I think they said he had around 1,000 people following him.

I wouldn't say he's incompetent. Just that he bit off more than he could chew. If it wasn't for Furiosa, he would have had a decent shot at overthrowing Immortan Joe at the end. He already took over the bullet farm. All he needed was the Citadel.

Wonder what’s the deal with the cape. It kinda looks like it was made from a parachute. Like, maybe at one point he was a soldier and that parachute saved his life, and he came to the conclusion that Fate had saved his life for greater things, and so now he wears that cape everywhere as a reminder of his luck and predestined rise to greatness, that he’s untouchable so long as he believes in his own decisions and his willingness to follow through on them, no matter what his enemies throw at him.
