Gruit predates Roman rule. Gruit was a loose term used for mixtures of regional herbs and spices gathered seasonally throughout Europa. It was stored in gruit houses and each region used different recipes rooted in what grew locally. The ales made using gruit were nutrient and medicinal enzyme rich probiotic beverages that acted as daily medicine. It empowered people and made them healthy and increased their vitality. The gathering of gruit was a seasonal activity that connected the people with the land and allowed villages to use their gruit supply in trade. The brutal Roman empire saw the profitability in controlling gruit supplies throughout Europa and claimed it as "there's" under their regime. They did not destroy the gruit industry, but enslaved it as they did with most things. It was the reinheitsgebot or "purity order" implemented by German rule as early as 1516 that began the destruction and outlaw of gruit used in ale in regions formerly under Roman rule. The reinheitsgebot limited, by law and enforcement of German rule, the ingredients that could be used in beer (or bier) brewing for several reasons. It gave them control of the grain industry, and reduced human vitality by using only a mild sedative with high levels of phytoestrogen as flavoring and tannic preservative, thus dulling the spirit of the masses. Gruit houses were destroyed and made illegal to operate. This contributed to over production of homogenized grain, and to our modern disconnect of regional and seasonal plant medicines. This hollow sedative was then spread throughout the planet in place of indigenous medicinal fermentations in the colonial force of "purity" leading to illness of indigenous populations wherever it supplanted local medicines. Hops have wonderful medicinal effects when used specifically and in moderation, but that is not how beer has been used historically.

Thanks Yarrow. I am sitting here in Calgary right now drinking an *aqueous* infusion wherein I take Mountain Rose dried hops cones and set them in boiling water overnight in a sealed glass container. Always works for me to relax me for bed the next night. Now I know that ethanol should work better as a solvent. Funny, I really like the bitter tastes and unique aroma whereas many of my house guests dislike it (yet they can tolerate beer which I cannot).

At 6:20 you mention that beer is often used to wipe away sorrows. This reminded me of an interesting fact I read in Medical Herbalism by David Hoffmann - hops are contraindicated for people with depression as consumption of hops may exacerbate symptoms. This fact has lead me down quite a few interesting trains of thought...

Those hops look still v green, I find if I harvest them just after the strobiles have started to turn golden, this maximises the resin content. A bit like waiting till cannabis bud hairs go orange/brown to get maximum resin.

totally, hops is an awesome herb for use during labour. I think about is a great way to do it that’s always a tincture or even a high hopped beer. @@liztowers2058 allergic reactions usually involve systemic inflammation and things like hives/rash and/or sinus reactions but no I just felt utterly drugged, and not in a good way. Maybe someone spiked the hops at the health food store, who knows but I remember reading that it wasn't uncommon ,for the ones harvesting hops, to pass out. There is an ancient painting of a maiden fainting with her basket of hops, which I found interesting. Have also heard that hops are very estrogenic but don't know if this is related to the hypotension I experienced and fainting issue or not.
