Could you carbonate with a Sodastream or do you think that would impart too much of that soda water flavor to it by gassing it so quickly?

@@Lucifurion I had the same question. I just tried a mason jar (4 cups) of water with 1 gram of hops. I'm hoping to carbonate with a soda stream, or make a concentrate water of the recipe to add to soda water.

Thanks! Your simplified versions were helpful! Just out of my own curiosity and because I don't have a carbonator, I made a down and dirty, super low-tech back alley version of your recipe by dry hopping cascade with lime and funneling into store bought seltzer water at a 1 part dry hop/ 8 part seltzer ratio. I was a happy man, and it gave me a quick idea of what hop water could be. Bravo! Gracias!

My guess with lagunitas is that they'd add live slurry to be filtered out later - because the slurry is active it should be able to break the glyosidic linkages? (just a guess)

Great video! Have to cut back my drinking and having 4 beers on tap at my bar is a problem. I enjoy the taste of the sierra nevada but not the price! Gonna fill up a corny with this recipe. Being that its 5 gallons would you adjust anything in the recipe? I was not sure if I needed more seeping time or anything.

LOVE this video. I can't wait to try this method. I have only tried the steeping method and Its always been quite hoppy, too much honestly. I did notice a big improvement in using whole cone hops over pellets as the pellets tend to degrade and more hop matter gets into suspension. I've bottled the water and over time a noticeable amount of hop sediment settles on the bottom of the bottle and the hoppy flavor intensifies.

What if you filter the water through filter paper (like coffee filter) before carbonation. You will get rid of the solids and still retain a good flavour.

Looks good! I went way overboard with the hops on my last one. For a 5 gallon batch I did 1.5 oz in a hot steep, then added another 2 oz directly to the keg. I guess more is not always better! I ended up dumping half the keg. I think Lagunitas has some type of a no-calorie sweetener added and it comes across to me more like a no-calorie lime soda with a touch of hops. The Sierra Nevada one seems more like a straight hop + water drink.

@@TheBruSho Ya they do a different special release every month if you get their subscription but I have only tried the ones they have in the stores. I wish their tap room was still open to visit it in Boulder. I also found that when adding minerals to the hop water it also added a metalic off-flavor and sometimes with the hop astringency if you give it a few days it can mellow out in the fridge.

Thanks for the video. I'm planning a hop water having enjoyed the commercial versions too. I thought I'd mention the yeast possibly used for biotransformation. Vermont strain from escarpment, foggy London ale from imperial, etc. (Often the hazy strains) These types of strains "biotransform" terpenes and free thiols into intense tropical flavors and that is what makes them special. Hops like Citra and mosaic have a high quantity of these compounds relative other hop varieties, which might be why it is used. There are also some engineered yeasts (cosmic punch or thiol libre) that can access both free and bound thiols/terpenes that might be worth a shot. Generic and inexpensive hops like cascade can give you a heavy guava note with these yeasts

With your final recipe, when you infuse the hops with water for 6 hours, is there an optimal temperature your water should be? I assume room temperature is probably the best for good extraction of flavours. If I don't have a carbonation keg, would a sodastream bottle and machine work to carbonate? Obvious you need to refrigerate the water first before carbonation, otherwise the gas won't dissolve well.

I am trying your idea but with lemon peels, lactic acid, and with one ounce of hops but for only 20 minutes and a little warm hop addition… then straining through a coffee filter. Wish me luck. I might have to dilute 😂 maybe it was too many hops but also the contact time isn’t as long. Then just a squirt of liquid stevia might be good at the end. Great video!!! Am I the only one in the world who avoids those motueka hops? I've used them twice and had 2 beers taste like straight dish soap! Definitely one I stay away from! 😂😂😂 I'd love to be able to send someone a few south African hops they are all super tropical and fruity but ive never seen them used internationally.

Thanks! I brewed a beer a little while back with Southern Passion and it was really bursting with tropical flavor. South African hops deserve more shine!

You need a newer soda stream - we have one of the originals and anything other than water makes a HUGE mess! The newer ones advertise that you can carbonate beverages with other ingredients. (Think of not yet carbonated home brew dripping from the ceiling….. yikes!)

GREAT video (you’ve got yourself a new subscriber) I’m making hope water right now, and was planning on running this exact test! I highly recommend you check out Art of Drinks method for making hop water! Would love to see a similar comparison using that method!

yeast does impart flavors to the water, much like vegetarians use brewers yeast on spaghetti to imaprt a cheese type flavor. So when they say yeast, there are many different types, jsut my guess here.

ha I mean you could totally bump up the hops if you want. I found that was a good amount that didnt add too much bitterness. But totally tweak it to your preference.
