I love this idea too! Especially building your soil in a self-sustainable way. I feel like the pressure to spend money bringing in loads of compost, manure, and soil can be a lot when growing large gardens. Outside of crop rotation, and home composting, what else can we do in a fairly affordable way to help build our soil health?

Starting your own compost is a great way to start having your own nutrient rich fertilizer. Also, over the fall/winter when leaves fill up my beds I add extra on top. Near the end of the season, close to time to clean up the garden, I flip the leaves into the dirt. All that beautiful fungi, and nutrient spread throughout the dirt and continue to feed your garden through the season. I'm a lazy fertilizer, not going to lie. And throwing compost directly into your beds during the off season and flipping it into the dirt adds a nice punch. Just some fertilizer for thought lol.

I know you've talked about them and I've loved those videos. What I want is for you to take one of the original greenstalks from planning to planting and the care of thru the season, what you would do if that's all the space you had. I have 2 and a few grow bags, I would love to work along with you like that. What you would plant, how you would arrange the plants based on how they grow. This is only my second gardening season. I have a rule that i'm not allowed to look at seed catalogs until the new year so that I have something to look forward to after the holiday while its still cold. i'm still holding out that my last few broccoli in a cold frame will finish growing before i hit the consistent teens. this is the time of year that i go back and watch old garden tours from years past to re-excite my love of my "Wildest Ones Garden" and plan all the beauty and food together! thanks Jess!

Here’s a video/series idea. First a little backstory: I live in Southern CA and I eat mostly plant based. I try to grow as much as I can in my tiny backyard garden. Following you has been so encouraging to my heart and my (now) green thumb! Thank you for repeating content because you remind me when I should be doing what, each season! I need that. I have two 4x4 raised beds, two 2x2 raised beds and two GreenStalks. I make most of my own soil by composting in place and using mostly shredded paper, garden scraps and kitchen scraps. It’s alive and it works! Anyway, I would love to see more videos on growing successfully in my GreenStalks since my food grows “ok” but it’s always small despite my use of organic liquid fertilizer. Also, videos on growing maximum yields in small (urban) garden beds for cheap. Because…inflation 😬.

So I am a very experienced gardener who lives in a totally different zone from you. However, it is always helpful to hear about others experiences with different seeds/plants, perhaps what they have learned over the years that may differ from "conventional" wisdom or advice. That is one of the joys of gardening - you never stop being surprised or amazed by something you hadn't experienced before. Sounds like you had a lovely Christmas - we also had a very low key couple of days and it was wonderful.

My seedling peppers and tomatoes are up! Some of the herbs have sprouted, the celery is up. I garden in 9a in Tucson. We just had our first frost last night. I had all my tomatoes and flowers covered and all are fine. It will be harvest time for broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower this weekend. Cover crop will go in for a couple months and then it will be time to plant out the starts! Garden season really never ends here!

I am jealous. Where we are here in NW AZ it's too cold for vegetables in the ground and I do not have a cold frame or greenhouse/hoop house. We have had several frosts and it was 28 F this AM at eight O'clock!

Hey there from upstate 9b we are above Lake Havasu, and just picking tomatoes that are just ripening! So much grows all year, cauliflower is just starting to head and my lettuce patch is 6 inches tall!

Hawks are amazing, but I adore the owl who has now become a resident in our itty bitty in the city homestead. It’s such an absolute compliment each time the eco system grows around us. I’m going to miss it dearly and I hope the next person enjoys it

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the same garden content each year/season. Please bring us along as you plan, start seedlings etc. I could honestly listen to you while you fold laundry. It’s like hanging out with your BFF. Plus I’ve only been starting my own seed for 2 years now and still feel that I have a lot to learn. I would also enjoy additional content on composting and amending my raised beds when there are limited resources available to me naturally. Even though we are in a farm with animal waste, I feel that we’re missing some critical key part of what we should do. Since having Lyme the past 10+ years my brain doesn’t function great at retaining what I read, so I’m still struggling with proper adequate composting and building no dig beds. We want to increase an “in ground” area of no dig beds and I’m uncertain on exactly how we should start. Thanks 😊

This past Spring I couldn't tell if a seedling was a volunteer tomato or marigold. I was confused, because it was a pot that I experimented with growing 2 tomato plants in. I had to replant my entire tomato crop that year & they didn't have time to produce a lot where one would've fallen in, but a critter did steal one & could've dropped a seed. Google Image & even a plant ID app gave me all different kinds of ID's. None of them correct, lol. Even the people in my gardening group couldn't agree, some were even telling me that it was something poisonous that doesn't even grow near me. So I let it grow. It turned out to be a marigold from one of the previous year's seeds that somehow made it into that pot from where I was growing them. It amazed me how much it looked like a tomato seedling to me though. LOL!

I hope everyone was has had a wonderful Christmas. I'm so excited for the gardening year, I've had my seeds out several times setting aside stuff I want to grow next year. My goal is to get the shed cleaned out and organized so I can start my peppers and tomatoes in there this year. I need to clean and sanitize my pots too. Last year I think I had some kind of bacteria or disease that was killing my seedlings because I wasn't washing my containers after I used them. My goals this year are to plant more mindfully and to work more toward preserving my harvest. I ended up composting or giving away stuff because I wasn't motivated enough to do anything with it or I had so much I got overwhelmed. We also had a family of mice eating up stuff and that was discouraging. I'm definitely planting less okra this year. I am trying to plant more things I know my family likes and I'm going to give them the space to thrive instead of crowding so much stuff together. Wish me luck because ADHD gardening can be a struggle.

I’ve spent this Christmas down with a nasty case of COVID. It’s hasn’t been all bad though. I sat in the bed, binge watching old garden tours and meticulously planning my garden. All while enjoying food my dad dropped off for me. So this garden year should (in theory) be my most organized of all time!! 😂

hi jess 🤗 you got a lot of rain. i was dreaming about gardening all last week. i was so excited to wake up every morning-like the first day of grade school 😂🤣. as a result, i got a lot of gardening work done, including sowing seeds in one of my raised beds 12/26. today there's a good amount of rain, so i covered the bed with cardboard so the seeds don't wash away. yes, abundance is a blessing and at the same time, i have cried from being overwhelmed (that's what sharing is for). ive been watching you for years and your talks never feel old or stagnant. tfs

I’ve got some episode ideas- - winter sowing - natural pest control, specifically how to keep termites from chowing down on wooden raised beds - how to prepare for a fall garden, because I always have the good intention, but can never seem to get it to actually produce anything - favorite gardening products (tools, clothing, seed catalogs, miscellaneous) - least favorite gardening products (that perhaps could help others avoid wasting $ on) - best gardening choices you’ve made and worst fails - ideas beyond what you’re making on your other cool channel of what to do with an over abundance of each veggie (I’m always wondering to myself, “What does she do with all that kale, pumpkin, and tomato etc?”)

Just subbed. I’m an old girl in Texas 8b now and enjoy watching others do what I did when I was younger. I love getting my hands dirty still. My life now exists of 2 ft raised beds, a 10x20 greenhouse and chickens…throw in a couple Muscovy and I’m done.

That one lazy day!!!!🎉 It was glorious... Leftovers for the win! Ham, egg and cheese sliders, and turkey egg noodle soup! Now onto finish my sewing projects and planning my potagerGarden. I believe a no fuss one this year. Grow the tomatoes, cucumbers that I like. More herbs adventures! But more cut flowers this year! As a family of 2, we've found that our freezer, canning is full. What we have an abundance of people don't really cook anymore... I have considered allowing the garden the 7th year rest, except for those tomatoes 🍅 😉
