Super belated, but I tested each battle as presented in the anime in Gen I via Pokémon Showdown. If you’d like details, I’d be super happy to share the results (spoilers: Ash actually could’ve pulled out his Gym wins in game terms, barring some liberties).
@VSNetwork6 жыл бұрын
Of course, I would like to know the details about it! I am sure that it was a lot of work but fun to do it, wasn't it?
@mayborneflower6 жыл бұрын
Pika Town Mostly fun. There were some snags. Brock, Round 1: This rocky start... went surprisingly smooth. As it happens, Ash actually could’ve beaten Brock (going by the assumption that his moves for Geodude and Onix at the time were identical to what they were in Pokémon Yellow version) based on Pidegeotto having Sand Attack and Pikachu, as a fresh Starter, having Growl and Tail Whip... and presumably Quick Attack (which went ignored until Lt. Surge) for default moves. While the fight would be tedious, Pidgeotto mucking up accuracy while Pikachu diminishes the Physical stats proves a great team effort. Onix ironically proves to be the easier of Brock’s team for lacking a stat-raise move, having a comparatively lower Attack stat, and for the 1-in-4 chance of using the largely harmless Bide, which opens him up especially hard for Accuracy and Defense drops for at least two turns. Brock, Rounds 2 & 3: As a result of beating the initial bout, I was beyond free to just skip the rematches entirely. Misty: Misty turned out to be tougher than initially expected... in part to the fact that I resorted to just giving her the Yellow Version moves wholesale to fill her attacking options. On top of also, letting Misty have free switch outs to match the anime. Thankfully, Butterfree’s access to Sleep Powder (which, due to having Tackle as a sole attacking option on top of entirely ditching his Caterpie and Metapod moves, was all he was good for) while Pidgeotto’s superior attacking ability and implied retention of Sand Attack proved invaluable, even in spite of Starmie’s Harden. Tough but manageable. Lt. Surge, Round 1: One clean hit from Mega Punch or Mega Kick with a Critical ensures Raichu’s easy victory, enough said. Lt. Surge, Round 2: THIS was the problem child of the whole Kanto Anime Gyms run, as this expects a frail Pikachu (even one that’s been raised a level or two higher than Surge’s Raichu) to be able to score a Tail Whip or two and like eight full Quick Attacks before Surge (who has Body Slam and Thunderbolt for this rematch, each 100% Accurate) can score two hits at the most. Though by sheer implication from both battles, there is a saving grace for Pikachu; at the end of the first fight and near the start of the second, Pikachu tried and failed to tackle pounce at Raichu, which could be interpreted as learning the move Slam. Slam, despite its nonexistent canonical presence and poor accuracy both in and out of series, would prove to be Pikachu’s saving grace. Score two of it and then sneak in a Quick Attack for the cheap shot final blow, and Pikachu earns a legit win. In either of the two fights. Sabrina, Round 1: I took a liberty with this fight and jumped right to the Kadabra part of the fight. Pikachu stood no chance. Sabrina, Round 3 (because Ash ran out on the initial rematch): As another liberty, this fight was treated as a proper 2-on-2, with Sabrina’s Kadabra being treated as direct rips of her Abra and Kadabra from Yellow Version. Despite what the first bout from the anime (or Electric Tale of Pikachu) may indicate, there is no physical way even a Pikachu could lose to an Abra. All Ash would have to do to win is whittle down Abra without taking it out, switching to Haunter (whose Illusionary Ghost powers are treated as Hypnosis and Confuse Ray, maybe Dream Eater if his iconic Lick is ignored) to finish Abra off and then using Self-Destruct (how I interpret Haunter’s cartoon bomb trick; also, the TM for it is obtainable in Saffron City itself, so...) on Kadabra (who wouldn’t be able to knock out Haunter without a Critical-hit Psychic) for an easy one-hit kill. Erika: For this fight, I really just took Erika’s Yellow Version (yeah, turns out this recursive games-to-anime-to-game adaptation thing was beyond useful do this) team and slapped on an extra 15 Levels to the whole team. Honestly, I made this fight harder on myself than I should have (I treated Bulbasaur and Charmander as weaker than the Mankey/Primape, Level 41 encounter as Mankey, Ash caught right before this Gym; I also deprived Bulbasaur of its later used Sleep Powder) but still pulled through. Just had to use Pikachu to soften and hopefully Paralyze Tangela, send out Charmander to burn down Tangela and Weepinbell, and then bank on Bulbasaur’s resistances to Grass and Poison to run out Gloom if Charmander fails. Koga: For this one, I elected to composite the two battles Ash had with Koga and then upped the difficulty on myself by treating Venomoth and Venonat as separate Pokémon on top of already having Golbat. The hard part of the battle is Venomoth for its superior offense, especially coming out of getting Toxic’d by Venonat. Still, by pretending that Ash’s Pidgeotto still had a relevant usage from Sand Attack, the fight’s troubles are well-mitigated. As a side note, for additional challenge, Koga’s Golbat was given the moves of his Adventures counterpart. Also, in light of some hard-hitting hindsight, this Gym would’ve been a good place to implement Pidgeotto’s Double-Edge (the TM for which is in Celadon City, back with Erika). Blaine: Like with Koga, I took Ash’s two fights with Blaine and made them into one. For good measure I also imposed the handicap that Ash can’t call upon Charizard unless Squirtle and Pikachu are felled first. Since Squirtle is the team’s most objective weakling (not picking up Hydro Pump, a Level 42 move, when the team as a whole passes the Level 40 mark in between Sabrina and Erika), this is an easy occurrence. As for Blaine’s team, their levels (50, 48, and 54) are directly lifted from Pokémon Yellow version; in addition, Ninetales’s Tail Whip is replaced with Fire Spin, Rhydon is an exact copy of Giovanni’s sans level, and Magmar replaces the Yellow version Arcanine. Team Rocket: I went all out with making this fight harder on myself; Machamp is lifted from the one Blue had in the Adventures manga, Kingler is a prelude to the one Ash himself will raise during the League, and Rhydon is a proper direct copy of Giovanni’s from Yellow Version. To top it off, I gave Team Rocket freedom to switch out freely. As it happens, Bulbasaur is the team MVP for having Sleep Powder (nominally) and being Super Effective on both Kingler and Rhydon. Even so, the drastically outclassed Squirtle and underpowered Pidgeotto each have a crucial role to play as well. So yeah, Surge notwithstanding, Ash actually got past all eight Gyms just fine overall.

Versus Network I’ve also done the Gyms for the Adventures manga.
@boergerplays83536 жыл бұрын
mayborneflower really do tell
@mayborneflower6 жыл бұрын
Boerger plays This was a bit tricky to nail but I was able to recreate the Gym-relevant fights in Generation I terms. Brock: This fight had to be done twice, once with Blue and then with Red. In the name of simplicity, the fights were each treated as 1v1, though 3v3 was possible (though that would require accounting for Blue’s non-Charmeleon battlers and Red’s injured Saur and Poli). As the circumstances stand, Blue could beat Onix with Charmeleon and Red could do the same with Pika, though neither as easily as the manga would indicate. Charmeleon could take advantage of Onix’s poor Special stat with Ember and bank on both an off-chance Burn and Rock Throw or Bind missing the mark to help his survival. Pika meanwhile lacked such luxuries as a reliable attacking move, due to Ground’s immunity to STAB Electric and Rock being resistant to non-STAB Normal (i.e., Quick Attack); so I had to play the long game (emphasis on LONG) by relying on Growl and Flash to severely cripple Onix’s ability to fight back, then pray hard to RNGesus that I could get in about 45 Quick Attacks before Onix could tag me back an ideal absolute maximum of ten times with literally any attack. Koga: The next technical Gym Leader encounter was Misty and Red’s throwdown in Mt. Moon, where Koga sicced a Rhyhorn on them. Everyone on Red’s team by that point, sans Pika (ironically the one to win the fight in the manga) can dismantle the Rhyhorn with total ease; side note, Rhyhorn doesn’t get Rock Throw in Gen I so it has to make due with Horn Attack. The real kicker is the Rhyhorn suddenly evolving into Rhydon, which puts it anywhere between Level 30 (where it learns Stomp) and Level 42 (where it naturally evolves). Saur is pretty much boned due to the sheer level difference while Pika and Poli stand a chance due to being faster despite the massive discrepancy. Poli, going by the assumption that he retained his default Hypnosis, can incapacitate Rhydon and take advantage of its 4x Water weakness for massive damage while Pika’s offense-stunting antics from the Brock fight carry over into here. Misty: This fight is treated as a composite between Misty siccing her Gyara on Red, the actual Gym battle, and the offscreen training between the both of them. Opening with Gyarados, the fight starts tough for Red, though good luck with the devastating Hydro Pump or Hyper Beam leaves him wide open for retaliation from Pika. Staryu is thankfully not all that menacing to anyone on Red’s team. And Staryu is the real test for Red between its Speed and better use of STAB, though Saur and Poli are each really good at punishing it through both attrition and sabotage. Lt. Surge: The fight aboard the S.S. Anne is one where Red’s odds are not looking favorable as Surge boasts five unique Electric types to back him while Red is stuck with only Poli as Poliwrath, and Saur. Fortunately, Poli can dismantle most of Surge’s team with Hypnosis luck and Seismic Toss spam. Then in comes Saur, the best weapon for Electabuzz... based on a certain assumption. In the incident where Red caught his Snorlax (not long after this fight), he invoked the sap of Saur’s back bulb, which leads me to believe that Saur knows Growth for the time frame of this battle. Since Growth raises Special and all Electric moves (Surge had yet to properly tame Electabuzz, so that’s all he knew at the time) are classed as Special, Saur could just stack Growths to render Electabuzz’s offense ineffectual and retaliate with Leech Seed and Razor Leaf at his own leisure. Blue & Koga: The next Gym is the haunting of Pokémon Tower where Red faces a possessed Blue and then both of them go at it with Koga. The first phase of this ordeal is Red fighting Blue; the battle is a full 4v4 (Saur, Pika, Poli, & Snor vs Charmeleon, Scyther, Golduck, and Pidgeotto), where Blue leads with his Charmeleon ace (downplayed to Level 46, wherein a Charmander learns Fire Spin). The fight can go either way but Red can win and, after disposing of the Gastly possessing Blue as a fifth KO, the battle shifts to Blue facing Koga. With the same team used to face Red (sans Gastly), Blue is faced against Koga’s Arbok and, for some additional challenge, Golbat. Triumphing over both poisonous pests saves Pokémon Tower from Team Rocket. Erika: For the first in a while, the Gym battles return to an actual Gym with Erika. The fight is a straightforward 3v3 (Saur, Poli, and Pika vs Angela, Bellsprout, and Gloom). In all honesty, Red should not have been struggling with this fight like he did in the manga, between an Ivysaur with Sleep Powder (assuming he didn’t give it up for Cut fight before this fight), a Poliwrath with both Ice Beam and Seismic Toss, and a Pikachu armed with Thunder Wave/Flash/Substitute stall game. Al’s Moltres: As it turns out Red and Blaine teaming up to fight Moltres counts as the Cinnabar Gym fight due to Blaine handing his badge to Red offscreen after the battle. Not much else to say, Moltres is treated like a Gen I wild encounter (Level 50, only two moves) while Red and Blaine fight it off with Gyara and a newborn Aero. Koga: Now the Gyms come to a head with the Silph Co. mini-arc, the first being Blue’s final rematch with Koga. Koga is armed with Grimer & Muk (worn as armor), Ekans (wrist-mounted like a whip), Weezing (imported from Yellow chapter for extra challenge), and Golbat alongside his captive Articuno saved for last. Blue’s opening Scyther will cut Koga’s opening Grimer to ribbons with Slash and leaves a huge impact on Koga’s second fighter before going down itself while the rest of Blue’s team (Charizard and Machamp especially) will do a number to the rest of the team in bypassing their Physical defenses (Charizard being a Special fighter while Machamp boasts Karate Chop and Seismic Toss). As for Articuno (again, treated as Wild), Charizard will land the first hit with a hard Flamethrower (assuming you don’t want to play a risky Fire Spin gambit) before falling to a lack of Ice resistance. Then in comes Golduck to be the damage sponge needed to take Articuno out. Lt. Surge: Now comes Surge’s final rematch, except with Magnemite replaced by Raichu and Zapdos as a sixth fighter. Red has the harder fight over Blue as half his team is weak to Electric while the other half isn’t particularly well-equipped to face Electric types; not made much better as I decided to treat Electabuzz and Raichu as straight Stadium imports. Even so, Aero and Gyara were each effective brutes (Aero being speedy, Gyara being tanky) with Hyper Beam, Pika was an effective saboteur with Thunder Wave, and Snor could dish out the pain with Headbutt and Strength. Should Pika, Poli, and at least one other survive to face Zapdos, the former could incapacitate the lightning bird with a final Thunder Wave while the others beat it into submission. Sabrina: Not gonna, this fight was sheer wank in design as I gave Sabrina a full team of five plus Moltres while Green’s team was given the levels of Blue from the games right before Victory Road (45, 45, 47, 47, 50, 53 Starter) and her Clefairy was supplemented with Sing to match Jigglypuff. The wank would take forever to explain right now but long story short, is that if Green were faced with a (MUCH more) reasonable and accurate 5v3 against Kadabra, Mr. Mime, and Drowzee/Hypno, she’d be able to pull it out. Sabrina, final fight: This fight, wherein Sabrina fused the three birds together, was ALSO severe wank, in part to me overleveling the Legendary Birds to Level 70 and throwing in a Mew with the idea of “what if all three bird heads got back up for round two” in mind. Since I did manage to pull the fight off with the levels handicap, I can at least assure that the trinity of Pikachu & Venusaur (Red), Clefable & Blastoise (Green), and Charizard & either Pidgeot or Scyther (Blue) could totally take on the Legendary Birds together, assuming all things equal. Mewtwo & Blaine: For the lulz, I included the Mewtwo mini-arc for this. Treating Mewtwo as a Wild Encounter like I did the Legendary Birds (ironically harder than the manga, as his main attack is Psychic and Recover is a confirmed move), Red could assuredly take on Mewtwo if it were the games. It’s just a simple matter of landing Toxic with either Pikachu or Snorlax and waiting Mewtwo out. After that battle, I decided to have Red’s B-Team (Snor, Gyara, and Aero) go head-to-head with Blaine’s Pokémon Yellow team, as the two swore to have a friendly battle together after Mewtwo was caught. Blaine stood no chance, FYI. Giovanni: And now we come to the end of the line at the Viridian Gym, the battle split into two halves; the first with Giovanni having Cloyster, Golem, and Beedrill (I skipped Nidoqueen since she was in both fights), the second half having Nidoking, Dugtrio, Rhyhorn, Nidoqueen, and Rhydon. The battle, assuming it were squarely in games terms, goes by the rules of Juan’s anime Gym (Red fights the first half, then ditches the fainted Pokémon of said half going into the finale). Being able to pull this fight off is fully feasible, assuming you don’t do what I did and put most of Giovanni’s team in the upper Level 60’s while leaving most of Red’s in the upper Level 50’s. Also, I did the second half in Gen VII to both honor Team Rainbow Rocket in Ultra and let both sides have access to banned attacks (I do my stuff on Showdown, so I gotta dance around the Clauses to get stuff done).
