Palace fan here too. The rivalry stemmed from a few incidents, on both sides to be fair. The first was we had a manager doing very well for us in league 1 and left to them halfway through the season for wages. Then our new manager got coffee thrown on, so then we threw coffee on the old one then they started doing shit. We beat them and they tore up the nest (our old stadium) then we tore up theirs in response. Hope this helps in a basic way

I was at the game in 1989 at Palace when Kelvin Morton awarded 5 penalties. 4 to Palace. Palace missed 3 of them but still won 2.1. baking hot day. Easter Monday. Mike Trusson was also sent off for Brighton. The away end used to be behind the goal on an open terrace. Milk bottles were thrown at us from outside the ground before the game. Anyone there will remember that. Alan Curbishley scored Brightons penalty and was very unlucky not to equalize late on. Palace went up that season through the play offs beating Swindon then Blackburn.

There are plenty of derbys of similar distances, the likes of SKY are finding it hard to understand. If they actually travelled to games they would realise going to Palace takes half the time to Portsmouth let alone Southampton which is even longer and they regulary refer to our games vs them as 'south coast' rivalrys without batting an eyelid.
