This video shows every monarch of England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom!
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, in which the monarch shares power with a constitutionally organized government. The reigning king or queen is the country’s head of state. All political power rests with the prime minister (the head of government) and the cabinet, and the monarch must act on their advice.

I can't believe how many of the people who commented didn't realize that the dates listed were for the dates that the monarch *reigned* and not the years they *were born* and *died* . Isn't it blindingly obvious when each monarch's begin date is the same year as the previous one's end date?

@@wendyjacques9366 I commend you for going to all the trouble you did to compile this list, but there are a few errors. The current monarch is Charles III, not Charles II. Jane Grey is not considered to have been a monarch as she was never crowned and the majority of the English nobles considered her claim to the throne as invalid. If you put her on the list then you would have to add Matilda, the daughter of Henry I who named her his heir. Either both should appear on the list or neither. In cases where there was only one monarch of a given name, he or she is not the first of that name until another monarch comes along by that name, So Queen Anne is just Anne, not Anne I. King Stephen is Stephen, not Stephen I. William III was joint ruler of England with Queen Mary II - she was a queen regnant, not a queen consort. Oliver and Richard Cromwell were rulers but not monarchs. They didn't consider themselves monarchs and no one else did either. Finally, the opinions of most historians is that no monarch prior to Æthelstan could be considered the monarch of England since there was no such kingdom until Æthelstan united the separate kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia, Northumbria and East Anglia. The kings before him were called King of the Anglo-Saxons, not kings of England.

Missing:Jane Grey, The “Nine Day Queen” and Henry the Young King (28 February 1155 - 11 June 1183) was the eldest son of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine to survive childhood. Beginning in 1170, he was titular King of England, Duke of Normandy, Count of Anjou and Maine. Henry the Young King was the only English king since the Norman Conquest to be crowned during his father's reign, but was frustrated by his father's refusal to grant him meaningful autonomous power.[1][2] He died, aged 28, six years before his father, leaving his brother Richard to become the next king.

Not unsurprisingly, others have commented that the photo of George VI is not correct. LOL I’m an American living in Texas who barely remembers much of English history, and spotted the mistake right away. Probably because all the photos I’ve seen of Elizabeth’s father show him clean-shaven. Plus you can see the man in the photo is similar to the man in the painting just before.

9th Century actually, 800s = 9th century just as we are in the 21st century now. As for earlier history England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland didn't exist as nations, there were kings, queens and leaders of various tribes that controlled certain areas but even post Roman occupation for first few centuries what is now England for example was not a country unified under one monarch.

Hi, just wanted to say that Queen/Empress Matilda is missing (daughter of King Henry I and mother of King Henry II) I understand that she could be missing due to the fact that she kept "fighting" over the throne with King Stephen, but King Henry I did name her his heir to the throne. Also Queen/Lady Jane Grey is missing, I can also understand this as she was only queen for nine days, but King Edward VI did name her successor.
@ds1868
@ds1868 Жыл бұрын
Both persons are not officially recognised as Sovereigns. Matilda gave up her right on the agreement that Henry Plantagenet would become King after King Stephen. Lady Jane Grey was never officially declared Queen Regnant through the Accession Council, even though she was legally the heir.

Your timeline shows the wrong photo of George VI. The photo for George VI, ("Bertie", the former Prince Albert, Duke of York; father of Elizabeth II, grandfather of Charles III, and younger brother of Edward VIII), is missing from your timeline. The photo that is represented in error for George VI is obviously a photo of George V, husband of Mary of Teck, father of Edward VIII and George VI, grandfather of Elizabeth II, and great-grandfather of Charles III.

There was no Great Britain before 1707, therefore there were no Kings or Queens of such a place. The Act of Union (in 1707 under Queen Anne) between Scotland and England, which combined the Scottish flag of St. Andrew with the English flag of St. George (forming the Union flag seen today) resulted in the creation of Great Britain.

Thanks for this, it’s a good list 👍🏻 but a couple of wee things: James I should be James VI and I, King of Scotland and England. He was the sixth King James of Scotland long before he became the first King James of England as well. As others have pointed out, you missed Lady Jane Grey, Queen of England & Ireland between Edward VI and Mary I (albeit for nine whole days, the poor cow). As for Oliver Cromwell, his self-styled title ‘Lord Protector’ would be more appropriate than simply ‘English Statesman’ given he was the de facto king. Ditto his inconsequential son.

Fascinating. Thanks for this. I have just been reading up about the line of rulers. Others have mentioned some minor issues. Let me throw in a couple more because it is fresh in my mind. There is evidence that Alfweard, son of Edward the Elder, was king for three weeks or so between his father's death and his older brother Athelstan taking the throne. Athelstan is actually crowned after his younger brother dies. Also Sven Fork beard apparently ruled for 41 days, driving Athelred the Unready into exile. With Sven's death Athelred returned. The direct Anglo-Saxon line is considered at an end with Harold II though the Witenagamot elected someone named Edgar Atheling, a grandson of Edmund Ironside. Edgar Atheling never ruled, submitting to William the Conquer two months after election in mid-October. To many historians the line of English rulers is believed to have begun with Alfred who was the first to consolidate a good chunk of England. I appreciate that you went back to his grandfather Ecgberht. Thanks for this video.
