Thomas Cromwell wasn’t executed because of Anne of Cleves, it’s actually quite the opposite. Shortly after the anullment Cromwell was awarded the title ‘Earl of Essex’ one of the most prestigious titles one could obtain in England for his contribution to the development of the Anglican Church. The real reason why he was executed is because Thomas Howard (The head of the catholic faction and Duke of Norfolk) had convinced Henry to get rid of him due to his associations with extremist Protestant figures (such as Barnes and Zwingli)

Fun fact: Henry and Anne of Cleves gave up the relationship and became friends, Anne became an honorary member of the king's family and was known as the King's beloved sister. So this means she wasn't rejected but the fact that both didn't see the spark in their relationship, but I loved the fact that they became friends after their relationship. Actually, the current British royal family might be descended from him. Mary Boleyn (Anne Boleyn’s sister) was one of Henry’s mistresses. The Queen Mother (Queen Elizabeth the second mom) was a direct descdant of Mary Boleyn and Catherine Carey, meaning that Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, etc, are also all direct descendants of Mary Boleyn. Henry VII was thought to have fathered Catherine Carey and her brother William. If he did then the current royal family are his descendants. Not only for the reason that I mentioned but Princess Diana was also a direct descendant of Mary Boleyn, so William, Harry and their children are direct descendants of Mary Boleyn, and possibly Henry VIII through her too. 🙂

In part he didn't feel she was beautiful because back in those days the definition of beauty in English courts was whiteness of skin. There's actually a lot more to Anne of Cleves. After Jane died, he needed another wive, but the reason why he didn't just search in England but went all the way to Germany for that, was because of the vulnerability of England. They separated from the church and with that, all Christian countries, so he didn't have the protection from Rome or Spain anymore. He needed an alliance with a protestant country to ensure his safety again and there was Anne of Cleve's. Germany was a protestant country at the time. When she got shipped over and first entered court, Henry was very excited about seeing this new woman. He grew up reading these love novels where the love interest is a poor boy sneaking into a rich woman's room at night and makes love to her. That was exactly how he wanted to seduce her, but she, of course, didn't know those stories as she had completely different books growing up. She just saw him as someone who didn't belong in the castle and was trying to harass her. Henry took that as rejection and felt insulted and humiliated by her rejection. Thats the reason why he broke it off. Because she failed to recognise him in disguise

Fun Fact: Holbein was known for painting accurate portraits, so Anna's portrait would've been closer to what she actually looked like. He told me that there was no credible account of such but, most likely the video refers to the charges of adultery brought upon A. Boleyn. She was accused of multiple cases of adultery, the most notable being her own brother who was confirmed to constantly visit her chambers. The accusations stemmed from her own friend and maiden revealing the secrets of who visited her. Thus one could say that she assaulted his manhood by cheating. However, Henry was in an adulterous affair with other woman--one being Anne Boleyn's maiden. (Henry loves to boink his wife's friends)

She was actually smart and pretty, but happened to not be attracted to old men. It's interesting that Henry pushed for the marriage in order to form an alliance with the Duke of Cleves. Than when he wanted to annul the marriage he had to ask Anne to consent to the annulment because he couldn't just kill the sister of a powerful ally. Anne was smart because she consented quickly and was given money and properties and received the title of being known as the king's beloved sister. She attended court and was well respected. She would live to see Henry's son Edward take the throne and die. Attend Mary's wedding and later her coronation. She was the last of his wives to die so she had the last laugh.

For anyone who wants to know, Thomas Cromwell aka St. Thomas More was one of King Henry's best friends for years and became the Lord Chancellor of England after Wolsey was fired. He refused to sign the oath stating that Henry was the head of the Church. He was martyred for his faith after spending forever in jail. Really cool guy.
