that's because you're assuming that all harmonic context must be expressed through volume, and thus missing the fact that the original "background melody" was ALWAYS the main melody. evidence: it's the one played by the wave table synth in the original FDS version. sticks out like a sore thumb there.

I love the thematic comparison between Fusion and Dread's item acquisition themes! Fusion's theme sounds very electric and has that "bwoooaaaa" effect near the end which seems to be a staple motif of the X parasites in the game. Dread still has some electronic synth in it to match and keeps that "bwoooaaa" that it had, yet it sounds more faithful to the traditional instruments. In a way you could say it reflects how Samus's suit in Dread is recovering visually from its organic Fusion suit look and is gaining back her more traditional look.

I think a big part of the differences in the theme is related to the setting and scope of the games as well; Fusion was an entirely manufactured and tightly packed environment, whereas Dread is a whole planet, a return to form after Fusion's deviance from 1/ZM, 2/SR, Super, and Prime. We see a bit of Fusion's electronic basis for the melody come back in Hunters where half the "planets" are tight, artificially-constructed space stations.
