Halfway through this video, I paused it and wrote a note on my phone "Take a piece of paper and poke a bunch of holes in it. The holes represent individual finite minds and the piece of paper represents consciousness. The holes are separate but all part of the same piece of paper." When Rupert used a similar analogy at 21:05, I nearly jumped out of my chair. I'm still freaked out.

A stray cat came by, and for a few days I had a wonderful friendship with the delightful little guy - he was so confident, friendly and playful. He would appear out of nowhere, and be gone till the next day. After a few days, when I thought about him when he was not around, my mind expanded, and I could sense his state of being - his simple, clear, mind; somehow our states of mind merged.

“It is the mind that tells you that the mind is there. Don’t be deceived. All the endless arguments about the mind are produced by the mind itself, for its own protection, continuation and expansion. Just wana say that the (resting of the attention) is really the highest form of meditation there is like rupert said. I am practising it for couple of months and I see big results on a fast pase. Yes some times the attention jumps back to objects BUT DON'T GIVE UP ITS A PART OF THE PROCESS.

I love that we can be open to others’ ideas when we share (energy?) fields. This sounds kooky but when my beloved brother died I heard his voice and he gave me information that was true but I didn’t know (consciously) at the time. It was corroborated by other family members. I know when we die our body-minds die but consciousness does not. Confusing but also intriguing. Also, identical twin studies of siblings separated at birth seem to indicate these kinds of thought connections sometimes. Even over long distances. For example, they may both name their pets the same name or marry people with same qualities or names. There are many examples.

I would argue that, while our personal sense of time and how "long" things take to occur is indeed likely affected by our mental "limitations", I do believe we have a good understanding of time as it can be understood as a unit of measure and far outside of our own minds ability to intuit.

"Space is aware" is another way of putting it. That space, in addition to being aware of rocks, planets, atoms, thoughts, feelings, etc, is aware of senses of continuity and contiguity created in the human organism, which lends itself to the illusion of individualized "separate consciousnesses". The reason "you" are not aware of what's going on for the tree across the way is due to the pretty clear fact that you (the thoughts and sensations bundled in proximity and operating as a complex whole) are "stuck" being wherever you are. Awareness is aware of you here, awareness is aware of you there. I think a simpler way of putting it though, would be "existence is known".

Since consciousness has a reflexive quality to it, it can arise in an infinite amount of unique expressions, within which it knows itself in that particular name and form. You can see this happening even within your own “individual” mind. It is both one and infinitely many at the same time.

Is there such a thing as consciousness otherwise from mind. I don't mean in the materialistic paradigm, I mean in the non duality model. In the tradition mind is classified by functions. Is it not possible that awareness or consciousness is the primary stage of mind and the only thing that exists and the world is a projection of it. The difference would be in wording really but it seems to me that mind is just consciousness with objects. There is no such thing as no mind, just cleared mind. So reality is just stages of mind. Clear mind, object mind and matter mind.
@oneofthepeoplehere
@oneofthepeoplehere 6 жыл бұрын
There is only one consciousness. "Mind" is not a "form of consciousness". Your sense that it is is only the end result of the complex way your brain has developed survival mechanisms for an organic lifeform. Essentially, what you have are a cluster of chemical/physical reactions between an environment and a unit, which you call a person, an organism, or maybe you could consider it as a microbiome. It might be easier to think about it this way: If a nerve cell were to appear in the middle of space, and manage to be "activated", there would be "feeling" there, in that little blip of space, because awareness is synonymous with existence, and because we know from personal experience that "feel" is what happens in those types of cells. What a "mind" is, on the other hand, is what you get when you have many different types of cells forming a complex system in which the activation of one type triggers the activation of another type in such a manner as to "benefit" the existence and sustenance of precisely such a compound configuration. Why such a thing should exist in its complex form is explained by the utmost common sense: any physical item with attributes leading to "lastingness" will tend to last. If two such things combine in such a way that their "lastingness" is improved upon, they will last. Where we find ourselves today is in a state where our lastingness has been in part due to an ability to run a chemical simulation of an external environment with the ability to differentiate the organism itself from the chemical simulation. All of the elements of the organism: the physical construction, the chemical simulation, are *known* simply due to the fact that to exist is to be known. Your thoughts (the chemical simulation) are known in the exact same way that a tree or a rock or space is known - and they are known by the exact same "thing": Knowingness, or existence, itself. The reason that a human mind *seems* to be a "type of consciousness" is because the "lastingness" or survival network of the unit, operates as a closed system. The simplest word to explain it would be: proximity. It's a cluster of known things that seem to be operating as a unit, because as an accident of the properties of "lastingness", they are. The next question might be: well, if there is only one consciousness, and I am that consciousness, then why do I seem to only be conscious of Craig Smithness and not everything, including the rocks on the ground and all of space and everyone else. The answer to that is pretty straightforward: Wherever Craig Smith is, awareness is going to be aware of a Craig Smith being there, right? But the TRICK is, if you want to call it a trick, is in where you find your identity. You can identify with all of the meatstuff - all of the accidents of physical and chemical combinations that have lead to the type of lastingness we call "people" (or in the case of what's going on in YOUR location a "Craig Smith")- OR - you can identify with the *knower* of all the sensations you are privy to, and concede that that knower has nothing to do with Craig Smithness (you could hypothetically morph into a dog that tastes the color blurple and has the sense of magnetic awareness of pizza - it's the "knowingness" that remains the same). So that's how consciousness has nothing to do with the mind.

@Rupert Spira .. who said the human mind was finite, please tell me sir ! .. this is the entire problem with this antiquated mode of communication .. the presumably individuated individual being somehow a repository of some form of magical information, when in fact, in its higher manifestations it is merely a conduit to the 'hypertext' proper.

I don't doubt your experience but I think the way you're trying to name it is unnecessary. Probably just a way your fear of ego death is manifesting. If you have stress in your life and have a nightmare, you can go 2 routes: Realizing the monster in your dream is a way of creating an image out of your normal, everyday stress; OR you do what you're doing here and say that monsters are real. Occam's razor.

Nada. Evil is REAL. Their is a bit of dark in everyone, whether in the ego self, the pain body, or in creation at large. Evil has to be accepted, but it is so hard not to want to counter it. Skirting around the question was disingenuous.
@oneofthepeoplehere
@oneofthepeoplehere 6 жыл бұрын
I've never seen an example of evil in my entire life. My answer was meant to be useful, there was no room for me to indulge in fantasy with you. What you call "skirting around it" was me finding it impossible to have a conversation on a subject matter the likes of "Is the bogey man real or not" because such a conversation is worse than pointless - it is a distraction from the goal of getting at the truth. The only "reality" to "evil" is that it really is a word that people will use to relate to feelings they have. The feelings people have about the world around them have nothing to do about the the nature of reality, unfortunately, because if they did everyone would be enlightened. Direct answer: Evil is not real. Real answer: Forget about figuring out whether it's real or not. Your speculation is worthless. Get over yourself. You're not special with your darkside bullshit. Examine awareness itself, not objects in awareness, and for fuck sake not your shitty second-hand interpretations of the objects of your awareness. Sink the mind into the heart. Relax your focus. The self or ego has defense mechanisms and that's what you're running into. I promise. Knock off your crap. The end.

Since people involved in Spirituality understand that Awareness is the fundamental aspect of everything, rather than "matter", then from that has come the unexamined assumption that "mind" and the mental is "higher" than the physical body and the physical world, and that the mind creates the body and the world. Unfortunately, that is not true, and Rupert is one of those who has not carefully examined his concepts in this area. Advaita Vedanta teachings say that mind, body and the world all come into relative existence at the same time, together. Further examination shows that mind - thoughts and feelings - are entirely dependent on the body. One major clue is that we think in the first language that is learned by our physical body. So, what is this "finite mind" that Rupert refers to? It is Awareness being limited to a particular time and space. The one and ONLY thing that distinguishes between individual beings is that they are never at exactly the same time and place. It is theoretically possible to create two perfectly identical clones - but they would always be two different individuals because they are never in exactly the same time and place. Time and space are aspects of the physical world. Being in a particular time and place means being a physical body occupying that location at that time. All thoughts, feelings and memories are either of physical objects, are about physical objects, or are generated by the physical body. We get the impression of the possibility of a free floating "mind" without a body, from the fact that we have memories and imagination. Those seem to be able to function without any current sense perceptions or bodily sensations. However, all memories and imagination have content that comes from previous sense perceptions and bodily sensations. And, we know that memory is a function of the physical body because brain damage can affect memories. In the video, Rupert himself admits that he never gets thoughts about subjects that he has never studied, like astrophysics or Chinese grammar. Also, people who really wanted to find evidence of ESP have spent decades researching it, and have never found any solid evidence despite hoping to find it (for example, Dr. Susan Blackmore). Thus, in conclusion, while Awareness is fundamental and exists without the physical world, in contrast, "mind" - regardless of definition - always exists in refernce to a physical body (and thus a physical world)

I found exact quotes: Rupert Spira - "The body is an image in the finite mind and the finite mind is a localization of infinite consciousness." and "Remember the body is an appearance in the mind.' and later " No, physical bodies never come into existence. We never go further down from Consciousness and mind. We never go down to matter. Everything we know about matter - that is the body and the world - is an appearance in the mind - in the finite mind. " And with regards to your formatulation - what does "vibrating" and "differentiated" mean with regards to "Consciousness"?? Consciousness is formless, eternal and unlimited (all things Spira has pointed out). And going back to my original post, but now with the specific quote "the finite mind is a localization of infinite consciousness." Localization means in one place and not another. The whole concept of "place" refers to "space-time", which is another way of saying "physical universe inhabited by physical bodies". He hasn't really thought through his metaphysical conceptual ideas, and when someone like the questioner, who has invested a week and a significant amount of money in getting Rupert's teaching, then they are inclined to think his viewpoint must be 100% correct. This is just about his metaphysical concepts, I think his teaching methods are really excellent and worthwhile.

Silly, a thought is a memory. We can actually see where they are stored in our brains. No memories no thoughts. You cannot think about something you don't already know as an experience which then becomes part of your thinking process. And your brain only stores an interpretation of that experience not the actual experience itself. The mind is a collection of all human experience. Each of us has "A" view of reality but no one has "The" view of reality. these clowns are all making this stuff up.
