She should have gotten an Emmy for this. Wow. Just. WOW!!!

I was about to say the same thing! I don't know why there couldn't have been a tie that year because Lucci was amazing it this.

I think when the Bianca's anorexia storyline was when she deserved the Emmy and she won for it.

Shannon Benjamin So many. Not just during the nominations. There were several times when she wasn’t nominated and should have been.

Unequivocally, Susan Lucci's best performance and a career highlight. She blew the roof off the place.

Erica was high on drugs but she had some legit valid points. Brilliant for them to dig into all of her pain....it was deeper than the fall from the scaffolding. But her rejection, her losses. This was such great writing.

Andrew Wikins Exactly. She may have started taking the pills to help with her physical pain from the fall, but the addiction resulted from all of the emotional and mental pain that she had been put through in her life.

Proof that the daytime Emmy board was crooked . The fact she didn’t win for this performance was a crime . They owe her a apology for not giving. Her the lead actress award that year

This scene represents Erica Kane so well. The ultimate narcissist and solipsist.

THIS is the scene that should have gotten Lucci her Emmy... not the Bianca intervention (even though she was good in it; she absolutely KILLED IT in this scene)

I agree. It's a shame that OLTL had Viki's DID storyline going on at the same time, because THIS is the storyline that should have won her the Emmy.

Poor Janet. She's always her own worst enemy. I loved her together with Pierce, until she got so jealous of Brooke that she went nuts again.

This was a phenomenal episode....As others here said, Lucci had her career highlight with this tape. She delivered on every emotion: anger, pity, angst, sorrow, pain, even injected humorous quips (i.e. saying Brooke was third rate, St. Maria of Wildwind in her push up bra). I also concur Lucci should've received her first Emmy this year. Sadly, she had tough competition at the 1996 Emmys with powerhouse Erika Slezak submitting excellent material herself. Ideally both these Queens of Daytime would've tied that night. Like many people here, my mouth dropped open when she lost. Thankfully it only took a few more years to honor a magnificent, classy actress. I also want to point something else out which hasn't been brought up...at 16:53 I love the history reference with Mona. As we longtime viewers know, for as headstrong/determined as Erica was, she suffered from particular vulnerabilities. That's where Mona's strength guided her and clearly Erica knew that based off what she said. Had Mona been alive, she'd have not torpedoed as much as she did during her addiction. However, Erica also is a survivor, went to her mom's grave and knew what Mona would tell her: get help and beat this disease which robbed you of so much. As we saw, at that point Erica knew what she had to do: admit she gave control of her life to those toxic pills and get help....that she did and AMC told this story with professionalism, soli research on drug addiction and adhered to the show's history as well as showed Erica exhibit tremendous growth. In my 20 years watching (1991-2011), in my view Erica grew the most during the addiction plot. GREAT use of history for two of the show's most pivotal characters (how I wish Lorraine Broderick could've been AMC's head writer for many years. Like Agnes Nixon and Wisner Washam, she got its identity, knew the history and characters and rarely fumbled in her lengthy career as head writer. At least ABC had the decency to rehire her for the show's final months on ABC....Broderick made every episode from late June to that epic finale in September must see TV, which she also did during this head writing stint of 1995-1997)

WAsn't the doctor the problem. He controlled her wih the pills. Why didn't Jack or Dimitri stop the cameras earlier. The doctor on purposely tried to control Erica. But he never got caught did he. On an odd note I wish AMC could have afforded Erica new earrings - she wore those all the time UNLESS they were suppose to be real then I guess that would be understandable. Erica/Susan Lucci wore them al lthe time for photoshoots to the soap. Maybe Susan didn't win the emmy because she managed to look so good during this crisis. Mind you Dixie's hair was a huge distraction.

that has been bothering me while I watch these episodes. Dixie had such gorgeous hair in the beginning. Why did they keep lopping it off and messing with it?

In late 1999 and early 2000s she rocked the curls really well. I love the curls she had.
