All health insurance companies provide the same package for the basic (and compulsary) insurance. This package is defined by law so they all cover the same costs. They differ in price because of the deals that the companies can make with health and care providers. They can negotiate lower tariffs, thus offer a lower premium. But as a client you can only go to those providers. You can not choose your own hospital, specialist, therapeut, whatever. Rule of thumb: The cheaper the premium, the less choice you have. If you want to choose your own hospital etc., you need a more expensive insurance (actually the normal insurance). Mind you: the package is the same. Overall: when you're young and (live) healthy, the basic insurance will do. But if you really want to be sure or when you already have some issues or when you have a higher risk (genetically, life style, age), then you may want to consider an additional insurance. You can get an additional insurance to the basic (often for some €15 to €25 extra), that provides extra cover. This is a puzzle. These extra packages can differ from company to company, but mostly in details. But you can spend a whole day comparing these packages. My advice: consider for yourself what kind of medical care you might be going to need (what risks do you have/take). Then check which package(s) cover those risks. Then there is the dental insurance. It's in the basic insurance. Some companies have extra coverage integrated in their additional package, some have a separate package. Same her: check what you think you will need.

Heey! Thank you for such a cool video! Milena, could you please recommend a huisart in Rotterdam? I've read on Facebook so many scary stories about the ignorance of family doctors and giving prescriptions of paracetamol even in cases of urgency and not giving a referral to profile doctors

Hiii glad you enjoyed the video! My huisarts is actually not in Rotterdam so I can't give you a good recommendation unfortunately... but if I hear of any good ones in Rotterdam I'll let you know!

In theory, you can choose your huisarts, but in reality only a huisarts within a small distance from your home will accept you as a new patient. If you have a condition which prevents you from going to see the huisarts, the huisarts will come to you. Since you're not the only patient, the huisarts will be reluctant to accept patients who live too far away. Dutch healthcare is based on the philosophy that in many cases, the body will heal itself if you give it some time and manage the symptoms like pain and fever. That is where the paracetamol story comes from. The huisarts will assess your condition and only refer you to a specialist in a hospital if that is medically necessary. If you're unable to work, taking sick leave is not only normal, but often your employer will send you home. Your employer will continue to pay your salary when you're sick. The Dutch healthcare system is mostly financed through taxes and through the health insurance, which is mandatory for every resident. Both are collective services. You will get the healthcare you need from a medical perspective and that is not always the healthcare which you think you need or which you feel entitled to. The Netherlands is amongst the countries with the highest life expectancies in the world, so the health care approach clearly isn't based on "ignorance".
