All-Natural Foraging Feeder for Parrots

Hey y'all!
This video shows how to build a foraging feeder with just natural items. Foraging is one of the most natural behaviors for birds to exhibit, and birds that have gotten used to captivity may start to lose interest in looking for their food (since they've gotten used to it just being in their bowl). Providing enrichment like this helps to provide great mental stimulation. Plus, since the parts are all natural you don't have to question whether or not an item is potentially treated with something that would be unsafe.
As always, safety should be your main consideration whenever giving anything new to an animal. You want to make sure that the parts are sized appropriately, and made of materials that are safe for that animal. Remember to supervise an initial interaction with a new item, and remember that animals can still get into difficult situations with items they have had multiple times in the past.

I love when different greens become available throughout the year, I’ve seen birds fall in love with fresh food and produce using this approach after being told “they only eat seed and pellets”.

These are great ideas!! I'm going to try with a new bird that won't try any veggies perhaps he'll show some interest in these. I've done something similar for my conure in the past and she loves them! Thanks for sharing❤️

Gest idea with putting the veggies in there, I've only ever done a tiny sprinkle of seeds, I also use the base of winter greens that we get on the uk to use for a foraging tool a similar way. Thanks for sharing

I’ve also done this with birds that were used to eating just a pellet-based diet to encourage them to start eating produce. Some of the varieties of greens can be a bit soft for this, but there are definitely quite a few things that will work with this. :)

how long do you leave these up? the 1 in a bowl you can add water too and the lettuce will grow you must change the water every day though.. thanks for the info video

The climate here (gulf coast) doesn’t really let them be anything other than disposable feeders for me, but I would say to just use your best judgment. So much would depend on temperature, humidity and the quality of the produce when you start.
