I have a Fosi P1 pre amp. I used it in my tape monitor loop as a tube buffer. With a remote control I could switch the unit in and out instantly. I honestly could not hear a difference. I turned up the bass and had an instant tone control and since my receiver didn't have a loudness control, it came in kind of handy.

The Op Amps are what creates the sound signature. The tubes in the P1 are already just used as a low voltage (depleted plate) "bufffer" and honestly, other than gimmick, they really do nothing for the sound. The op amps are really what gives you the sound signature.

Really hoping a variant of the P3 gets made that still has tubes, but adds fully-balanced XLR in-out, ability for mono via the XLR in/outs, and the ability to daisy-chain one to another to another to another that outputs to the upcoming ZA3's XLR input for one channel so that it uses the mono outs for speakers. Therefore, the other channel of audio can repeat this process and setup. That'd be one crazy stereo system if both channels had that setup.

Randy, a little bit of a disappointing review. I suppose you posted this as soon as possible to coincide with the product launch. I think many V3 users would be looking at the P3 as a supplement to the V3 to add flavour to the sound of the V3. I wish you had spent a little more time discussing the sound benefits, if any, and not just doing an unboxing. Yes, it is affordable, yes it compliments the awesome V3 in build, but does it do enough to enhance the sound of the V3? does it give it that oomph that you are seeking??

So I can't speak for how the p3 pairs with the v3 but it certainly adds a live kinda sound to my older Yamaha 5.1 system. Not sure how to describe it but it's very enjoyable! I have a 15band eq that has been my preamp for a few yrs, i figured I'd want the eq no matter what but I'm an rca cable short of connecting it into the chain 😅 to my surprise I am enjoying the sound of the p3 straight into my Yamaha. I'm very happy/impressed with the p3. Excited for the ZA3 coming.

Another P3 benefit specifically for some V3 owners: Added Gain (volume). The V3 has less gain than most Class D competitors...so if you have a lower output DAC or other source you may not be able to get the full output power of the V3. Several reviews of the V3 on KZbin (and most of the dissatisfied owners on Amazon) say the V3 does not have enough power. Like you say, it has plenty, but the P3 will allow you to boost the signal of your source so the V3 will reach its full output. The Aux (sub) out is also a specific benefit for V3 owners because the Aux out on the V3 is not volume controlled.

I've got the BT20A Pro. Basically, it is like a cheaper version of the P3 and V3 all in one box, but the internal parts quality of course isn't as good, and it is completely solid-state. If you got the P3 and V3 you'd have no need for the BT-20A Pro. I like the BT-20A Pro for what I'm doing with it: Powering some old small Polk bookshelf speakers for use as computer speakers. Works fine for a desktop solution. If you are going to spring for the P3 and V3, I'd recommend saving up a bit more and getting the 48V power supply for the V3 so you can get more out of it. Good luck.

I’m using something similar in a surround sound setup however I asked a while back about using car audio twisted rca cables for interconnects. Supposedly they reduce emi/rfi. Can they be recommended over shielded cables for a cheaper solution that’s more flexible as well??? Currently I have stinger 4000’s but they are not very transparent. Like using crappy cable vs copper. Other than that there is no noise other than the faint hiss from the tube preamps which I’m sure an attenuator can fix.

One potential problem with the P3, and it's a BIG one, are the 'tone controls'. One reviewer has commented that these are treble and bass boosts - with no cut - despite the centre detents and the "+ and - " markings on the fascia. That reviewer found that the bass boosted by 12db and the treble by 6db - and flat response was both knobs turned all the way to the left. The inability to tame excess treble or bass would rule it out for a lot of people.
@fosiaudio
@fosiaudio Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback, but I don't quite understand what do you mean by "The inability to tame excess treble or bass", do you mean the treble should be 12dB too? Or do you mean we need to add a tone bypass?

@@fosiaudio Not quite - that reviewer commented that you could not turn the treble or bass down as full left rudder (as it were) is tonally neutral - so 0db on both pots.The mid-indent position is actually +3bd treble and +6db bass; and full right is +6db treble and +12db bass. I prefer those longer throw volume pots, for reasons here stated. The standard & practically always used "logarithmic resistance" vollume pots rise far too steeply in volume imo, for all vintage & modern power amp sections alike. From a typical 7 o'clock starting point, you'll get quite loud by the 9 or 10 o'clock position & possibly blow your tweeters or go into possible cone-destroying distortive clipping by the 1 or 2 o'clock position if not before in < 90'deg turn or within a 120'ish degree turn from zero volume when there's really a fully usable 300 or + degrees turn available to go from min to max vol' with a 'linear volume pot' so to me, they make perfect sense. I reckon manufacturers only stick to "Log' volume pots'" & not dare put a more sensible linear vol pot in as folk may wrongly perceive it's longer turn volume change as a lack of ultimate power, but full vollume just appears nearer to full-turn end-stop with a linear vol pot, which i'd bet this amp has. Boo to log' vol' pots, hoorah to linear vol pots. I quickly swapped my valve pre 100'k pot with hhe same but just ordered the linear version, there's always a linear well made Linear restance pot version for all sorts of non-hi fi uses, maybe for hi-fi too now, at least this amp maker woke up to sensible vol' change design

I have the BT-20A Pro driving some old Polk as computer speakers. Love it. I bought the V3. Might get the P3 and move the BT-20A Pro to my outbuilding. Bluetooth is handy out there where the wi-fi won't reach. Agree that two analog inputs would be nice, if there's room for them on the back. For standalone use, it might be better to pair the V3 with a WiiM Mini or Pro Plus and use the EQ on the WiiM as necessary.

Thanks...good stuff as usual. I've always used preamps on amps with no volume controls. In cases like this, do you typically max out the amp's volume and control levels with the pre or is there some special formula? And what if you have volume/tone controls at multiple stages? For example, like many I've got a PC (with its native volume/level controls at the device level) streaming something like Amazon with its volume controls, outputting via the optical port into a tiny DAC which has its level and tone controls, into a preamp like this with level and tone controls and finally into an amp like the V3 with its controls. I've always assumed that it is best go as flat as you can and max out all the levels at each stage and do all your tuning at the preamp. Thanks for any insights.

Sometimes it is kinda nice to hear a review of this cheap stuff. I have a pair of sweet old Timeframe 500's that I have been neglecting. Why? I don't feel like hauling out one of my old giant integrated amps. Maybe this is the route I will go. A cheap little stack for those times when I feel like firing up the Time-frames just to let them sing for a while .

There is something almost mysterious about those old DCM speakers. How do they get that delicate sound out of such simple speaker arrays. Not only that, the fact after all these years, mine haven't rotted. When people visit me, they always remark how beautiful the Timeframe 500's are and ignore my Magnepans lol.

This is a pretty big miss on Fosi's part for all the reasons you mentioned; needs at least two inputs bare minimum, a full sized pre-out, and a remote to really be useful as pre-amp. If the headphone amp was really strong you could at lest make the argument as a minimalist desktop stack but its not even good for that. Also drop the BT, and frankly the tube buffer as well.

@@fosiaudio Its not that including BT is bad its that its the least important feature on a product like this and its severally lacking features people would use. If the V3 and P3 are aiming for the highest possible sound quality the features priority is backwards on the P3.

Xduoo MP-01 tube phono pre amp has an aux in and the phono input for MM/MC setups, a well as a headphone amp. Albeit a steeper price, you still get tone controls, and on the headphone front, a stated 320mw at 32ohm..! The power supply is a 12v 2a. No bluetooth, but as you said, I'd rather use my dacs inputs and have the phono in. Measuring physically nearly an inch longer and roughly a half inch wider and taller than the Fosi V3 it could make a striking visual statement with the inverted pyramid look lol 😅

I got the P3 with the kickstarter campaign. Unfortunately my first one died almost immediately, but Fosi were fantastic and had a second one out to me within days. I think the fault was a single smd capacitor with a dodgy solder joint. So I can reassure anyone worried about product support. It is excellent. The P3 smooths out the slightly hard edge of the V3 and allows the flexibility of tone controls. It's a great wee unit and fun for tube rolling.

Home entertainment (livingroom) , first just listen to music CD,vinyl or streaming audio ..but music lovers may also play a instrument like (e)piano organ guitar ect. and jep maybe karaoke , but also these days youtubers do live performing ,mic,camera,music, instruments i play e-piano (stagecombo,piano organ synth) and found the fosi BT20pro as a perfect amp for home use Setup in the living room and there for compact and stylies I hate the pro studio and ugly PA speakers and amps no need for a livingroom so the NORSHING desktop mixer i need to mix al together.. but hate al the connectors stand on top of it and create a big spider on the desk and the pre amp is not the best dont need al the potmeter and sliders so I suggest connectors on the back(1-cd,2-vinyl ,3- 2x2 jack in and out // 4- digital usb-c, opt. arc? BT) and MAIN OUT...On the front row 1. 4xline-in vol.controle 1-2-3 =analoge ,4 =digital/BT , underneed each vol knob a swich toggels main out or jack rec out Row 2 master volume, tone controle , mic, and HEADphone(incl.switch main or rec) the master(mix) will be internal route thru the tube amp to the main output. On top we will have the nice tube's same size as the V3m bt20 ect. but 2 units high

The op amps actually do all the amplification. The tubes are just a buffer and you could bypass the tubes and get the same output. Fosi do have a phono level preamp/headphone amp called the X4 that has tome controls and a single line level input also. Same buffer gimmick configuration for the tubes though, relying on op amps for the sound signature and amplification. I really do wish these companies, like Fosi, would give up on the pretend tube systems. Using tubes as a plate depleted (low voltage) buffer makes the tubes pretty well redundant. The amplification and all the sound processing is still done by solid state and they sound no different if you bypass the tubes. Not saying Fosi is bad, because for the price they are good, but the tubes are just a gimmick and they really need to stop doing it.
@fosiaudio

Thank you for your suggestion, actually we have managed to increase the working voltage of the tubes to 54V so that the tubes did amplify the signals.

@@fosiaudio I have just ordered a P3 -- and your customer service, if I might say, is the best. However, would it be fair to say that the P3 is a hybrid preamp, since you still have a number of Texas Instruments NE5532DR opamps (I counted 4, theoretically able to output 80W @ 4ohms) working in tandem with the tubes in the amplification?

Two things: 1) I and all the other reviewers find the V3 rocks the bass. Do you get a ropey unit? 2) I run my V3 via an SMSL M300SE DAC/headphone amp. Multiple inputs, remote control, great headphone capabilities. $30 more at $110, yes, but wow. It performs as a better preamp. This is what Fosi should be offering.
