2024 Mercedes-AMG EQE 43 SUV First Drive Review: Electrifying Luxury
Mercedes is charging full speed ahead into the electric era, and the all-new AMG EQE 43 SUV is the brand's latest high-performance EV offering. As an electrified equivalent to the gas-powered AMG GLE 53, this battery-powered crossover brings Mercedes' legendary luxury and performance capabilities to the EV space. We recently had the chance to take the EQE 43 for a spin to see if it lives up to the automaker's lofty standards.
Stunning Style Inside And Out
Right off the bat, the EQE 43 makes a strong impression with its sleek, muscular exterior styling. The AMG-specific design cues like the unique front grille, sporty air intakes, and large alloy wheels give it an appropriately aggressive look. Step inside and you're greeted by Mercedes' usual best-in-class luxury cabin loaded with premium materials and the latest tech features. The available Hyperscreen spans the entire dashboard with three integrated displays, providing an ultra-modern cockpit environment.
Punchy AMG Performance
Powering the EQE 43 is a dual-motor AWD powertrain producing 476 horsepower and 633 lb-ft of torque. That muscular output allows it to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The immediate torque response is intoxicating, delivering brutal acceleration at any speed. An adaptive air suspension and rear-axle steering keep the hefty 5,600 lb crossover feeling planted and agile through the curves.
While blisteringly quick, the AMG fine-tuning adds a sense of refinement missing from some competing performance EVs. The regenerative braking system is ultra-smooth, and you can toggle between different levels of regen via the gearshift paddles. Selectable drive modes from Eco to Sport+ adjust power delivery, steering, and suspension for the desired driving experience.
Enough Range To Keep You Charged
Motivation comes from a 90.6 kWh battery pack providing up to an estimated 340 miles of driving range on a full charge. That's more than enough for most daily driving needs. When it's time to recharge, the EQE 43 can handle up to 170kW ultra-fast DC charging to add around 180 miles of range in 20 minutes at an appropriate charging station. At home or public Level 2 AC chargers, it takes around 9.5 hours to recharge from 10-100% battery.
The upcoming uber-AMG EQE 53 with over 600 hp is definitely appealing, but the EQE 43 strikes a nice balance between electrifying performance and everyday usability. It's also slightly easier on the wallet with an expected starting price around $90,000.
Other EVs like the BMW iX M60 and Polestar 3 offer similar power and performance for less money. However, few can match the well-rounded luxury experience and brand cachet of the AMG EQE 43. Mercedes has proven it can build a legitimately thrilling electric performance vehicle without sacrificing its core DNA. The EV future is looking bright indeed for AMG fans.
