Are there any hints in the game as to where these can be found (other than the drone reacting to it when you are nearby)? I don't want to spoil myself, but I also don't want to go through every inch of the maps again. = Some text riddles / clues would made the search way more interesting.

Yes. Slefies unlock free new outfits. Stellar tears are for Nier DLC costumes and hairstyles.
