Are you self-taught? How long does it take to get proficient at Gypsy Jazz? So far I've been stuck playing transcriptions for over a year, but really haven't really tried improvising.

I've taken lessons from a bunch of different guitarists, so I wouldn't say I'm self taught. If you can, definitely jam with other musicians who are also learning this style. It's fun, and I think it makes you improve much faster. I've been playing a long time, however I've seen other musicians get proficient within only a couple of years. I love learning transcriptions, I always have at least 1 on the go. If you're doing that, you can definitely start improvising. I would recommend taking lines you like from the solos you've learnt and use them over other tunes. So, if you learn something over C major for example you can use that line whenever there is a major chord in the tune. I hope this helps. Cheers!
