The critter "choice" scene is so funny because yknow, in the sanctuary they could of set up a specific critter a bit more to be quite likeable and then yknow, have them in one of those freeze pods, an actual morale choice. But no, just some random ass critter that's already evil instead.

I honestly think it adds a bit to Sawyer's patheticness. He's scrambling for anything to emotionally manipulate you with, because it's the only real tool he has at his disposal against your actions. He's a narcissist at heart, so it makes sense.

Thank you for pointing out the legal contract cliché, all these all-powerful contracts in media pretending like signing a contract voids you from the law. If a contract tells you to do something illegal that contract is void, same with an NDA. If you sign an NDA but witness something illegal feel free to break that NDA and get the legal system involved!

@@thehamburglar2420after like 5 minutes of research, based on my information gathered the contract described wouldn’t be legal. the prison would be dubious, it would probably be legal for the prison to be built, we can’t really know if playtime actually owns the cave or not, but for the prison to actually act like a prison, Playtime Co. would have to get permission from the government to run the prison legally, and considering the whole experimentation stuff, that wouldn’t happen. again based on my research, a contract forcing the construction crew to build the prison would also be legally dubious, if the prison being built it’s self was legal, there would still be the coercion route to consider. it could be argued that Playtime Co. coerced the construction manager into signing the contract, and threatened him with the whole cliff pushing business. however, with all of the abhorrent stuff playtime is doing, i don’t think a legally questionable contract is the most of their concerns.

I think it’s pretty sweet how they use the lighting when you encounter either of the wuggies to trick you for a second into thinking it’s the opposite one. They make you think “Huggy’s back! Time to run” or “is that Kissy? Oh god it’s actually Huggy!” They do it the first time you encounter Kissy in chapter 2, the next time you encounter Kissy in chapter 3 and then here at the very end with Huggy

Either there's no walls to keep you from going back and breaking shit, or there's too many walls that fail to let you forward. The weird visual rasterization on Yarnaby in early environments, so many audio glitches... I'd say this thing needed more time in the oven but between the bugs and the gaping holes where cut content is, this feels like it never touched the oven to begin with.

I said it on the vod but it’s really cool that once Doey starts his mental breakdown, you can tell which boy is talking and how they’re handling grief. Especially during the boss fight Matthew blames himself (like he did when his parents died), Kevin blames everyone else and is angry, and Jack is crying that he just wants to go home to see his mom and dad again This made Doey the most sympathetic character(s) so far for me (somehow outstripping CatNap/Theo) And it doesn’t help to see how tragic it is that Kevin’s anger gets the better of him, and he drags the other two boys down with him Edit: rewatching the fight, I’m pretty sure Kevin being a “problem child” is just him being neurodivergent and getting overstimulated when upset, causing him to lash out. (Which, considering that tape about him was from the 90’s, that checks out.) At least that’s how I interpret the “Everything’s too loud. TOO LOUD!” line Edit 2: @3nowStorm on my other comment noticed Jack and Matthew apologize as their final words (Because Jack is sobbing the entire time and Matthew sounds more mature)

It’s hard to label any of the toys evil because at the end of the day, they’re all children who had effectively been experimented on and tortured, before being forced in this kill or be killed scenario. I feel even the most stalwart of adults would have cracked. Chapter 4 was the first poppy chapter to do away with the whole “central hub area” thing, which really helped with navigation and separating parts of the game. Now, the map layout has just devolved into random tunnels thrown together, which I guess makes it more facility-ish? Imo, this probably wasn’t a good idea, because having no clear breaks from the oppressive environment just kinda wears you out and makes you numb to scares.

Portal still made more sense, because the devs still cared to write in how and why it was so large. The Goderich salt mine is 1,800ft BELOW lake Huron, the Morton salt mine is 2,000ft BELOW Lake Erie. Having Aperture purchase one of said salt mines in the mid 19th century and continuing it's testing there is feasible at said depth, just not practical. Poppy's depths however are otherwise impossible, going much, much further down, and have seemingly sprang up out of nowhere.

@ I’ll rewatch the section. I’m pretty sure he was running, walked, and maybe crouched but yarnaby was already after him from him running. I don’t remember spiff crouching at all. But I’ll take a rewatch and see. (Quick rewatch): I did notice yarnaby getting aggro when he walked, but he did start running when being chased. Maybe when too close, yarnaby aggros but idk. Still many bugs nonetheless.

i thought they were going to disguise Ollie being the prototype when he was "attacking" him and you had to repair the generator. The panicked voice to suddenly being chipper made me think that THAT is when Ollie died and became the prototype, and the repair was manipulating you to lower the defenses for him to get in. It's a shame that it was as straightforward as we thought it was though.

They didn't if you pay attention. The prototype can only mimic words and phrases he's heard before in the inflection and tone he heard them. So when Ollie is freaking out and panicking that the Prototype is there. We are actually hearing the Original Ollie last moments. Which is far worse mind fuck in my opinion

@GodsDissapointment idk what you're arguing for. I never said what I mentioned in the original comment that it was what actually happened. I just find it a shame that they most likely knew the community already guessed Ollie was the prototype and they did nothing to subvert expectations. But that's not to say you can't enjoy what they did either. It's subjective. And it's clear the game/devs take liberties with the mimicking of words because during the grand reveal, Ollie saying "is this where you are, Poppy?" In the creepiest and most haunting way possible is them probably breaking that rule for dramatic effect. Unless there is some argument for Ollie to sound like a possessed creep towards Poppy.

The brief discussion about whether or not the Poppy devs make it up as they go along was interesting. As a writer, I can say that the majority of my writing makes itself as I go along. I start with a timeline in my head (probably only a paragraph, collectively) and end up with pages of interactions. Some things will end up changed or removed entirely as one goes along simply because of how it wrote.

I think with the devs it’s a bit more different than that. As the chapters have gone on they’ve only grown bigger and bigger in scope, to the point where the story’s stakes start feeling really silly. To me, it’s a case of not only the writers making it up as they go but wanting to one-up themselves so often that they end up sacrificing the quality of their story in the process (just my opinion tho, I’m not the biggest fan of the overall Poppy Playtime series including its writing, but I do think that engaging with the writing of something I didn’t enjoy is just as important as engaging with the writing of the things I _do_ enjoy)

tbh it's normal for writers to do that (at least writers who care about their story), what's going on here is that they never had any timeline or established worldbuilding to begin with which just turns into a mess going nowhere. i wouldn't be surprised if they don't even know how the story is supposed to end and are just bullshitting it, that's a common issue that makes stories fall apart. at some point you gotta step back and tell yourself "this would be cool yes but it doesn't make sense so i can't do it", which seems to be something you understand well, but also something the poppy's playtime writers refuse to understand or do. the writing was pretty flawed since the start tbh, the protagonist's reason to be there is flimsy at best and it never gets any deeper, which already hurts it a lot, but the increasing amount of "man this is fucked up isn't it? what if it was worse- oh look it's even more fucked up than you thought!" just makes everything fall flat.

@@faeb.9618 Yeah, the writing does have several holes. The first chapter was a great start, but it started getting weird from there. The introduction of the Fucked Up Orphan Home™ and the Red Smoke (to make the world even worse without much explanation as to why it was created) was odd. Those reasons kinda made the last two chapters lame. This chapter was enjoyable to watch, though, despite the story flaws.

I'm not entirely convinced that Spiff trying to break out of bounds with Yarnaby didn't just completely destory his game and cause all the other squence breaking bug maddness that followed. The game was astonishingly stable up until he did that.

One thing that gets to me is that chapter 2-4 completely reframes what Huggy in Chapter 1 and makes it so that he doesn't make sense anymore. Like, the implication that I got out of chapter 1 was that Huggy was a flesh animatronic of sorts, set to guard the facility in case anyone broke in (like we did) and wasn't "turned off" when the factory was abandoned (or purposefully kept on to guard the secrets). In Chapters 2-4, assuming that Huggy is just like the rest of the toys and not particularly special, he is a hungry monster that attacks anything to eat. It's just bizarre that Huggy wouldn't attack us on sight as soon as we walk through the doors and see him (it's also kinda bizarre that Huggy would help us with the key or what not even in the context of Chapter 1 but that's another matter). Anyways, my point is I hope they go back and remaster Chapter 1. As a side note, Huggy was so damn close to freedom. He was two sets of doors away from the outside world. If our protagonist had shown up even 10 minutes later Huggy might have been rampaging through the streets.

Huggy was psychologically conditioned to act as security - that was his purpose, and they trained him for it. He got involved in the Hour of Joy, and then he went back to what he was used to (maybe to conserve energy or something, since he's standing still doing nothing). When someone (the player) came in and security was triggered, he lured them deeper in to trap them, possibly even trying to bait them to trip whatever sensors sic him on intruders so he has an excuse or to get around his conditioning (that last part's speculation on my end). The posters and trailers as of chapter 1 seemed to make it clear that the living toys were made from people, the more specific stuff about how and why was what was elaborated on later.

I really hate what they did with the doctor, and his whole “watching you through the tvs” was only used in a single cutscene (the intro to the prison), his boss fight, and barely being able to see in a few sections, despite there being HUNDREDS of prop tvs. (its not even in the room where he opens the door for yarnaby which has like 20 of them) Also his “boss fight” was so easy to survive since they don’t even insta kill.

Every chapter wants to one-up the previous one, up to this point of the prison, which, admittedly, has been operating for years, but still, the sheer number of bodies just doesn't line up. Yes, it was the 80s-90s, and yes even now kids can just disappear out of the system and it goes uninvestigated, but consistent disappearances from specifically Playtime Co's orphanages on this scale would just be too suspicious to ignore. Particularly the number of people stuck working down here, who, while they might fear repercussions, would still have at least one willing to blow the whistle and report the whole operation. That said, I don't think it's meant to be implied that all the toys ever sold by the factory are alive. They specifically seem to use the living ones as, for one thing, mascots, but also as workers. I vaguely recall this being some attempt at discovering immortality mentioned in, like, chapter 1 or 2, but that was so long ago, though that would make a little more sense as a reason, if the labor force they make them into is more of just them trying to find a use for these living results of their research. Also, I love how the gas literally never does the same thing twice. It sends you into a nightmare based on your surroundings in home sweet home, and into a nightmare based on your memories when Catnap takes your mask. After losing the mask it quickly kills you on contact, and during the boss fight it just makes you hallucinate while otherwise unaffected. After the boss fight it's suddenly explosive, despite not reacting to the flares previously (in fact when I first saw the flare gun gameplay I literally said 'he's lucky this stuff isn't flammable' and then, what do you know, it is when it needs to be). Then, here in chapter 4, it kills you after an extremely long exposure to to, and then after that doesn't affect you at all but does apparently combine into an explosive with some other mystery substances. Truly the plot macguffin of the factory.

the gas itself isnt flammable, its described as an accelerant. the other stuff being mixed around is the actual fuel for the explosion, and the gas makes it much more volatile.

I get why they keep bringing the red gas back - I think it's the closest thing they have to a consistent theme: the gas is supposed to put kids to sleep, the orphans we're trying to get to are supposedly asleep, and what is the one use poppies have (especially in fiction) besides being pretty red flowers? They put people to sleep. It is _very_ convenient that it does whatever the plot needs it to at any given time though, lol

The scale getting bigger and bigger was I think the ultimate flaw of this chapter honestly, like to a ridiculous degree. Chapter 3 deciding they had an entire underground orphanage with the worst cover story imaginable (because I can't imagine they didn't have multiple instances of parents having everything signed and legally ready to go only to be told "you can't adopt this child, we won't tell you why and you cannot see them ever again" per that one tape) was already sort of shaky but I think sort of managed to hang on through the power of ok it's an indie horror game about living toys I'll bite and see how it goes. Chapter 4 blows it out of the water and full into silly land and I don't think it can get back. Having a small nation state of mountains of child corpses literally everywhere in the level immediately stops being tragic and tips the hand on imo the writing scrambling to try and make it seem as awful as possible and the tone just never recovers. There's a small dialogue from Doey that Spiff never got in the work yard about they forced the toys to.... work? There? (They are like 50% smiling critters and Huggies by volume what work) And ones that couldn't or refused to cooperate were starved and tortured by laughing guards and it's just so nakedly a hack job at trying to make it tragic. It's also sort of shoved the company's goals off a cliff because if it's immortality they're still after or who knows what that will apparently better humanity, this chapter certainly makes you ask "but was sewing 10,000 kids into the exact same toy model with the exact same procedure really doing anything whatsoever to actually make progress".

I think the main problem is that instead of 5 parts of a cohesive game, it’s more like 5 small games connected together. As they get more resources they make larger chapters/games, which is good but when part of a singular game it feels inconsistent. Kinda a double edged sword as the devs get to make a larger and definitively better product than if they made it all at once, but the end deviates a lot from the beginning

On the Orphan Count thing apparently there are about 3.2 million children in the US who have lost at least one parent. Not both parents, at least one. Meaning the number who have lost both is likely far smaller but I'll be generous and say 2 million. And from the looks of things all of them are in that first room with the giant piles of critters.

Kids with different personalitay. One is/was the oldest orphan at age 15. Thats the persona taking care of everyone, the rage one is the kid with psychological problems that hurt others during "intense sessions of playing" and the last one is the kid that fell into the mixer, that personality is hidden most of the time. Things to note: The parents of the third child (Jackie) even got to meet him in Doey Form, shortly after transition. Lets just say it didnt end well and DOey wasnt hungry anymore.

14:21 hey! Don’t underestimate the power of having actual data and research for things that are “obvious”! Even if everybody knows something is true, it’s easier to act accordingly and prevent bad apples from ignoring facts if you have actual evidence of it. It’s why we have studies showing things like “studies show that kids grow up healthier if you don’t beat them regularly” or “80% of women report experiencing sexism in the workplace”. It makes it easier to set precedence. I can imagine some scientist who actually cares about the toys writing up that note to create evidence to justify giving them basic and necessary things for survival. The same way that someone was able to convince them that the game station needed false windows so the kids wouldn’t feel so sad from lack of sunlight.

In this specific case, the research notes are actually quite important; they're evidence that not only did the Playtime Co employees experiment on children to turn them into toys, _the children were still conscious after being turned into toys._

There's so many interesting things to bring up in the game I just have to point out some interesting things I've noticed~ - It's kinda sad you find riley's body, you can see her skeleton, she's been here so long. (Also it looks like she's a pugapiller? the head shape, the colors, looks like she was a shorter one, like the ones you see in chapter 2) - I feel the doctor was a missed opportunity he said "not even the ground you walk on is yours." he should of closed spaces off from us, flipped rooms around, slammed doors behind us to scar us and so on. He was kinda lax on stopping us. - I assumed that not all the toys are kids, some are parents of employees(hinted in chapter 2 where one of the toys was a creature on a toilet cursing them out. And Bron the Dinosaur was a sympathetic scientist (maybe even stella) they toyed because she was causing problem. And clearly toys like mommy and Miss delight (maybe even dogday) were adults that just went nuts - Spill doesn't realize the doors aren't for the weaker toys, there are toys strong enough to destroy them, there are three doors knocked off their hinges he doesn't notice. -Doey seems to be made from multiple people, one of them being that employee that yelled in that video, (and or kevin) makes more sense than being the quiet toy standing next to the VHS. -You can see huggy's fur and blood on a wall at the beginning of the chapter, hinting at his return. -Spiff forgets how dangerous kid toys used to be, Yarnaby would totally be a toy they make in the 90's, playcare also makes toys for young adults - Pianosaurus's song distorts and ends in what sounds like a feral growl possibly because hunger drove him like many of the toys, insane. - Continuing from that Doey grabs Pianosaurus with three different colored arms and has three different colored arms on his body, hinting at multiple personalities. - Boxy is named and showed in safe haven (could be children in toys could just be toys don't know from the glance spiff takes) Hinting he might appear in the next chapter - Poppy mentions allies and besides, kissy and Doey and ("ollie") Doyday and the other smiling critters might have also been allies as dogday mentioning fighting back, and you can read on the walls in safe haven "we are losing" dogday and the bear both aren't crossed out however meaning the kids don't know dogday's fate and well I assume the bear is gone too. - Doey's turn is hinted from when his voice would go from cheery to curt multiple times, getting mad at poppy as well. Talking about the doctor starving them. -Kissy's face if you pay attention is burned enough you can see her teeth and her smiling expression is going slack slowly - In safe haven, I don't know if it's the same one, but if you look up there's a living pubapiller, and in a locker a hiding mommy toy, much smaller. - Ollie was once actually a toy, don't know when that changes, but the prototype does state there was once an Ollie (The prototype could of killed the real ollie, or been ollie now crazy) - The prototype speaks in Eddie's voice saying "try to land on your feet." stating he might of maybe pushed the guy off and the prototype may have been near and heard

What if eddie IS the prototype would explain why he says try to land on your feet- I think there's multiple people in him cause the timeline doesn't make much sense since the Prototype was made early on. I'm pretty sure the original comment debating about the red gas got deleted, but also I like how the red gas was foreshadowed to be flammable in chapter 3 in the cat nap boss which I haven't seen many people point out, when you rewatch the cutscene you realize that catnap panics when electrocuted and while stumbling around he releases his red gas which INSTANTLY makes him set ablaze I've heard people complain about the red gas being inconsistent with what it does, but the flammable thing was set up surprisingly well, the catnap cutscene makes much more sense now, although the hallucinations are still a bit wacky

Game was the buggiest thing imaginable. I also had no Yaranaby spawn, but the Doctor's sequences were completely messed up. Sound files replaying from previous saves past checkpoints and we got to a point where the game after killing him thought he was still alive and continued to play old clips.

It's easy to forget that the monsters in Poppy are almost all children that have been tortured in unimaginable ways. Some of them have been reduced to feral creatures whilst others remember exactly what they've been through. It really is horrifying, and Doey's character is especially tragic.

I'm really glad I didnt even watch the TRAILERS for this chapter. I went in completely blind, because I knew this was the first video i wanted to watch on chapter 4. this game just feels like theyre trying to make toys now, i get thats the whole point but that one piano dog thing that was immediately killed off but will definitely still actually be sold in real life and had an add longer then its game time is kinda weird. It feels like they care more about making more poppy products then games, like how this was the first game not delayed and was announced the fastest, like they wanted to capitalize more on the brand

The question of what the toys eat is confusing to me too. The game has things like cans of peas and beans around safe heaven, but they don't have usable mouths. And theres a metric tone of stuffing, so they could just grab that. And if its flesh then I don't see how they could be sold as toys at all.

There were clues. The Prototype being revealed to mimic voices was a clue at the end of chapter 3. The dialogue Ollie has in chapter 4 suggests he can somehow see you, like mimicking what Poppy says at the start.

I find it funny that spiff unintentionally found a skip that deloads yarnaby from the stealth section after fuckery, saving maybe a good 10-20 seconds of waiting for yarnaby. Personally, I still love ch3 the most. I had lots and lots of bugs and glitches happen in the first playthrough, and had to put the game on the lowest quality so the chasm boss fight would have more than 10fps. I get that these things happen, it's a small studio, but even beyond just the performance, I didn't really feel it. I feel like this chapter has so much missed potential. The Doctor was super hyped up as this giga brain, and in the first encounter he seems to be basically omni-potent and just playing with you. And that feeling is almost immedietally gone. He gets jars of organs, a black sheep "boss" fight(?), and like the weirdest endo/weeping angel style boss fight ever. When I played through I had no idea how the tv men are triggered or calmed, but they were barely a threat. And then he's dead, time to move on to the least plot twisty villian of all (He was on the cover of the chapter, which is always the antagonist of the chapter) which was just so scuffed. It dragged on in the chasm, due to the teleports, wacky physics, it felt like a chore. And then we find out Gregory was a mimic, I mean Prototype. Shocker, anyways. Then we get one cutscene and grand reveal of Huggy still living. I didn't find it shocking, or plot twisty, but I think that one is good, he got very little screen time, and has a lot of still untapped potential. In terms of the story though, it was a lot of nothing, just dialing up the gruesome nature of playtime co. We get some dialogue about Poppy being actually at fault or something, which is bonkers, and I reallly hope they don't make her betray you in ch5, or you betray her. But I also don't have high hopes for ch5. They have kept most things a mystery, for a giant grand reveal for ch5, but I think it's a bad idea, because it will mean ch5 will either have to be like 3 times the lenght of ch3 at least, or it will feel very rushed, or it will leave out things people want to know for no reason. I love this game, but personally this chapter wasn't really it. I am hoping ch5 is going to turn it back around and give it a good ending this game deserves.
