I have returned back from Malaysia right and that lion boss looks almost just like the lion dance u would see in Chinese New Year, especialy with the mask, the red cloak covering the multitudes of limbs behind and the almost writhing movement that reminds of that dance I have seen many times when I was a kid. I love this boss design already.

As a Malaysian, that’s definitely how i feel looking at that boss. I wonder (if its really a mask), it’ll confuse the heck out of you when fighting it thinking thats the head but the head is actually somewhere in the robe. Cant wait to get back into this!

That's the inspiration. Miyazaki said in an interview that it's a remnant of a culture that existed before Marika became a goddess and this Erdtree sprang in the Land of Shadow.

7:08 This part reminds me of the motif played in the second stage theme of the Erdtree avatar ost. So I’m guessing this is a new theme composed by Tai Tomisawa, due to him composing the Erdtree avatar motif in the main game. My personal guess is that this theme is most likely some sort of servant, or knight that serves the Golden Order in the past, but has now become corrupted due to the shadow realm.

So, considering how George wrote the Mythos for Elden Ring, i assume alot of its characters were left off from the main story since they had no role to play, Messmer was probably one of such characters. My personal theory thus far is that Messmer had some sort of Blackfyre rebellion-esque war against the erdtree many centuries or even millennia before the shattering, one so destructive his image and memory was wiped clean from the lands between and thats what lead the shadow lands to be cast out of the material realm the erdtree currently exists in (thats why the shadow lands exist in the shadow of the erdtree). Im probably wrong though and thats fine, i believe Miyazaki will cook a fine dine when it comes to Messmer's lore. One thing i do believe in however is that hes def not the big bad guy of the DLC, just like how Lady Maria was in the cover for old hunters but wasnt the final boss of that expansion.

Given his snake iconography, Messmer was perhaps the original reason for why the ‘First Cardinal Sin’ of the Erdtree was created, due to his betrayal to the Erdtree - as its stated that the Snake was a “traitor” to the Erdtree. Presumably under allegiance with the Erdtree until the first burning of the Erdtree. These are just theories, nothing confirmed Also, yes, I think he’ll be ER’s Lady Maria. Godwyn, Miquella or Marika (or someone else) will be the main villain

I believe the lion head is part of Godwyn. The hair, the roots in the back, the lion that refers to Godfrey, the lightning he learned from dragons… All that screams that Miquella managed to bring his brother back, in some capacity.

It’s actually similar to a Chinese dragon puppet, there are multiple people inside of it. It is also not Godwyn as Miyazaki said something to the effect of “There was a culture in the lands of shadow before Marika arrived, and we wanted to show that remnants of that culture. For example that Lion boss is apart of that lost culture”

The portion around 1:20, right after the foot stomps, the music, but primarily the vocals, are almost 1:1 with the climactic opening for the second verse of Slave Knight Gale's boss theme in Dark Souls 3 (round about the 2min mark of that ost). That was one of my favorite themes in FromSoft history, so this got my so excited for the DLC.

When you said "Oh, it's good to be back" I really felt that. I can't wait! I get some vibes from the music in the trailer, especially in the fight with the chinese-dragon-lion looking thing I'm reminded of Godfrey/Hoarah Loux both in the music and the way it moves (plus he was also wearing a lion in the base game). Also the frantic strings at one point gave me Darkest Dungeon feels.

A thing that is common in Fromsoft's trailers is that they never use (as far as I'm aware) original music for them but OST from the game's bossfights: ER had Malenia for the story-trailer, Godfrey the launch trailer and generally the main theme/Radagon's for the rest. So I'm really hyped to see whom this theme is going to be too! Maybe Messmer, but looking back at Bloodborne's DLC they used Ludwig's OST... we'll see...!

The sopranos are SOOOO reminiscent of Dark Souls 3. I think they really made the music allot better. Not to say the OST was bad it just didn't hit me like DS3 did. NOW however, the music is really hitting me and I think has to do allot with themes between the base game and DLC. The base game was allot about being unable to die. No mater how many times you die you are birthed again by the tree. Now that death has been released, now it's all about facing death I think and the music reflects that like DS3 did. I'm also really excited about the crucible knight flying attack that I really wanted to go with my crucible knight aesthetic. I'm so excited.

of course im biased but man, i discovered you through fromsoft music, and im a massive fanboy for their music and their games, when this comes out dude, i know you and everybody here is gonna be talking about this for ages. this is gonna be so hype. i love the contrast of elden ring's grand, aggressive and imposing low register to the more overwhelming atmospheres of previous titles. i think the more minor and dissonant theme here as opposed to the first elden ring trailer, kind of leads us to feel that the story in this dlc is a bit more bleak and the stakes are higher. in the first game, we were on the journey to becoming elden lord, going after godfrey's throne, challenging the very gods, (depending on how you played the game of course) but i feel like the emotion in this trailer is more like we are now the ones under threat narratively. miquella showing up in the story and the absolutely badass and imposing design of messmer i feel like is the game telling us, this is the danger, the evil, and we should feel imposed. but that classic more triumphant harmony of the first elden ring theme comes back as the trailer shows the new tarnished abilities to make us feel like yeah its scary, but we stand a chance. nah, we'd win. and the visuals and the setpieces they used for the trailer just elevates how the music feels in such a huge way, its insane. god this game is so fucking good

Ive watched this trailer like 5 times now at least and all the designs have fascinated me in terms of lore and gameplay. My current idea/hope for what this turns out to be is the forgotten/hidden history behind the erdtree era or whatever and perhaps Messmer is the sort of gatekeeper keeping people from discovering the truth or something of the sort, sort of how Morgott stands guard in front of Godrick's castle preventing tarnished from advancing too far. This DLC has given me the vibe that this is going to be very connected to the main game of elden ring sort of how the artorias dlc in ds1 connects all the dots of many things of the history of the game.

After rewatching previous DLC trailers, I realized that they like to use the theme of someone important from the DLC and use it in the trailer. You see that in DS3's Ringed City DLC, the trailer music was just Gael's OST. DS2 did the same as well. So yeah this could be Messmer's OST being played in the trailer. I fully expect the OST to eclipse the tracks we got in the base game

The range of emotions expressed here is giving Tai Tomisawa. When listening back to Godfrey, Tree Avatar, Godskin Apostles, and even Placidusax, there’s a unique way Tomisawa uses strings with a wide range of tone. I’m not a music genius, so I do not know what this song will mean for it’s given bossfight story wise, but the actual instrumentation follows a pattern found within Tomisawa’s works - often being less a sad and sombre tone (like Kitamura), but more a very desperate and aggressive one. He’s one of my favourites from the soundtrack too. I can’t wait to end up being wrong and fooling myself lolol. The music sounds fantastic regardless, as per the usual with Fromsoftware’s DLCs
