Welcome to Season 4 of FTB Film Study! Caught in the middle of a Perfect Storm of Opt-Outs, Injuries, and Innovative Offensive Play-Calling from visor/fake Twitter account enthusiast Lane Kiffin, Penn State's defense looked like a shell of its normal self in the Peach Bowl. Coach Codutti shows how Manny Diaz's absence -- and a thinned-out depth chart -- resulted in a handful of costly blown assignments that we simply didn't see all season from the nation's No. 1 Defense.

Great content as always, a couple things from this game were very eye opening. 1. Lans Kiffin is a phenomenal play caller and has built a sneaky good team that may be a legit national title contender next season. 2. You saw how much wide receiver play matters in todays football, its alarming how bad ours are. 3. Im genuinely concerned that Allar does not have the mental toughness to be "the guy".

The one thing I did like about Drew in this game, because I went back and watched some again, he was calm and did a very good job in his progression, just which is even scarier, receivers were absolutely once again not open!!! How many times did you see him eventually even it was a completion or not, go back to T. Warren? He also, I think in his mind on purpose was not using the check down to the running backs, because let's be honest, he and all the players hear everything about how we aren't explosive and he thinks checking down is what Yursich taught him, and he wanted to show he could create the big play, even if it wasn't there!!!! Frustrating, but it is his first year as a starter, hopefully the new offensive coordinator can fix this bullshit!!! Because, next season even a lot of Nittany nation will not be making excuses for young Drew!!! WE ARE

- It’s a little easy to say opt out alone hurt us. On offense, there were receiver problems all year. We went away from the run and didn’t target the receivers until the 4th quarter. On defense, we had a pass rush, it just came down to the corners where Miller’s been torched before. Dixon’s decision was known well in advance. - If Elliot Washington, Audavion Collins and Zion Tracy weren’t ready, why wasn’t someone ready to move over from safety [as back up]? All year, we were thin at corner with a lot of young backups. Played all year for a bowl game and weren’t ready when it came. We had to twist arms to get departing players back for one more game. - We went three-and-out three times in the third quarter. No half time adjustments. No adjustments or short, easy throws to get Allar on track. -Depending on Lambert-Smith and some other decisions, we're around 90 scholarships. Ford Jr. and Tengwall may be medicals. You don’t hover around the scholarship limit without knowing who’s coming and going even if it’s not announced publicly. Looking to 2024, there's not a lot of room for Fleming, Rogers Lucas or secondary help if they’re going to get under the limit.

And btw that second clip isn't a blown coverage it's a gd read and a gd play call it's clearly a disguised cover 3 look and Jaxson read it like a book the seams are always open against cover 3 especially if the safety is rotating over late. Plz watch lanes scheme vs every defense u will never see more guys running wide open lane is an elite offensive mind he will blow your coverages regardless. And the td to the rb they wanted to send 7 guys w only 6 blocking bc they expected the rb to pick up a blitzed but instead of sending him out to the flat which most likely would've been picked up they sent him up the middle which made it look like he's picking up the blitz but instead he's running directly past u it's fairly simple and it puts the blitzer who was tasked with picking up the rb in an impossible situation

Outstanding break down. Do u think giving up inside leverage is a result of Diaz’s design or a mistake by the CBs? Ohio State kills us every year on slant patterns and it seems like our corners consistently release to the inside where the middle is wide open. Extremely frustrating to watch. I appreciate u breaking down Allar. IMO he isn’t athletic enough to get his footwork down fast enough. He appears awkward like Big Ben from the Steelers. Always throwing off his back foot. I think Allar also holds the record for most passes batted down at the line. I’m not a Pribula fan bc running QBs are 1 hit away from destruction like the Florida State QB. After watching Texas, Ole Miss, and Washington play I’m pissed that we didn’t scheme the offense the way these teams did bc I think Allar would have thrived under the play book of these teams. So tired of the Big Ten dinosaur offenses and PSU blew it this year for not scheming for a pocket passer

Great breakdown. Confirmed a lot of what I thought I saw on Saturday. First, people going nuts over Lane Kiffin's genius are... well they are mis-guided. Kiffin was no doubt smart to take advantage of our opt outs; but, it was the *opt outs* who no doubt cost us. Second, Dex (IMO) showed why Franklin didn't go in-house with the DC hire. He was totally outmatched--did nothing to protect his young corners (though it didn't help that a noncommittal Kalen King stole practice reps and misled the coaching staff) and gave up fade after fade. I really did feel badly for the young corners, because you could see they just were not prepared, even though they are talented kids. Hopefully gives the defensive guys some hunger for the off-season.

If your number 2 corners aren't prepared by game 13, I don't really know what to tell you. Opt outs or not, as you pointed out, there were fundamental problems with the DB scheme that may have been there all season (don't know, I'm an Ole Miss fan) that were papered over with the tremendous pressure from the front 7. We live under pressure all season with the Alabamas, Georgias, and LSUs (in a normal year) of the world. But they get pressure bringing 5, not 7 like Penn State did. Once we adjusted and sped up the routes and throws, it was going to be all over and it was.

To the fans holding on to the Opt-Out theory, if you find comfort in saying opt-out was the reason for losing, so be it. In reality, the opt-outs are quitters and not teammates. What caused all of these opt-outs. Recommend looking at culture and leadership of your program. If the players were playing for each other = no opt-outs. I would look at the head coach decisions. Firing a coach in season with no plan b, great motivator for offensive players (not). This motivation carries over to defense. Proven by opt-outs. The surprise was the players opting out during the game. Were they tired of playing? Did they know the game wasn't going their way? No confidence in the coaching staff? The surprise is something to be concerned about. And, may be a big problem for 2024. Best wishe on the new year.

opts out i get. however, there are two sides of the ball. States offense is not very good. no WR whatsoever. OM adjusted to control the run cuz they were never afraid of the passing game. You can't blame their defensive struggles on opt outs. Look around the country PSU had less opt outs then almost every school. They had 3 to 4 guys out we had 3-4 guys out PSU was just out matched ole miss could've scored 50 on them but lane called the dogs off. Can't just blitz the whole defense every play and expect your corners no matter who they are to win every rep one on one against elite wr's. The last time tre Harris was left one on one he went for over 200 yds 😂. He's one of the best 50/50 ball guys in the country

Penn State was down 6 starters just on defense with an additional 2 defensemen playing limited snaps. There were 3 full opt outs on defense (2 NFL 1st/2nd rounders and an NFL late rounder) that didn't play a single snap, 2 partial opt outs (an NFL 1st rounder and an NFL 3rd/4th rounder) that played very few snaps in the 1st half and then sat the entire 2nd half, Abdul Carter (a huge impact LB) got injured in the 1st half and sat the 2nd half, and then you had the 2 starting DTs play limited snaps. Ole Miss was effectively playing against Penn State's 2nd string defense without their defensive coordinator lol. It was not even close to the same defense that played in the regular season. There were an additional 4 starters missing on offense (3 projected NFL draft picks and an injured player), but that of course wasn't Penn State's biggest problem on offense. I looked into it, and it looks like Ole Miss was only down 2 starters for the game: Cedric Johnson (NFL opt out) on defense and Micah Pattus (Inj) on offense. It sounds like you're either just making stuff up or you're comparing some of your depth players being out to our starters / NFL early draft picks being out. Anyway actually, yeah you can blame a lot of PSU's defensive struggles on opt outs.

@@lifeislikeaboxofchocolates5383 There were players that sat out the entire 2nd half but at the same time only took very limited snaps in the 1st half. We only knew of 1 opt leading up to the game, then there were 3 more that we found out about right before the game. Then later we found out about the limited participation of many of the others (I guess people who pay super close attention to who's playing saw it right away). The "3" number you heard before might just be them referring to the 3 defensive opt outs we knew about at the time the game started, and to be fair those 3 were the biggest difference makers. But you can certainly believe me. I wouldn't just make this shit up out of nowhere.
