What’s going to get lost in the narrative and good vibes here is that it never should have gotten to this point. Minnesota is 6-5, and they outplayed Penn State on both sides of the ball. PSU played yet another smoke-and-mirrors, ultra conservative offensive scheme. The two best parts of the game on offense for Penn State where when they threw deep to Evans for a TD, and when they dropped all the mindless shifting (that fools absolute no one!) in the 3rd quarter and just called standard plays and moved the ball down the field and scored. The fact that the fake punt was needed to preserve a 1-point lead over a weak opponent who was a double-digit underdog is pretty disgraceful. Another game, another spread that failed to be covered.

Yinz perfectly encapsulated my sick feelings about Penn State playing Minnesota. We (husband & I) were at that 1999 game, my first semester at University Park as a sophomore. I will never forget the feeling of walking home from that game. And the 2019 game? Scars, forever. Prolonged by the subsequent hiring of Ciarrocca as the disaster of an assistant. Minnesota played “1999” in the stadium after the 2019 game. Epic trolling. They knew what they did.

Hey guys, should the BIG and or the NCAA, really look into just playing all 12 games in the conference? The SEC, ACC, Big 12, etc playing all of their games in their respected conferences, also. No one could then piss and moan about about this team playing Youngstown State or that team is playing Mercer.... 31-13 this weekend.

Hey Mark. Thanks for watching/commenting. I really hope your score prediction is close to the mark (no pun intended)! I've seen that idea tossed around, and I think there's a non-zero, but also not high, chance of it happening one day, far down the line. We're definitely seeing the issues with 16/18-team leagues play out this year. The structure and finances of the sport are so fluid, but for the present, a major obstacle is the need for seven homes every year to bring in enough revenue. The Akrons of the world make that possible by not demanding a reciprocal home game in return for a nice payday. There's also some value in those kinds of games if you're not going to play any kind of a preseason. Two fixes I'd love to see sooner than later: The SEC going to nine conference games (don't hold your breath) and progress on the rumored scheduling agreement between the B1G and SEC. I do think the number of conference games will increase in the future, but I'm not anxious for it. I'd rather see more variety added to the usual slate of familiar opponents.
@Unclejunior1523 күн бұрын
@@ChrisBuchignaniThe variety is what makes college football great. If I'm honest, as a season ticket holder for pretty much my whole life, I enjoy the cupcake games just as much as the premier matchups! Being able to enjoy a day of tailgating without having to worry about a loss is great!

Instead of more conference games during the regular season, it's more likely they add conference semifinal games, to ensure the top teams in each conference all play each other.....always assume the solution that generates more money.
@ChrisBuchignaniКүн бұрын
@@Unclejunior152 Agreed. And in addition to the "preseason" developmental aspect of those nonconf games, I like that they give families that opportunity to get to a game. Tickets are way more affordable and easier to get, and you need to keep providing the next generation the chance to experience and fall in love with Penn State football in Beaver Stadium. Balance is good!
@ChrisBuchignaniКүн бұрын
@@davidnakonecznyj2983 I think that's right David (you're definitely correct about defaulting to the "more money" solution). I haven't really thought through the logistics of it, but there's probably a better way to monetize the "first round" of the playoffs than conference championship games involving tiebreakers so confusing the conference front offices can barely understand them that also stand to punish the losers for being good enough to qualify.

My questions/takeaways: 1.) PSU runs an option offense with a pro style qb 2.) Franklin said Pribula didn’t get it done in practice to warrant a start vs osu 3.) Pribula (run) , grunk (quick release) are better decision makers for this O 4.) Allar kept running on an injured knee. Couldn’t Pribula have done this? 5.) Pribula should have played vs OSU 6.) O-Line is solid but not against good teams 7.) if you can’t win line of scrimmage, then use the gimmicks. Where were the gimmicks vs. osu? 8.) PSU has beaten nobody this year
@stephenhaynes30734 күн бұрын
Given what we know about Warren, why haven't most defenses rotated more coverages over to him and made Allar beat them using the wideouts? If PSU makes the playoffs, the level of defense is going to be higher.

Coach, I love this breakdown as always. This is clearly a unicorn offense. How is an offense that doesn't throw to the WRs 5th in the FBS in yards per play - over 7? Seems like equal parts Warren, Allar and Kotelnicki. If Singleton ever gets back to 100%, I shudder to think what this offense could become.

oh - meant to say - the best cat&mouse was the goaline stand -- have a vid i may upload on the details of how this played out... p1-ref blocking the quick snap - p2-allen almost broke it - p3 same exact scheme!! - p4 the No Man's Land D by Knowles - great schemes + PSU going 100% w/ tendency
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Great Cat&Mouse as you say - agreed - but every game will have this. I will say that Day/Kelly and Allen are experienced play callers so yes - this sets up for some fun breakdowns. But at this point there are definitely more innovative and more importantly, more effective Schemers out there in the college game. Chip's no longer at the top and I don't just blame this on Ryan Day. I think they are in agreeance with what they are doing and I definitely don't think it's maximizing the potetial OSU has on that side of the ball. Knowles is excellent btw - just ran up against the incredibly underrated Will Stein of Oregon. Kotelnicki is a good one and finally Franklin is letting one of his OCs have some autonomy (first since Moorhead), but not in Goaline Situations. There's no way I blame that play-calling at the goaline on Coach K, because we've seen this many times over from Franklin teams. Even going back to Vandy. Scared at crunch time. I actually like Franklin. Think he's done a great job with a tough situation at PSU -- but he's stalling at the top. I'm not sure he can get better recruiting than he has and his operations are sound -- so it comes down to scheme and the overall culture. There's hope for you PSU fans as we see he can actually let a talented OC do his thing - but still - at crunch time - you have to take the gloves off.. easy for us to say from the cheap seats...
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play 11 - NOW this looks like the coverage #9 thought was happening in Play 10! This looks like a C2 Match Up -- 2 High with a CB(#9)+S and one S dropping as a Robber into a Tampa2 look. #1 and #13 are slow to the crossers, thus both of these guys are open if they settle in the window as you say. Allen is a tough DC to follow. He does some cool stuff, but sometimes there's just not enough variety - other times he really mixes up his looks, but the players struggle with it. Plus - match coverage is better than Match Up Zone for the most part. Match Up Zone is good for variety not as the base coverage, imo. BTW, the 21 yr old CFB QB is not adept enough in his reads to be finding these secondary guys open in windows - that's ok - but again, the question - are Day/Kelly with their pro-style nonsense doing what's best for this QB and these skill guys on Offense. OSU is winning as long as they don't face a top OC like Stein who can burn our great Defense. Lastly - I agree - maybe not technically - but cmon! - that was a fumble. This coming from a Buckeye fan.
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play 10 - You didn't clarify what PSU is running here? Looks like a Qtrs pre-snap rolled into C3 MatchUp Zone. #5 needs to pass off the wheel route to #9 - but #9 is playing like a Qtrs safety Technique looking for a crosser or dig route?? This isn't hard -- there's more complicated coverages. I know some of these DBs are new, but this is terrible and has nothing to do with some genius play-call by CKelly. Mesh is a Man-Beater more than a Zone-Beater. Talk to Kurt Warner - he hates the mesh exactly because he feels it's so bad vs zone. So Allen - like Chip - has shown so little Variety up until now, that by breaking tendency and dropping out of Man Qtrs into C3 MatchUp Zone he burned OAU - and the players screwed it all up. IF these guys executed correctly - the whole mesh + the wheel is accounted for and the blitz has Howard in trouble.
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play 9 - JJ stopped running because Tate underneath was so open on the crosser! Freshman mistake, but the blame is on the 21 yr old College QB that's not in the pros. (haha) Just take what the D gives you. Let the Brady's of the world make other worldly decisions. Tate was too wide open to pass up. BUT... that 21 yr old also gave a great play-fake that both LBs bit horribly on! That's why Tate was so open underneath. The LBs didn't drop. Again - conservative Scheme by chip (yes you nailed it - just a WC Pro Spread thing), but great timing of the call and great teaching to Will who's been excellent at his ball handling! Which begs the question --- WHY NOT MORE POWER SPREAD FROM CHIP WITH A PS QB!@!??
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play 8 - great example of front 6 over compensating for Stagnant Schemes. In other words - when the Schemes don't have Aggressive Variety, then the players start compensating with overaggressiveness and over variety. What does Over Variety mean? Running around out of your assignment doing the assignments of others - this is dangerous times vs a talented team. Also, Chip may not be Chip of old, but he's experienced enough to take advantage of over-aggression. Fake Read Option Speed Option is one nice wrinkle that works.
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play 7 - Yes - that Dscheme vs Read Option comes back to haunt you. But a good play by DeLuca #0 on this one. He also played desperate and left his responsibilities late in the game. But he's a good one. PSU has good D talent. Allen is a decent DC. But it's just not great vs great talent and/or great DCs. You think you had trouble vs CKelly - try Will Stein or DeBoer - these guys would eat Allen for lunch.
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play 5 & 6 - Great Analysis. An example of Chip NOT breaking tendency. Cat & Mouse yada yada - it's the overall concept of Aggression with Variety. Chip's lost his Chops. Good execution by Rojas on play 5! So he wasn't all bad. Then Ellis #99 - compare this to the last drive - you will see a different Ellis. He is important because #28 doesn't have the sand in his pants. Ellis is a crusher. But he needs to be emotionally driven like he is here. Not depressed the way he played that last drive. The one OSU fans and Day think they proved their toughness vs a depressed, desperate Defense.
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play 4 - yes I agree - best scheme of this vid. Great timing of the call after some conservative under center or pistol runs. Again, breaking tendency. Chip did this same set up vs Oregon - tons of conservative runs/passes then mis-direction play action - similar to McVay. Almost want to say Shanahan as well, but Shanahan is more creative. Either way - Chip - the PS King - is now a Pro guy...ugh... Allen doesn't have enough variety in the modern age. MatchUp Zone or m2m. Sometimes Match coverage but not enough. There's a reason everyone started copying Saban's match schemes. This actually looks like a Match coverage and #11 should have had the crosser. But looking at the film you see #5 hitting #41 determining who has who. So you are correct it's m2m. #41 had the RB - got out late. More importantly #5 had the crosser and simply doesn't seem to know. SO .. first off - horrible exectuion - guys don't even know who their man is.. secondly - not good enough in Gameplanning and Scheming by Allen. Of course if you are going MatchUp Zone or M2M repeatedly, an experienced OC is going to burn you. Add in OSU talent and this is a problem. Said it in my podcast at start of year - losing Diaz outweighs gaining Kotelnicki... Diaz was the best DC under Franklin and it shows.
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play 3 - Again, too much credit given to Chip. Teams run 4 and 5 eligibles to one side of the field now.. even the nfl every once and a while! Nothing that innovative except for the timing of the play call. He did this vs oregon as well. Lulled the D to sleep with a lot of conservative schemes and play calling, then do something slightly exotic and suddenly Breaking Tendency becomes HUGE. This is very Pro Style... Chip post-NFL. Screwup by PSU in scheme and execution. First off - it WAS speed option - but PSU was so ill prepared that the keeper was non-existant. Both Rojas and the DE jumped on the QB - terrible. Maybe Allen wasn't prepared for this unbalanced set. Chip has kept it under wraps as osu has been very conservative this yr. Still - you either have to have the DE prepared to drop out with a LB blitz -- then the LB has the QB and DE the pitch. In this case it looked very conventional from Allen. Therefore - the LB (who actually pointed to his man) had the RB - THUS, he needed to wide IMMEDIATELY! Instead he blitzed! Terrible execution and teaching/gameplanning during the week.
@PowerSpreadXO5 күн бұрын
Play2 - It's tricky to pick out the fake ROs and RPOs because there's a lot of different types of reads. I believe you are correct about this being a fake RO or straight up Inside Zone - however you like. Durant's a bit light in the pants and can be mauled, which creates LBs losing gap integrity. The last drive saw horrible gap integrity by Psu, but they were distraught, panicked a bit - a lot of emotion happening as they blew another big game - mainly because of the offense. OSU fans thinking they were something special on that last drive, but really it was just Timing Situational. But yes - i agree with some of the psu fans here - bad gap integrity - and again, Allen doing nothing special this play schemewise. Everyone does the gap exchange thing now. Now you could say that the fake RO by Chip was cool - but not when you do this - a lot - every week. Chip's an experienced gameplanner and playcaller - but his schemes are far from the innovative ones we saw when he was at Oregon. He's still creative - but his overall concepts are now bland - fine for NFL - but I expected more from him this year. College is where you can experiment - have fun!
