It is so fantastic to see so many female polymaths here! Thank you Dr Salrmatshe for this fantstatic speech. Allow me one comment, please. I am not a fan of the terms "specialists" and "generalists", because it gives the idea that a polymath cannot be a specialist in any or even some of the fields they move. My intuition is that polymathy is different mental structure, just as authism or other mental divergencies. Polymathy come also with a set of specific needs which - at least in my experience - are systematically denied to polymaths, sometimes even by intention, but mostly by lack of knowledge and understanding.

@eminem5653 жыл бұрын
@Mike Fuller I think the person who knows more than 4-5 languages are considered as polyglot. And it's not considered as a part of polymath. Also, a lot of polymaths lived centuries ago. Back then ppl had lack of knowledge in studies back then. And it was very common back then becoming an polymath because of lack of studies back then. Nowadays it takes us 3-4 years to master a degree because of lot of information we are collecting throughout years and all of those are adding into education.

It's hard being a perfectionist and a polymath, ain't it? I have a lot of interests and I know I'm not as good as the masters in that field. So, the perfectionist in me procrastinates and I can't finish projects since it's not perfect.

Its really nice to know I’m not alone, AND that there’s a reason why my loved ones don’t understand me the way I understand me. I personally enjoy writing stories and illustrating them to explore the knowledge I absorb. I never post or share any of it though because all my life I’ve been treated like I was crazy over this part of myself. Maybe one day, I will have the confidence to do so, but until then.. What about you guys? Any polymaths in the comment section? How do you explore or utilize the knowledge you soak up? Who or what are some of your influences in your pursuit of knowledge? Let’s talk (:

Bookmark articles you like. Sort them into categories. Highlight what you find important. Recreate them visually using graphs, charts, mindmaps etc. Make infographics out of them. Today, any venture you start online needs an understanding of technology, business, management, marketing, psychology, economy, design. Have a few main interests and learn parts of these aspects pertaining to your main interests.

okay, now how do I use all these talents without sacrificing financial freedom? Each degree will dig me into a hole of debt I'll never get out of. I'm really happy I'm not alone, but trying to unburden myself from the chains the monomath is difficult if not impossible it seems. The only career options open to me look to be dead end jobs that provide no opportunity for achievement, progress or learning. what do I do?!
@taylorpayton70248 жыл бұрын
I too have struggled with this question. However, I believe that one doesn't need to seek their education in establishments solely, for that would in fact be the pathway to debt and despair. instead, I highly suggest learning one or two highly-remunerative skills such as salesmanship or coding. This way you can acquire larger sums of money and thus have more freedom to pursue your many interests. Study wealth, create income streams, network with those who have large budgets and provide a service to them. Once you're set in your niches, this means you'll have the money to parlay into your education via books, classes (not necessarily collegiate) and mentorships. I still haven't made a whole lot of money despite being a model, actor, entrepreneur, and illustrator, but every day I learn more, and every year my income streams grow. It's merely a matter of thought and labor. I hope that helps!
@MichaelCzajka3 жыл бұрын
Depends a bit on which country you're in? Multiple degrees are not always super expensive e.g. In Australia you never pay back your HECS debt until your income exceeds $47K. In fact 75% of HECS debts are never paid back. No danger of digging yourself a hole of debt that you'll never get out of? :-)

Nice. I am: highly adept in music composition & production, statistics, and non-fictional writing; adept in law, medicine, physics, and drawing/sketching; and pretty good with video-making along with a few other things. I've bench-pressed 150 kg for what that's worth. Thanks! I came to the same conclusion in the last few years. I'm over pretending I don't know as much, or often more, than specialists. I'm tired of being put in a box (main career). Oh, I'm also exhausted most of the time :) I salute *respectful* specialists. The rest I don't have a lot of time for. So funny you studied up on TED talks; yep, that's what I'd do too!
