However energy density could be greatly improved by using metal air batteries but those are damned difficult to make rechargable and practical.

Yes but not all in one battery. Li-S can do over 400 Wh/kg. Graphite-LiFePO4 is pretty safe due to low voltage and lasts 10,000 cycles. Al-ion can charge in a few seconds (but low energy density)
