That tailgate net does not reduce drag. Actually it causes more drag because the airflow now gets sucked down at a steeper angle into the truck bed, causing drag inducing air vorticies to form off the back end of the cab because now the airflow off the back of the cap is too steep. Air voticies are big drag generators. However, with the truck's tailgate left on it blocks airflow and creates a pocket of air in the truck bed that airflow rides over but more importantly lessens the angle airflow is coming off the back of the truck's cab to where it's not generating air vorticies. I've worked in aerospace and anything that generates air vorticies is redesigned so it doesn't. Again because air vorticies are big drag generators.

trucks aren’t exactly the most aerodynamic vehicles anyways, plus tailgate nets look ugly and cheap

That afects gas millage. On this vehicle the gas millage don't matter
