Seeing your fellow soldiers getting gunned down, heads blown clean off, seeing people with missing limbs, seeing mighty tanks crush people like tomatoes and destroy buildings, seeing thousands of artillery shells raining hell to your position, hearing the planes flying above you, hearing the cries of pain from injured soldiers or innocent civillians that got in the way, its just, insanity. Theres even a quote that goes like "Everyone dies in war. Even if a person survives and goes back home, he is not the same person anymore". The whole horror of the early 20th century is that so many bright young men volunteered for service because they had been conditioned to think it would be a glorious adventure. All they got was mindless and needless suffering. All their families got was dead fathers and sons while the ruling elite enjoyed a life of luxury that was paid for with the blood of an entire generation. There is nothing honorable or impressive about mindlessly going to war for the sake of nationalistic expansion. There's arguably something honorable about doing it to defend innocent lives in the face of an aggressor, but even that is a slippery slope and changes nothing about the fact that war is fundementally evil and insane. I write all of this as a Christian who truly believes that I would rather die for nothing than kill just for my country. Don't fall into the trap. War is an abomination and a stain on the soul of humanity.

Can't believe my great grandfather would live through something so horrifying as this. He ended up being a sturmmann. WWI stormtrooper. He left for the USA soon after the war in 1920s. Then had many children (13) and took care of them all through the depression. Totally different breed of man. In photos he has such a kind face and a twinkle in his eye. He was said to be one of the most kind and honest people, always quick with a joke and wore a constant smile under his giant brush of a mustache. He apparently never talked to my grandfather about the war until after my grandfather came back from WW2. Two men that really set an example of sacrifice and hard work for me to follow.

The tank scene and Paul seeing his friend getting burned alived still haunts me. I couldn’t imagine the horrors these men had to face. So sad a generation of boys had to kill each other over meters of land with no clear objectives other than to completely wipe out each other. I truly believe this film captures the brutality of the war. My great great grandfather who was a sapper died soon after a war likely because of fumes and such he inhaled. His brother however was less fortunate and experienced the most common death of the war- being blown to bits by artillery. On inspection of his marker at the war memorial, he is buried particularly close to 2 others. We found out that the graves that are closer together are mass graves since they couldn’t figure out who’s dismemberments were who’s and thus laid them to rest together. Considering half of the 8 million casualties were due to artillery it’s a gruesome image to think of all those limbs and bits that were scattered around the battle field.
