Насколько я знаю, самый близкий к армянскому из других ИЕ языков это греческий. Понимаете ли вы его хоть немного?
edocredo
edocredo 4 ай бұрын
@Alex Storm Древняя Греция оказала огромное культурное влияние на весь античный мир, на каком-то базовом уровне терминов из медицины или философии - да, понимаем. Также как и люди в России) а вот чтобы на бытовом языке поговорить - это большой вопрос. С греками доводилось общаться, но на русском либо английском.
Alex Storm
Alex Storm 4 ай бұрын
@edocredo С одной стороны ваш язык относится к ИЕ семье языков, а с другой, выделяется в ней в особую ветвь. То есть по сути у армянского языка нет родственников среди других ИЕ народов, он уникален. В принципе, так же как и греческий, или албанский.

I also speak no slavic languages. What I find strange is that I am mostly unable to distinguish slavic languages from each other simply by hearing them spoken. I could probably pick out Russian from the others. But I still sometimes hear Belarussian or Ukrainian and mistake it for Russian. As for the West and South Slavic languages, I'm hopeless. And yet there are other language families where I can hear the differences far more easily. Yes certainly in the Germanic and Romance language families (which contain languages I do speak), but also the Uralic, Sinitic, Semitic language families. I also feel fairly certain I could distinguish most of the Celtic languages from each other (at least Welsh, Irish and Breton.) Maybe this is similar a matter of exposure. After all there are other language families which completely baffle me - Bantu languages, Dravidian languages, practially all Native American languages ...
Jhon Smith
Jhon Smith 2 ай бұрын
@EMS It is matter of practice. Some languages like Belorusian and Russian, Serbian, Croatian and Bosna has small difference and can not distinguish at all.

Non-Slavic speaker here. As a Hungarian Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian sounds a bit different than the others. My favourites are Serbian and Croatian but I think they are quite the same (no offence). My kids learn Slovak in school (I thought it'd be good for them if they learn a Slavic language at least. They didn't like this idea... :P) So I'm a bit familiar with Slovak and I have to say it seems and sounds to me the easiest to learn as a Hungarian. And good for you having such a huge language family. (y)

Bosnian is also the same as Serbian and Croatian. After all they fall into 1 cathegory "Serbo-Croatian" even if many people on the Balkans dislike that term so much and Montenegrin if you count that as well too.

@MeduZsa Zsa American, British and Australian English aren't 100% the same language but still classified as the same language but different dialects and accents of the same language. By this logic Austrian, Swiss German are the same German, spoken as German even if clearly all German dialects are like different languages. If Austrian and Swiss German can be classified as German so why Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin can't? It's just Balkan politics.
MeduZsa Zsa
MeduZsa Zsa 7 ай бұрын
@HeroManNick132 it's not about accents and dialects 🤦🤦 Every language has many dialects, croatian has many dialects, serbian too. But it's not about dialect, it's about grammar! It's just different at many points! Grammar was not made by dialect, but by norms and rules! When someone from Serbia says a participle of give, marry, comment .... it doesn't mean anything to me or any Croat, or serbian futures tense , it's really meaningless in croatian! Of course we know what it means, because the root of the verb is the same, but the root of 99% of verbs are same or similar in all slavic languages, so are all slavic languages the same langauge? Of course not, because each nation added their own prefixes and suffixes to root of the verb and verbs became different! So same with croatian and serbian! We understand what they want to say out of context, but we would also understand the polish or czechian or russian verb tense in the same way (out of context!) So it's really not about dialects, you can't say : "It's the same langauge, just Croats say ije and Serbs e" because people from Croatian region of Zagorje also speak with e, so do then people from Zagorje speak serbian? Of course not, because they are using croatian grammar, form of tenses and sentence structure! It's also not politics, because serbo-croatian DIDN'T EXIST at any point in time! Serbo-croatian was just made during the Yugoslavia because there was supposed to be the one official language! But through history croatian and serbian were always seperated and were developing seperately and on their own! They were not crossing each other at any point in time!

Catching one or two familiar words here and there and try to piece is together, but no, could not =))))

I am Russian, and the easiest for me to understand were, of course, Belarusian and Ukrainian, the next would be Bulgarian, then Polish and, perhaps, Slovenian. The rest were about the same: some words, occasionally phrases. It would be cool to hear the same text though in different languages :). On a separate note, I had no idea that Bosnian sounds a lot like Latvian. So beautiful! Great video! Beautiful languages. I wish politics didn’t meddle and turn our people against each other…

As a Slovak, I understand 100% Czech (our brothers) 95-99% Polish. I live in the UK where you learn Polish before English. I understood around 80% Polish before moving to UK. Also, Polish language is always easy to spot because it is the only Slavic language using letter W in common words. This letter does not exist in Slovak/Czech and we only use it for foreign words. I haven't seen the letter W being used in other Slavic languages other than Polish but correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to know 80% Russian and Serbian 60% Bosnian and Croatian 40% Belarusian 20% Slovenian, Ukrainian (I grew up 20km from Ukrainian border) and Bulgarian 10% North Macedonian BUT I think it really depends on what they are talking about. Some subjects are more difficult to talk about/understand than others which sometimes misleads into thinking that you understand the language but in reality you might be lost when they start talking about something else. I grew up close to Ukrainian border and I usually understand what Ukrainians are saying (50 - 60%) when I meet them in person but in this video, I understood very little so it really depends on the subject.

It's interesting how you understand Serbian more than Croatian, Bosnian and Ukrainian... Do you know how to read Cyrillic?
Vladimir
Vladimir 2 ай бұрын
@HeroManNick132 I can't read Cyrillic, they don't teach this in Slovakia unless you study one of the languages that uses Cyrillic (Azbuka). Serbian is easier for me to understand than the others. It is mostly because of the way Serbs pronounce words + their accent is closer to Slovak which makes it easier to understand. There is also a large Slovak community living in Serbia so our nations are pretty close, definitely closer than Croatia, Bosnia or Ukraine
HeroManNick132
HeroManNick132 2 ай бұрын
@Vladimir ''Azbuka'' literally means alphabet. Alphabet comes from the Greek first 2 letters - ''alpha'' and ''beta,'' while the Cyrillic one is from the Glagolic script ''az'' and ''buki'' while Cyrillic alphabet is ''kirlica'' The unique thing about Bulgarian is for ''I'' it's the only one who kept ''az'' while others go for ''jas/jaz/ja'' (even though in some dialects we also can use it like that but mostly ''ja'' is used as ''hers'' nowadays.) Also learning it it's not that hard and definitelly doesn't have as much as letters as modern day Slovak alphabet. 😂Even though the full one contains like 50 letters.

As a Pole these languages are for me: Russian --- I can hear some similar words, but I think that I wouldn't understand very much. Belarusian, Ukrainian --- It sounds more similar to Polish than Russian and it's slower and perhaps easier to understand. Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, North Macedonian --- Sounds smoother than East Slavic languages, but I couldn't understand any word. Slovenian --- For some reason I understood more words than the other South Slavic languages. Bulgarian --- It sounds more like Russian, but it's slower and I understood a bit more. Czech --- She said that very fast, but many words are similar to Polish. Slovak - Czech, but slower. Polish - POLSKA GUROM Anyways, greetings and respect from Polska, to all Slavic brothers.

I am Russian. For me, Polish is very similar to Czech, not Ukrainian. In Polish and Czech you like to say "psh", "pshe", "shh", "szcz". Because of this, in Russia, the Poles got the nickname "pshek" .. I even remembered a funny anecdote: A Pole comes up to a snake and says: - pshe shh psh psh. And the snake answers: - shh, shh, psh. Hahaha. I hope you don't get offended by this. This is just for fun and is not intended to offend the Polish

The alphabet of a particular country is of great importance: some countries use Cyrillic, some Latin. Perhaps the languages using the Latin alphabet are more understandable to you. And a set of Cyrillic letters are perceived by you as hieroglyphs. For comparison, the same text is below, but in my native Russian. Имеет большое значение алфавит конкретной страны: часть стран использует кириллицу, часть латиницу. Возможно, языки, использующие латиницу вам больше понятны. А набор букв на кириллице воспринимаются вами как иероглифы. Для сравнения, ниже тот же текст, но на моём родном русском языке.

As an English only speaker, I find there is very little difference in casually listening to them. If any one of these persons came up to me in the street, I would never be able to tell which language they were speaking. If all these people were speaking the same phrases it might be a little clearer, but they are so rapid fire it's impossible to tell one from the other. English is a language that is spoken ant a slower cadence. Interestingly, my father in law was a mix of Russian, Ukrainian, Polish and German and spoke all four languages, none of which my wife speaks, her mother was French, she doesn't speak French either.

Like classical composers with each of their own style of arranging the different 'sounds', scales, chords... I can understand how these different peoples are both very far removed cousins, but can also misunderstand each other deeply. And they formed each sound to their own purposes, which is practical, but causes the root language to diverge into these different beautiful modulations.

As a Bulgarian, I can say that I understand Russian 100% because I studied it for 5 years - in Bulgaria it was a compulsory subject in school from the third to the eighth grade. Also, many Russian films were broadcast on TV, and there were Russian books in every bookstore. And historically, Bulgaria and Russia have been very closely connected since the early Middle Ages. Even today, many Bulgarians have the Russian names Nikolay, Sergey, Aleksey.

I’m from Scotland and speak Scottish Gaelic, which is one of the minority languages in Europe. It is similar to Irish and Welsh and doesn’t really have any connection to English. In fact it’s a very different language. But like the Slav people, I can understand a lot of what Irish are saying, but their accent sounds strange and it’s not so gutteral like our language, with the Welsh I can understand some words

I like to watch these kinds of videos to see how well I understand languages within the same language group. As a Russian speaker I understood: 100% Russian (duhh) ~80-90% Belarusian (some unfamiliar words but I understand what's going on) ~20% Serbian (uhh something about a museum and something about decorative techniques!?) ~50-60% Ukranian (I understand most expressions but I fail to understand the important parts of the conversation. People will send what? In his opinion we should try different instruments? Huh?) ~15% Croatian (Only understood a few word here and there, including the number 150000, if it even was that...) ~30-40% Bulgarian (A bunch of familiar words but couldn't really understand the context, something about some controversial construction project during tourist season?) ~40% Slovenian (Something about delivery services like DHL) ~5% Bosnian (Information 👍) ~50% (I believe she's talking about a particular minister? Something about record low unemployment, something about the european parliament, something about television appearance, the possibility to meet someone in person and she was shocked by something) ~10% (I can't understand anything besides words like hygiene and special team, maybe the word punishment was there too?) ~50-60% Slovak (This one really surprised me. Its about someone called Bestopanov (?) who was running a marathon within the north pole circle for 112 minutes. I don't really understand how Mount Everest comes into play here since it's not in the north pole circle...) ~20% Macedonian (Something about elections and government?) Edit: reduced Slovak because I misunderstood "bes topanok" and thought it was a name.

@LeireX They were talking about Wim Hof and his coming up visit in Slovakia. 10 years ago he went up to the Mount Everest wearing only shorts, than he run a half marathon above the Arctic Circle barefoot and wearing shorts too, and another time he run a full marathon in the Namibia Desert without drinking. That was not enough and he was also 112 minutes in container full of ice, which is unbelievable :) That was what they were talking about :)

Your understanding of the Polish example is really good. Just one minor correction: the other minister in question (as there's talk of two different ministers in that bit, first named Borys-Szopa and the other Rafalska) did not meet anybody in person but revealed something to another politician (named Brudziński) in a kind of private conversation which was shown on a TV news; there's no specific talk of meeting someone in person, in any case. Basically, this bit is a great example of the tripe we've been fed by the so called "Polish" politicians and media. The second part is pure gold, check this: so, that Rafalska had successfully run for the European Parliament although she "wasn't supposed to get in but stay [in her position as a minister] and just score well [in the European Parliament elections; seriously, that broad said "zrobić dobry wynik" like it was some sport]"; Rafalska told Brudziński she was shocked she'd gotten in because she had had it all planned out but then "all her life plans came unstuck". What the heck ever?!

I am Polish and I understand Slovak best. Czech and Belarusian are also intelligible to some extent, but both in a completely different way. For Poles, Czech and Slovak sounds super cute ♥ Belarusian sounds classy 🙂 and Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian are sexy, maybe because they remind me of the Portuguese language in some way :)

Are you sure about Czech and Slovak sounding super cute to us? Because I've never come across such statement in real life, granted this is hardly ever a conversation topic; I've only heard "hilarious" when it's rarely come up and I second that notion. "Śmieszny, dziwny i niepoważny" is my assessment. One's got to give it to them they do some funny comedies and the weird language fits the weird (yet amusing) sense of humour to a tee.

Hearing Slovenian compared to other south slavic languages, you can really hear the influence of both German and Italian in they way they pronounce their words, considering most of their history was under both spheres of influence (though of course mostly German with the Habsburgs)

The only pattern I can distinguish is that the further to the East you go the harder sounds tend to dominate what you hear as a non-Slavic language speaker and that further to the west the languages are a bit softer on the ear.
