Funnily enough I’d argue with hindsight calling Arizona then probably wasn’t the right decision. The remaining votes had to be 65% for Trump and ended up being something like 63% for him. I know hindsight is 20:20, but considering how it ended up with Biden winning by 0.3 points… they could have very easily been wrong.

The Fox Arizona call was infamously bad. They called it way before any other news stations because they didn’t realize that mail-ins actually do favor republicans in Arizona. So the Trump campaign thinking they could get 65 percent of those votes was wrong, but not out of the realm of possibility. It went to Biden by a .3 margin, 11 thousand votes. In raw votes it was closer than Georgia.

Fox’s call turned out to be accurate, but to be fair it was kind of a premature call at the time. I live in AZ and it is a big mail in voting state. Even Republicans here have traditionally voted by mail over the years. The main in votes that had yet to be counted skewed heavily in Trump’s favor. Biden had 200k vote lead and in the end it narrowed down to about 10k. Most unbiased elections analysts agreed that it was probably best to leave it in the too close to call column for at least a few days.

Most people agree, but the EC system benefits the political parties enough that neither would want to give it up. It would be logistically and strategically difficult to run a campaign based on nationwide popular vote in such a massive country. The EC system means they only have to focus on a few swing states, which makes their campaigning process much simpler.

A pretty interesting moment at 38:50. The election desk guy kinda scoffs at the Trump campaigns statement saying they think there are still 1 million votes left uncounted in Arizona, and he thinks it is not going to be that much. In the end the Trump campaign was kinda right! There were 900k votes left and Trump only ended up losing by 11k. Fox News election night desk has a good track record, so not trying to throw shade at them. It surprised a lot of people how high turnout was in 2020 and I think if they knew there were still 900k votes out there they probably wouldn't have called the state that early.

Popular vote just determines the raw votes. The US has the electoral college which makes the states vote, not the people. In this case, a candidate has to win 50% of the population in a state to get all of the electoral votes. This can help and hurt both parties. The Dems control California, despite a large GOP presence in the north of the state. The GOP has Texas, despite of heavy Dem pressure in the big cities.

it's not completely irrelevant but the popular vote option is not always the best alternative. The issue is there's a lot of people out there that simply doesn't who their truly voting for nor what their talking about. I've seen a lot of individual interviews when their asked the simple question who their voting for and why. You'd be surprised how many doesn't provide just a simple answer and evidence to back up their claim.

This was perhaps one of the most underwhelming victories in recent U.S. politics. Only 43 000 votes ended up deciding the election, which is was surprising considering how deeply unpopular Trump supposedly was. Even in 2016 Trump won by 80 000 votes. I don't think this was even close to being a landslide victory for Biden. Yes, every election is close when you analyse it that way, but it was especially close considering Biden was up consistently in the national polls by 7-10 points.
