April was already 37 when this came out. For years she was said as being born in 1936 but in reality it was 1929. R.I.P. So sad that mainstream radio leaves off gems like this and just keeps playing the same old stuff. These lesser hits (reached #26) often help recall memories more clearer.

Unfortunately, this was when radio wouldn't play anything with a hint of an association with drugs. Still, this is probably the best of the wall of sound influenced songs that came out that year. BTW, it's a shame April had to lie about her age. Then again this was in the age of when your career was perceived to be over once you hit thirty. Also, it was a unique dynamic with her an Nino. In most brother/sister duos the brother is the senior partner and the sister is the junior. Here is was the reverse with April being older.
@muffs55mercury61
@muffs55mercury61 5 ай бұрын
@@Sargebri Yes what you're saying is all true. April sure didn't look her age back then. The age thing in show biz really sux. I think that's why early rock and roller Bill Haley declined rapidly around 1957 as he was already 32 (yet he remained popular in Europe and Australia for the rest of his life.) By 1968 the part about drugs also had changed. For example there was "Journey To the Center Of The Mind"? That was a turbulent year and almost anything went by then.
@Sargebri

@@muffs55mercury61 yup. A lot of female singers in that era were in their teens to early 20's. If it came out that she was in her mid-30's during that time it would have probably meant curtains for her and Nino.

As a radio personality from this era that loves this song and played it passionately back then, I've got to think it was the double entendre drug lyrics that shot it down. One of the very best, but we were all so careful not to play a song that even remotely portrayed drug use positively. April Stevens was SO gorgeous, and Nino's singing and producing for White Whale Records, (home of the Turtles) was exquisite. And let's hear it for Lloyd Thaxton for bringing them on his TV show. Should have been a HUGE hit.

Something tells me that the title may have had something to do with it not becoming video. Of course, this was just as America's drug paranoia began and anything that radio programmers might have thought had even the most remote connection to drugs had the kibosh put on it. No matter what though, this is still one hauntingly beautiful song.

TRhis was Nino & April's last Top 40 hit, reaching #26 over an eight week run in September-October 1966. And yes indeed, it should have gone a LOT higher.) Their first of 20 chart hits (either collectively or as solo artists) was April's "I'm In Love Again" in 1951; the last Nino's almost unbeliebably catchy "Sister James" in 1973. Nino (real name Antonio) was born in 1935, April (real name Carol) in 1936; their real family name is Lo Tempio.

I'm thinking airplay was restricted because the lyric "Strung out" We know how restrictive radio and television could be back then on any controversial, subtle "drug" reference lyric. Many artists have talked about that same scenario with many of their songs. Although by today's standard it would be no issue. Great song and arrangements. Some artists were able to get around it, but some not.

I now remember why I had a crush on Nino! What a beautiful song, beautfully sung and beautifully arranged. I was around 9 when this record came out, and I am proud to say I still have the 45.

clip for "all strung out" is so moving, i seem to watch it everyday . it pulls you in emotionally. i do feel the current generation needs to know about this song AND nino & april. i am hoping that this song will one day be used in a current romantic movie. with this, i hope the song gets rediscovered, like the righteous bros did with "unchained melody" in the film "ghost".or picture william holden and kim novak doing that smoldering slow dance in the film "picnic" to "all strung out".

Yes folks I am now 59 and I have a White Whale promo copy of this royal gem.They do not make great stuff like this anymore.The arrangement and orchestration is still as haunting as ever back in 66.Yes the wall of sound style here prevails. This is one you can hear on Sirius 60's on 6 as the lousy oldies stations today do not go deep enough in their programmed music vaults to play the real sixties sounds like this one.One of the best singles White Whale records ever released.Still sounds great!!

I wish never to see such a cool looking lady ever to grow old. I shed a tear even the thought of April Stevens losing her sexy voice & charms. She's so right on the money like "Venus De Milo". Forever young April.

Jos van der Gun. Never heard of them until tonight. Heard their song "Deep Purple Dreams" but never interested enough to see who sang it. Certainly not the best sister/brother duo. That spot is held by the Carpenter's....hands down.

I was at first amazed that they weren't like Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell or Steve & Eydie; rather the good friends or wife and husband, they were brother and sister, but the songs worked for them, and looking back, none of them were even vaguely incestuous about them.

Happy birthday to one of the great voices of the 50's and 60's, (and later), April Stevens. I just read her autobiography and can't believe it's #88. My first celebrity 'crush' when I was about 9 to 11, in the mid 60's. Have a wonderful one!

I think the other fans here capture my sentiments perfectly. One of the most exquisite wall-of-sound recordings ever made. It's one of those songs that sound like they were written, sung and recorded in Heaven! Almost a religious feeling when I hear this, a kind of indescribable ecstasy overtakes me.

Classic, timeless and eternal song. Sheer perfection! You can tell that this is a kinescope, because you can tell they filmed directly from a "roundie" television screen. Look in the corners and see what I mean. I thought by 1966, video was widespread. No matter, this is Nino's and April's best song. Period!

This song is probably one of the classic Spector style songs of that era. We, FIVE STEPS BEYOND (UK), heard this song back in '66 and put it into our repertoire immediately. I have a poor live recording of it as it was with one badly placed microphone and tape machine. Great song and great male/female duo of the time. Thanks guys.

@louisyoung1 This one of "All Strung Out" (as well as a separate video of "I Can't Go On Livin' from the same show) was graciously provided to us by Lloyd Thaxton's widow, Barbara. As far as we know, this is the only color performance around, other than a clip from the "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" of Nino & April doing "Mr. Businessman." Unfortunately, we have contractually obligated not to publish this clip. Again, many thanks for your comments, and regards from Nino and April.

Wow, could these two have looked any more gorgeous, or sounded any better than they do here? I'm so thankful for You Tube, to bring back such magic and talent as Nino and April. And their cover of Deep Purple is the best there is. The arrangement is so unique. I pay close attention to lyrics and arrangements, which includes these wonderful voices and harmonies, as instruments. Thank you for posting this, JimC.

Still one of my all-time favorite songs. I still have the White Wale single. Bones and the Wrecking Crew did a great job as always. It definitely had Phil's 'Wall Of Sound' feel to it. Nino is one of the few members ( Glen Campbell is the big exception) of the Wrecking Crew to have much vocal sucess. One of the best sax session player of his era.

From my hometown of Niagara Falls, NY. Along with another Falls native, the legendary Tommy Tedesco, they really made an impact in the 60s. This is hands down their greatest record and one of the best records of 1966.

In her biography Darlene Love implies that Nino Tempo had as much to do with the Phil Spector sound as Phil Spector, and Phil would use Ninos ideas. I have a Nino Tempo 12 inch fromthe 80s called "hooked on young stuff", great track probably from the L.P. BearZest mentions.
