@@yarygork2334 The truth is, there are other artists in the Motown stable who had longer and more enduring success and are more readily remembered than Levi Stubbs. The Four Tops did not have many hits after their string of hits in the 60s. Other Motown figures and groups went on to continued success: Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye, among others. The Tops kept performing, but they didn't have huge hits in the 70s and 80s like the other acts did. This is why I say Levi Stubbs was and is underappreciated. He was influential in ways many may not consider. Listen to young Michael Jackson with the Jackson 5, for example. His soulful emphasis echos Stubbs own Gospel influenced declaration; at times, he sounded like a mini Levi. Many never noticed that because Jackson was so associated with Diana Ross and even James Brown.

What a greatness, what a class, what an incredible group they were! It is a cliché and therefore absolutely true in every sense: they don't make music like this anymore in these harsh en shredded times. (Four years later, 2023) the brilliance of this vocal group is as dazzling as ever. Their music, despite the sometimes gloomy lyrics, gives comfort and hope. That there are also people who create true art and beauty is a thought that brings light.
