They kept telling you Tai was tough so that when Tai killed himself after Locust torture you'd understand how bad it was. It was a set up in the story to make sure none of the people playing the game thought that Dom was wrong to euthanise Maria after she went through years of it.

Reading up on his story, I question what the fuck kind of torture they put Tai through since he already went through an immense amount of shit way before E-day. This dude was one tough son of a bitch, so his end boggles my mind and breaks my heart.

The locust would capture cog soldiers and "process" them. This means they would torture the cog soldiers by whipping them with metal, hanging them on hooks, and scarring them mentally and physically. Skorge captured Tai and sent him to process with other soldiers.
