We don't know if they were really 4th since they only revealed averages, not points in 2013. They might have been lower by points. I'm also convinced that Serbia was higher than 12th (televoting) and 15th (juries) since I can't imagine how they would come 11th with those placements.

I really feel for Poland 2019 and Montenegro 2013. The problem with juries is that they´re too small (just 5 people) and the professionals in them each overvalue their own field of expertise. A choreographer is not going to give any points to a non-dancing group no matter how good the song is, and a guitar player is never going to give points to a techno-song. I also think that industry professionals prefer to vote for Western acts, because they feel they would look unsophisticated if they voted for something East-European, especially if it's ethnic and traditional (their voting records are public). In 2021 we can already see that almost all countries have sent in modern Sweden-type songs, as they've always been punished when they tried to represent their own culture (case in point: Go_A also got a low jury score)

I disagree with that, and I think you’re painting a picture of the jury that isn’t true. The juries mostly vote for the “safer” choices, yes, but to say that it’s because “they would look unsophisticated if they voted for something East-European” is ridiculous. Look at Denmark this year, for instance. They came up with something unique, something creative - and they got screwed by the jury as well (they finished 7th among the televoters in the semi-final). In fact, I noticed that many of the western juries gave Russia’s song points this year. The issue with the jury is real, but you’re twisting the situation into something that simply can’t be reflected in reality.

In fact, you could point out that Azerbaijan, Ukraine and Russia have all won the contest recently, so obviously it´s more true that safe entries do better with juries than original ones. But this is so widely understood that instead I wanted to make my point that if Denmark and Albania were to send in the same act of the same quality, juries would vote for Denmark. Russia is not really a strong counter example, since it obviously has a sophisticated music industry due its size, so that jurists would like to associate themselves with it.

@@robertdegroot8302 what makes you say that? Bloc voting is more likely to happen with the juries than the televoters. Russia’s jury gave 12 points to Moldova this year, Azerbaijan gave 12 points to Russia if I recall correctly. Music taste is different in different parts of Europe...

Sometimes these disparities are caused by a dreadful performance in the jury gala. I wish "professional" juries voted on the public gala. There are no longer technical difficulties which could prevent this from happening.

The Televote gave often more attention to creative & not generic songs as the Jurys, witch is very unfortuned. They also voted way more often for songs in native language. Especially in 2013 where Bulgaria, Switzerland & Montenegro would have qualified with 100 % televoting. These three songs would way more interesting qualifiers, than other songs that made it that year.

You all know that juries do NOT vote on the performance broadcast for the public, don't you? An artist can kill it at the public gala and murder it at the jury gala. Not sure if this was the case. Blackbird was sadly one of my favourite entries that year.

I found it surprising more qualifiers were killed by the televote than the jury. I can't tell if it's because the jury kept lifting bad entries that the televote rightly shut down, or if it was because we overestimated how much the juries were destroying entries. Like yes, they may have destroyed our favorite entry, but it seems they aren't actually destroying too many. The televote seems to be more one sided too. Like I haven't looked at the split results yet for each year, but I would reckon that jury points seem to be somewhat evenly distributed. Televote points, however, could be lopsided, with the top 3 getting all of the 12s, 10s, and 8s while everyone else is left scrambling for the remaining points. Jury points are much more spread out because, in general, juries are much more cautious. It seems the televote is more unstable than we thought.

Plus the televote is always bias. Sometimes the stage does matter for some songs. Sometimes doesnt matter. Look ate Moldova this year. Stage was meh, the performance was meh, and the only redeem quality is the final note. but still it was so cover with back vocals, we barelly listen her own voice. But once the televote enjoy the song, it give more higher points. And if we compare with other songs that the vocals were good, stage was decente to good, but televote doesnt like the song, it gives less points. Austria was one of those examples. So yes, eurovision does need the jury. Sure the jury sometimes is questionable, but at least it tries to balance the things a little.
