Things I know about but didn't include in the video. 1: Hooktail is exclusively referred to with female pronouns, in the original game she was referred to with masculine or none descriptive pronouns until the eventual reveal by Gloomtail that she was female and that seems to be entirely removed. 2: Speaking of Hooktail, one of their lines is slightly changed, not the one you think but still related but I just didn't want to end my video on such a note. Update: New Japanese footage has released, the Goomba scene is changed in Japan too. It doesn't outright change the scene like this new localized script does but it does alter it a fair bit.

For everyone who is wondering about the goomba dialogue, here is the original Japanese script translated to English: "Hey, I see you got a cutie with you." "How about playing with us cutie?" "Yeah, you can do better than those 2 fogies." Christinu's reply is, "Wow, you are really forthright. I HATE that type of man. Buzz off." The Goombas say, "Huh. You're really stuck up. You're gonna wish you hadn't said that." So, yeah this particular change was not made for accuracy to the original script.

But rather worlds that feel real with both lightness and darkness. To each their own. Also In Animal Crossing the whole point is that these mean people eventually become your friends after you get to know them and get over your differences.

Instead of burying your head in the sand, demanding to not encounter any negativity in fictional media.. Doesn't sound healthy to me anyway. Thanks for the comparison video! It’ll be interesting to see how much dialogue has changed across the entire remake vs the original once we get our hands on it, especially given just how much has changed as shown in just the the preview footage. While it isn’t dialogue, I’m actually really surprised they didn’t replace the noose with something else. Surprisingly, the rope of the noose is even animated, although it could’ve been like that in the original game too.

I'm happy people are getting to play this game for the first time, but i just wish they didn't take away some of the dialogue from the original. The Goombas are a example. It shows Goombells sticking up for herself, vs just sticking up for Mario. I loved that aspect of her character because it shows she won't put up with creeps. Also, its ROGUEPORT. Why wouldn't there be creeps? Plus, Koops my boy. The original had him saying what he had to say even if Mario said no. Now its just him waiting there until Mario showed up. You can very easily change the meaning of dialogue if you change some words. A lot of people may not care, but you can change someone's characterization very easily, and not always for the better.

I don't think anyone has pointed this out yet, but based on 4:52, it seems like they added an extra segment to the battle theme, making it longer. this is just like what the mario RPG and superstar saga remakes did. that's so cool! it's nice that the battle theme is no longer a 30 second loop anymore; that'll make it way less repetitive.

In some regards it is made to more closely resemble the Japanese script. As far as my knowledge goes everything presented in this video is either entire new scenes exclusive to the remake in general, or "censorship". The most notable scene is the Goomba Trio's dialogue, which in the original game was more or less a direct translation of the Japanese script and is now an original interaction.

Ok I know the early 2000s was an edgy time for games...but changing dialogue that was from an older game is a problem. Especially since the dialogue is what makes the characters iconic in the original game. I get it, if I were to look at it now I wouldn't give the original game an E rating like it was before. At least an E10+ or even low T with the snarky edgy dialogue especially about the topic of emotional abuse later. I get it, make it E rated approval to nowadays, if you make anything remotely edgy now it can get hit with the rating, but this does take away from what the original game had. Charm.

I guess maybe they think the dialogue in that can be influenced badly in the newer generation. But honestly, I don't see the problem. It teaches kids about heavy topics such as death and abuse. Plus, Rogueport is full of people doing crazy things like mugging and freaking mafia stuff with Don Pianta To me, the game is a full on lesson. There are bad people and crazy shit happens in the world. As much as I hate to say it, it's probably one of the most realistic Mario games to exist. And Mario ain't realistic at all. Heck even the stuff from the OG game is still not even that bad.

It feels like most of the dialogue was changed to be more... accommodating? There was nothing wrong with letting the catcalling goombas catcall and be assholes when their punishment is that we kill them anyway. Now we're beating up on the homeless and it feels wrong. Hooktail being referred to as a female also caught my eye. In the original Gloomtail revealing she was a chick the whole time caught me off guard and was pretty funny. There's also a dialogue change with Luigi and his bomb-omb partner. Original has him stay with Luigi for the sole purpose of never letting Luigi wear a wedding dress ever again no matter how unlikely that'd happen because the sight of it was so horrifying to him. Now it's him making sure Luigi doesn't... stumble around and trip into people whilst wearing one. Idk man it just seems like most of the dialogue they changed ended up being stale in order to not offend anyone.

I think it says a lot about society where defending yourself against a gang of hooligans who jump you for no reason feels wrong unless they catcall you first in which case it's just desert. I'd also think the revision to the Luigi story makes more sense since every story involves him ultimately saving the day while still making a heap of mistakes along the way and in the original version of that scene it's literally just the Bob Omb not liking Luigi being in a dress and especially now that we live in a world where Luigi wearing dresses is a widespread joke among the entire series it doesn't really stand out at all. Now there's actually something Luigi did wrong and the picture of him in said dress bumbling around in heels is a much more striking visual then, something we just have now.

When (or if) you do make a chapter two and so forth version of this, I literally ANTICIPATE that first scene with Bowser being shown. Paper Mario TTYD was my literal childhood. I always looked forward to playing the emulation we had of it. And to me, one of the most memorable scenes was Bowser yelling at Kammy Koopa. From what I can remember/details aside, Kammy mentions Petalburg to Bowser (Either about the Crystal Stars or Peach-) and somehow she mentions about how it would be a great place for a picnic. Then I'm pretty sure Bowser gets one of those answer choices, one in which he considers the picnic. After he snaps out of his picnic daydreaming, he yells "AIRHEAD!!!" at Kammy. This always amused me. Bowser is already entertaining enough, but I just really liked that line. And of course I imagined Kammy Koopa as an Airhead candy piece ontop of a broom. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that line. But now, as shown in the trailer. They changed it to "LUNKHEAD!!!" Okay.. What does that even mean? I'm literally not familiar with that word. I know what Airhead means, as an expression. But Lunkhead? Where the heck did they find That-- It's much less amusing and entertaining in my opinion and I truly don't see why on Earth they would change the line. As far as I'm concerned, calling someone and Airhead makes much more sense than calling them a Lunkhead. I don't know if just basically nobody feels the same way as me, or if anyone even realized. But I haven't seen anyone mention it or highlight it in any discussions. I get it's not that big of a deal to most. But this is like one of the only lines I've ever memorized from TTYD, because I enjoyed seeing/reading it.

When the full game releases I do plan on making videos for each chapter complete with the intermissions. As for Airhead, vs Lunkhead they pretty much mean the exact same thing. Idk where you were either literally everyone was talking about the change to lunkhead when the trailer came out. I don't know how you can say calling someone an airhead makes much more sense if you don't even know what lunk head means in the first place. It's actually a far more adequate word in the scene, as Airhead is typically not a serious insult and I know Bowser is a kooky guy but he was definitely trying to insult her with the word.

this has me worried about how the dialogue involving vivian may have changed. I liked how the original didn't really focus on it at all, because that wasn't what made her an amazing character. the hooktail gender not being a secret is a damn shame, that reveal from gloomtail made me pause and go "wait...hooktail's a girl? that likes feet? the hell?" like it legit stunned me. also the renaming of Shadow Sirens to The Three Shadows. like...why? it worked, they're all girls, pretty sure vivian counts as a siren, just saying. honestly it just feels like they're removing this stuff to be closer to what the japanese version said, however, the script for both english and japanese was written at the same time! Bedlam isn't accepting of it so doesn't refer to Vivian as a siren because Sirens are female. Im looking the comments and I think people dont understand the importance of the dialogues compared to the gamecube version. I hope the story still be funny despite of the watered down versions of dialogues. Rogue port is suppose to be a town full of thieves and gangs. When you talked to the NPCs you can understand the kind of struggles they are going through because of the type of conditions they are living in. Enemies also acted acording to the enviroment they are surrounded which in the case of the goombas, makes you understand the dirt of the enviroment rogue port is. Water down the dialogue is like cleaning what is suppose to be feeling dirty. That is what made special the PMttyd on gamecube. I hope those little changes doesnt affect the overall experience with the game as the game itself is a masterpiece and would be a shame for the storytelling experience felt watered down because of those dialogues changes.

I do prefer the original to an extent but the remake keeps the castle in shoot while the characters talk about it which is nice to set that up as the ultimate goal of the chapter since you spend so much of the chapter doing random nonsense not directly related to it.

"Airhead" might simply have been changed since it'd fit better directed at a dimwitted character, which Goombella isn't. I'd say the new version is an improvement in that regard (although "good girl" reads a little better than "good student" I think). Dunno about "lunatic" though. No one's going to be modding in the original dialogue either. Firstly Switch modding is pretty limited, anyone with the capabilities to do as such have better projects to be putting their mind to. Secondly, this remake doesn't just edit dialogue it completely revamps scenes, anyone would want to make a dialogue patch would be instantly dishearten by how scuffed it would have to be. Thirdly, majority of the people who actually care about the game enough to mod it, wouldn't bother, not only do they not care about minor dialogue changes, but there are plenty of dialogue changes that were edited to be more in line with the original Japanese script something those types of people are vastly more invested in.

Secondly, I don't think using FE as a defense is the best thing to be doing. Those games do have shoddy translations at times but those games feature content straight up not appropriate to, really any audience and yet those people seem very keen on keeping them. I'm not usually one to judge but that part of the fandom are just straight up freaks and I sure hope similar people don't exist in this community. But even then that was done as what was put in it's place made the game just completely worse off. The translation mod does make an entirely different product at the end of the day. That is simply not the case here, your experience is not forever tainted from sentences where one word got replaced with a slightly less effective word. And as I mentioned before, so many scenes are entirely reworked a retranslation patch would have to be so barebones it would defeat the point of the project in the first place.

The goomba dialogue when you first enter the sewers wouldn't have been a problem if the chang ehad been the original instance. Instead, we have some gung-ho idiots itching for a fight for no reason versus thugs who cat call a girl and get you ready to trounce them for the lady's honor. It's a complete DEI-enforced downgrade on the story. And if that's what they're doing in small parts, it makes me fearful of what else they've changed.

Man people just love to make stuff up to suit their needs and then wonder why stuff like this gets changed. Because apparently sexually assaulting a stranger is A-Ok perfectly normal thing I mean it is a dingy city of course but oh no the Goombas are itching for a fight for no reason how unrealistic and undignified these hooligans are now. Hell I would even argue the new dialogue gives a higher justification for a brawl, in the original Goombelle was completely unaffected by their comments and they only jump Mario because she was being sassy there was no "defending the lady's honor".

Tbh I dont like the new graphics, it looks like one of those super shiny roblox games with a lot of bloom, and I get that its paper mario, but everything being made out of crappy cardboard is just kinda lame to me (btw I have 0 nostalgia for this game, I played it like 3 years ago)

We do know the Shadow Sirens have been renamed to the Shadow Trio akin to their Japanese name and the one snippet of dialogue we've seen from them seems to be addressing Vivian's trans nature.

Quite a bit of "non-offensive to the everybody community" dialogue changes they made here. But not enough to ruin the spirit of the game at least, so far. Even though I wish they'd just kept everything intact and not change stuff that was never wrong to begin with. I don't really care if they decided to make Vivian the femboy that he is in the original Japanese dialogue for the remake. I'm more concerned about the "Games Journalists" who will somehow spin this change into some sort of a political statement from Nintendo or whatever for the alphabet community or "modern audiences" after the game eventually releases. When in reality, that's just how the character was originally meant to be even back in 2004...

I doubt Nintendo personally cares about any of this but ESRB ratings are far stricter then they used to be. I don't think Nintendo goes out of their way to keep their games E, plenty of their most notable titles are E10+ if not Teen, but keeping re-releases of games to the same rating does seem to be something they adhere to. I've never seen such attentive minute word replacing however, I wonder if they went overboard anywhere they saw fit just so they could keep all the truly weird stuff that really should push the game over the line.

@Whispernyan As a long-time fan for over 20 years and this being one of my favorite games of all time, no. I just have standards, and you don't TOUCH that. I just don't want to support this insane trend of taking things down that are totally normal and okay for the sake of appeasing some whiny weirdos. If that's enough to upset you, my taking issue with that, then you are the one with the problem, my friend. I guarantee I love this game more than any of you. I'd bet my life on that in fact. But this is ridiculous censorship for what is an innocent piece of dialogue. If THAT warrants censorship, I can't help but shudder at what ELSE they felt the need to change. I don't give money to DEI crap and never will. I'll always have the original game on hand. 60 fps and all.

I mean really from where I'm standing it looks far more like you care about whatever DEI is more then you do Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door. Also what do you mean "totally normal and okay". That just sounds weird. The scene wasn't supposed to be "totally normal and okay" it was supposed to be off putting. I don't think the action in real life is totally normal or okay either. The new dialogue is totally normal and okay. You can't have it both ways either you like it when media does things that aren't totally normal and okay or you don't. This game has a foot fetish dragon, fully in-tact by the way, is that also totally normal and okay I just don't get the thought process there. What isn't totally normal and okay, if they add woke stuff in it? Lastly, do you not get any sense of hypocrisy of complaining over text in a game and not buying the game over it while getting mad at companies for changing text to appeal to the masses so people don't get mad and not buy the game. @Whispernyan Why are you defending censorship and the sterilization of the script? This scene IS meaningless, yet it warranted a removal because of it being "problematic." That's the issue. It's me being told how to consume my media and how I should think about these things. That's the problem with woke stuff. It censors things that aren't actually a problem. This wasn't a problem in 2004 so what changed? Feminism and a DEI partnership with Nintendo. Evidence is pretty clear since this isn't a matter of being faithful to the original Japanese script. It was in there, too. The scene is normal, not because it's right, but because IT HAPPENS! What's the point of censoring a couple Goombas being SLIGHTLY too advancing on Goombella? It happens in real life. The whole point of the scene is to show off her sass and have Mario and her kick their butts for it. What is it about that that's wrong? Can the masses not appeal to that? You're making this a personal thing against me when I've said nothing wrong. It's more like YOU agree with their worldview and don't like me critiquing it. I doubt that's the only thing they've censored in this game. And so I don't much like the thought of playing a sterilized version of the script i fell in love with when I can always play the old one. And you assume too much. I LOVE this game way more than you ever could, and I bet I would beat you in any contest of knowledge with this game any day of the week. This game was particularly special to my growing up. I played it over at least two dozen times in my life, grabbing any and all collectible items I could find, challenge runs, several different builds, all without even using a guide for it. I lived and breathed this game for ages. So it MATTERS to me when they mess with it. I'm not gonna support messing with it for some PC pointers
