The Mama Stew or Mama's Stew is a fast paced choreography from the early 1960s. It was created by the 1955 Harvest Moon Ball champion George Sullivan for the Mama Lou Parks Dancers.
The routine was regularly performed by Mama Lu & The Parkets, which is where the name comes from. Lee Moates, George Sullivan, and Delma Nicholson of Mama Lu Parks dancers created the routine
Mama's Stew is a solo jazz dance routine that was often used as a warm-up by Whitey's Lindy Hoppers.
The name Mama Stew comes from Louise "Mama Lou" Parks was a dancer who played a crucial role in keeping Lindy Hop alive after the Savoy Ballroom closed in 1958. She began her career at the Savoy working in the coatroom and quickly became a prominent dancer at the venue. Over time, she established her professional dance company, which from 1961 to 1990 preserved the legacy of vernacular jazz dances such as the Lindy Hop. During the 60s and 70s, as popular dances began to shift away from partner dancing towards styles like The Twist, Hustle, and Disco, it was a monumental task to maintain Lindy Hop as a show dance and competitive dance.
