Despite the fact we'll probably never meet in person, and I don't know about you many things, you are my favorite luthier, yt person, bass enthusiast on the planet.

I had one of those era p bass from Japan.. it was my first bass actually and it is the one bass I wish I had to this day. They are such great basses.

So rare to find a reviewer not pretending to be unbiased and just actually flogging product. Thanks.

Really cool basses! Great video, Jake

Watched all of the episodes in one shot, one of the best KZbin show ideas I've seen. What Jake is doing is kind similar to what Josh Scott of JHS Pedals has done, featuring old (and new) pedals by manufacturers he likes without shilling for them. These are just basses that Serek digs with his insight added. It supports the ENTIRE bass community.

THIS IS WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!!! God I love Rush! Also, my guess for the three way would be Squier's spin on the OG Esquire Three-Way that basically capped the tone in one position, I don't remember what it did in the other, but that is my guess. I slept on the "EB" configuration of that Tele bass and have regretted it ever since...

The Tic Tac mode was probably made for using flat wound strings ;with a pick as was the case in the pre round wound days.

These two basses look and sound awesome! That said, I think the Squier P MIJ holds a slight edge for me.

Is the P-bass comparable to a jaguar neck on a p-bass and moving the bridge closer to the neck?

The "tick tack" bass switch on the Telecaster bass was intended to solve a very real problem: One of the biggest problems of micing a session in those days was getting a good acoustic bass sound. Entire takes were ruined because everything except the bass sounded great or vice versa. So...they began micing for a less than-optimal bass sound, concentrating on the rest of instruments instead, and the overdubbing the bass part with a 6 string electric bass to restore the attack. The T-bass, with its "old P-bass" PUP (originally designed to sound as close as possible to an upright bass) and the switch were designed to "combine" that sound, saving the time of the overdub. That's one of the reasons the T-Bass never really had mainstream success: Everyone outside of (mostly Nashville) studios just thought they were old-fashioned P-basses with a weird sounding switch position.

Amazing insight. All the details correct right up until the part where you rewrote history, like reading a fever dream AI post. The T-Bass has never existed in the format demo’d in this video, the Squire telecaster bass is a complete one off. The only ‘telecaster’ bass fender made was the 68’ reissue of the original 51 to 57 single coil p bass which had non of the switching of the squire ‘t-bass’. In fact the only fender bass back in the 60s which had a bass cut like you’re describing here is the Bass VI.

Tic Tac mode is really intended for recording parts that sitting somewhere in between the guitar and bass, thus cutting out the lows that might interfere with the actual bass part. It's not really meant for playing bass lines in a traditional sense, but essentially for playing guitar parts that may extend into bass range.

I'm glad to see Sam Rivers from Limp Bizkit get his props with that little rendition of "Rearranged". When you look past the guy with the backwards red hat, you find that band has ALOT of talent.

How much do you think a Squier P should go for? I know it's a subjective question. I've only seen one and seller is asking $999 seems like a lot but not sure what an out of production Japanese bass should go for.

@@charles. Not sure if this comment was intended as sarcastic or actual but I could imagine that tic tac mode being good for players who play distorted / fuzz kind of tones.
