Elle Fanning and Justice Smith star as teens with emotional scars become friends and go on a journey of discovery to find if life has meaning. Is this young adult novel-turned-film worth watching? Thanks for checking out my review!

In the book there are some stories that explained why Finch feels the way he does. His councelour also explains to him that he may be a bipolar person, just as his dad is, and he he should take some medicine (which he doesn´t). The book's told in first person by both Violet and Finch, so we can see how he gets in this moods without knowing exactly why he feels that way if everything is good in his life.

The book sounds good, especially with the first person narration.

From someone who is in a relationship with someone with severe depression, I can only say that each case is really different and personal, the most important thing of been with someone with strong mental health problems is to stay healthy yourself as much as possible, to take care of yourself. Also I think been with my partner has given me a deeper understanding of the meaning of the words patience and compassion and that only works for me because I keep daily on exercising to not take things personal. He is a loving and caring person and his condition doesn't make him aggressive, but tired and overwhelmed. In those moments he needs my patience and my compassion to tell him that he is free to feel the feelings he is feeling and that I believe he will feel better, that I'm here and that his not alone, sometimes he's needs time for himself, sometimes he needs a hug. He is also there for me and takes care of me. I also go to therapy my self so that I have support. I believe that this movie is unsuccessful, because she is not able to show him compassion, he is sick, sick like someone that has diabetes or another chronic illness. But one can't see it because is a problems of dopamine and serotonin production in the brain. In this movie this character might have PTHD from abuse or ADHD or bipolar disorder. I think that is missed opportunity that they didn't show a story where the character aldough he is sick, gets understood, supported and loved. That would have been a stronger message to people with mental illness. I didn't read the book dough.

E Bateria Vidrio I absolutely agree with you. Him ending up alive and finally getting the support would have sent a stronger message to the world

I would have loved that too. To see Finch finally able to deal with his sickness would have made for a more hopeful ending. But I think the director was trying to make us sympathize with Violet. Finch is able to understand and help her in ways others couldn't maybe because of his own experience with mental illness. But when she tries to do the same she fails. I think the director was trying to make us feel her helplessness by keeping the details of his illness in mystery and finally feel her pain on realizing he is gone. I guess in that way the movie is more about the loved ones of those suffering from mental illness who have to cope with their death by looking at the brighter moments they brought in their life. I have not read the book so I am not sure

I liked it. Spoiler alert but the last minutes became too sentimental. Had the film finished after Violet had her talk with her suicidal friend, it would have been better. Perhaps a few of those beautiful landscape shots, but the speech was too much.

But you have to remember that there was a lesson that Finch was teaching Violet...to move on with her life, to be happy and remember those special moments. And that is what the film I believe was trying to express that...in allowing us to see that she did treasure the lessons he taught her. How she loved all the things he showed her, taught her and loved her with all that he could.

@@THGForever1 I see your point, but I'm a bit snobbish about overexplaining. It's like some directors underestimate their audience.

Too much on my plate to go into YA movies, our daughter isn't into them, so I don't bother either usually. Your comment about kids standing up to the bullies is something I agree wholeheartedly with you. It's sad that films/tv portray it that way always, 'if you fight back, you get punished' - it needs to stop because it's a horrible message and in this era of anti-bullying, more important than ever. That's how we've raised our daughter (she's 18 now) and she has lost friends over it but she's true to herself and her morals and I love that. As long you're not harming others in any way, stand up to those who try to hurt you. It's very important to a child's development, to learn they should never accept being pushed around by others, be firm and you'll be strong.

Two things, were's the munchies part? I love the movies and series' reviews but i'm curious about the munchies ☺ I wish all the bright places would have explored and expounded more of Finch's character. I got a sense that he felt like was becoming his father and there's nothing he could do about it. I really would have loved to know more about him given i haven't read the book

That's exactly how I felt about Finch too! I just do the munchies sometimes...when I come across something worthy of sharing. I started out doing them separately, but now I include them in my movie reviews. The last munchie I did was a Godiva Dark Chocolate ganache heart...yum!!

If this movie had a better budget I feel like we would’ve had better friends and family and teacher interactions. It was a good film all in all but it was indeed rushed and I feel like it needed more detail, but i’m a sucker for these type of movies. It just needed more you know.

2:30, 3:31 Perhaps the message here on Finch's character is about control. I interpret his character as suffering from what Psychiatry categorizes as "borderline personality disorder", which can be defined as trouble regulating emotions, or simply impulsivity. Reacting with physical violence isn't right, but not standing up for oneself in the face of injustice isn't good either. It's why I don't like mental health promotion in movies. Too much politics involved.
