Wow - this just really opened up a lot of new directions for me. Thanks so much - really love your videos and they're always bang on what I need to learn.

I have played banjo over a year now but I only took about an hour and a half of lessons for bluegrass then switched to old time songs by myself. I decided to maybe learn some actual chords and I'm glad the short and simple vid is yours.

Thanks Ryan, glad it helped. Sometimes you just need chords to sing to, or to play along with others when don't know the melody. All the best, Andy

Thanks, glad you liked them. Double C might be my favourite tuning, but don't tell the other tunings!

Thank you soooooo much!!!! Whew! This is just so helpful. I have fallen in love with this tuning and now it is so much more useful for playing songs, not just tunes.

Thanks for the comment, I am really pleased this was useful. It was what I needed when starting out, so figured it would be useful. And double C is a great tuning for singing. My voice range works in tunes from A to C so I'll often use it with chords as here. Good for playing along with others too of course.

I have spent the last 5 or so years working out all the 50's 60's and 70's songs out of double C so many cool things to try .That C triad at the fifth fret if brought back to the third is tha cool Bd and at the first fret is an A .. Ring finger @5thfret first string middle finger second string @5 and INdex finger 4th string 4th fret makes a nice easy G7 up to the 7th fret a very usful A7 .Also dont be scared to try C minor or doriqan mode songs .. Martin Carthy's Scarbough Fair is wonderful out of double C tuning as is John Barlycorn and even a modern one like Steve Windwood's "I cant find my way Home " Things I used to do in G sus 4 or Sawmill tuning gDGCD like Maddy Groves are also a breeze .. All the best , Guy

Thanks for the comment. You're right Guy, so many cool things to try. For C minor I often just raise the first string a half step into open C minor tuning. That works really well..... (Or lower the fifth string to that minor third too.) Thanks again!

Glad it's useful. I'm going to do the same for Ruben tuning and Cumberland Gap tuning too. Ruben is f#DF#AD, Cumberland Gap is fDGCD, but you probably know that.....

Any chance you'd be willing to add a video for more chords in double C? I am searching online but the resources are giving me similar chords as this video. Thanks for your kind consideration!

Sure, but I'm "stuck" away from a banjo for a while doing my other passion - mountains..... Let me know what kind of thing you're after if you have something particular in mind? Thanks for the question!

@@cerddoriaethfynyddig Hmm, I think I have figured out enough for now, actually. Thanks again for your videos, and enjoy the mountains.

All I need now is a list of songs I can play in double C tuning. 😊
@cerddoriaethfynyddig2 жыл бұрын
Bearing in mind I have no idea what you like to play, and that you might not have expected me to answer.... (!) Missouri Borderlands, Blackest Crow, Hang me oh Hang me, Down by the Sally Gardens, most Carter family and Johnny Cash and similar 30s-60s country. Mingulay Boat Song, Skye Boat Song..... And on. I like it because my comfortable singing range is usually A through D, and double C adapts across that range. Oh, and Joni Mitchell "River" works a treat too, but I haven't been brave enough to sing it yet!. Have fun!

Haha! I had no idea if you would reply. Thanks. I’ve been struggling to play clawhammer for the last two years, not very successfully. Plus, I just can’t do an F in G tuning ( tiny hands). The chords in double CC are much easier for me and I now need, as well as songs…all good thanks… a couple of folky banjo picking patterns. I’m in the UK and have a history of playing songs in folk clubs with my ukulele, before I started to learn the banjo. Thanks again for replying.

I also play tunes / chords for simple singing in the key of C major but in sawmill tuning gDGCD. The c chord shape is 02002 (numbers = frets - from 5th to 1st strings. F is x3203. G is 00020 is G7 00023, A minor is 02202.) In this tuning you can also lower the 5th string to f, which allows you to play in the key of F easily.... This is one of the things I love about banjo, the tunings all have different voices and tunes that fit them best.

@@cerddoriaethfynyddig It is certainly an amazing instrument. I just wish I could play it better.
