Alessandro Cortini has repeatedly called this his favorite NIN song This is the song Trent was recording when he was first brought into the studio and he was blown away by the production He was feeling a serious case of imposter syndrome around Trent at first and said this song made him realize "This is where I need to be"

This song is so damn good. It was the first song I listened to while diving into NIN and I was completely mesmerized by how unique this song was. And the lyrics alone kind of force an inward AND outward expression. You could look at it asking "why do THEY get all the love in the world?" vs. "why should I get all the love in the world?" It kind of blurs together and is just overall really incredible.

By the way, can I say, I LOVE how they're currently performing this live. With Ilan singing the high "why do you get all the love in the world?" the Ally comes in and supports him, then Trent comes back in which the main line, and then ROBIN starts yelling the "All the love in the world!" and it's a glorious cacaphony showcasing all the band members (except Atticus - who gets stage fright) and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

@4:20- "I think a good film will trust its audience to put pieces together". Referencing "a million miles away" on the cutoff and change. This is yet again another one of mr Reznor's many many lyrical callbacks accompanied with inflection, or some other kind hat tipping emphasis instrumentally. In this instance towards such tracks as 'Hurt' or forwards on the opener of The Slip album. The overarching lyrical themes and callbacks that are riddled throughout the entire works is fascinating in dissection and presumption upon the rediscovery with every future listening. Watching all your videos ixi. Thank you so very much! I'll be playing along with you

Ixi, this is so so great. One of the best musicology videos I’ve seen. I just found your channel today. I’ve loved this song since the album came out and it’s never been explained to me quite WHY I love it until I watched this. I tend to put this album on when I’m cleaning and when that 4/4 drops in everything stops and it’s time to dance through all of the layers that come in, seemingly one at a time. Trent is such a master at layering. As to your question, please keep doing the NIN videos. There is a bit of NIN content out there, but you do this with such passion and it still somehow makes sense for those of us without musical theory training. Please keep it up! I loved it.
@iximusic
@iximusic 4 жыл бұрын
Welcome! It makes me so happy to know so many passionate fans are able to appreciate this amazing music even more because of me rambling about it :) I think about his layers a lot! The second half of "All Time Low" gives me a similar feeling to "All The Love In The World" at the end. The layering and progressive building is very satisfying and hard not to move to! I decided to focus only on NIN's music for awhile - it seems like everyone including me is really enjoying it! I'll start introducing some shorter music theory concept videos too but it's awesome to know that people can enjoy the videos even without that training.

Brian Eno had a set of "tarot" cards that he would use in a production session. If he ever got stuck, he would draw a card and use its message for direction. Apparently, one of the cards said something to the effect: Honour your mistakes as hidden intention. I think that Trent would keep a mistake if he felt it worked after another listen. It does have a bit of a "hippie" vibe towards the end...

As a huge fan of Radiohead, they've a surplus of musical nerd-outs. Would never want to box you in though! I'd watch that too. Of course NIN is a massive success, but you're shedding light on his songs in a new way and adding a lot to the musical discussion around NIN that hasn't been explored as extensively. So thanks! Lastly, whenever Reznor plays with those maj / min 3rds, I always feel like he's mainlining his rock n' roll roots, and by extension, blues. Whenever he ad libs vocal riffs live, it's always straight up rock and roll. "KISS, eat your heart out...I love you" - Trent Reznor's Inner Child
@iximusic
@iximusic 3 жыл бұрын
I'm going to be mostly doing NIN for awhile but I've got the Radiohead, Tool, and Deftones itch coming on. Maybe even a KoRn banger with some freaky mixolydian b6 situation. I agree with you about the minor 3rd feeling bluesy! And sometimes the way he throws in a b5, like in Piggy in the verse bassline, just a little somethin'. Usually that b5 sounds demented and not bluesy. Kind of depends on how he uses it. Or how it uses him! I am really bad with researching artist's lives, histories etc.. I sort of gleaned that Trent's roots were in classical piano and saxophone and they he played some kind of synthy pop stuff in the 80s, but rock too? Haha that inner child joke ;)
@ossicles6
@ossicles6 3 жыл бұрын
@@iximusic oh you're not wrong! He's got the classical, new wave, industrial, and rock always jumbling around up there. In perusing a few interviews where Reznor talks about NIN's live show, the spectacle he puts together, it was KISS that apparently got into his head early on. Ever the eclectic fella. On the 2005 With Teeth tour he brought along Queens of the Stone Age, still building steam from their album Songs for the Deaf. It was a helluva rock show.

I love you for doing this!! In my opinion this one of the best NIN songs. Trent Reznor is just pure genius, he always comes up with so many interesting melodies and very unique harmonic concepts like throwing those dissonant intervals, but somehow managing to make it sound so melodic and elegant, rather than jarring, like in a film score, as you mention :) Funny enough, Trent became a very well respected film composer alongside Atticus Ross. It was about time someone analyzed NIN properly, especially the harmonic aspect, thank you :))

Well I think him cutting himself off is a way of demonstrating a stark and sudden shift in focus - we are listening to his thoughts, and suddenly his perspective shifts from "why does no one love me" to a more bitter and resentful "why do you get all the love in the world". I see it as his way of kind of lifting himself out of depression, where instead of just dwelling on his sadness he is turning it into anger. I like it because it's not an overt, explosive anger but more of a seething, controlled kind of anger, one built on a sense of injustice. He is just repeating the same phrase over and over again almost as though he were trying to convince himself of the sentiment's validity, as opposed to the verses where he is analyzing many aspects of his situation from more of a powerless onlooker's perspective.

I LOVE that you appreciate the imperfections in Trent's singing. It's amazingly expressive. The vulnerability is beautiful. I can't stress enough how distressing it is to be surrounded by people blasting pop music that has the sounds of perfect robots singing synthesized robot voices (autotuned to sterility and beyond, into fucking weirdness that's NOT pleasant, and shouldn't be the fucking NORM!). When will our culture discover that people don't need to look like dolls and sound like robots?? Between the layers of makeup and the autotuning, we have developed a culture of frighteningly insulated falseness in what people think deserves celebrity, or how celebrities should look & sound. (No, I'm not dissing your wild lipstick; I find it easier to take when it's actually an uncommon color for lipstick, because it seems to be entirely for fun and NOT for the "make me look like a doll" issue I am complaining about) The Uncanny Valley has become some kind of new norm for our culture, and it's unsettling per the label on the tin. Life is imperfect. Vulnerability is hot. Be real.

I absolutely love that I to IIIb movement. At the top of my head I can't think of any song that ONLY uses. major chords in this style, but a lot of David Bowie's songs have passages that make extended use of non-diatonic major chords too. I've loved every single video of yours that I've watched, and a few years ago in my own attempts to transcribe some NIN songs I did realize of his "free" use of thirds. I can't help but wonder if there is a non-disclosed blues influence of his that he hasn't spoken about in interviews.

I always loved this song, and you pick up on all the reasons why. I appreciate the way you broke down the voice leading during the bridge with the chords. Keeping a stable range makes things sit very well in an arrangement that is about to get a lot more crowded, and it evokes the close harmonies of a gospel choir. Lyrically, I feel the trick is switching from starry eyed infatuation to resentment as soon as he realizes he’s about to hit you with the biggest cliché in the book. During most of the song he’s mooning over someone who doesn’t seem to reciprocate, and at the end, he decides he’d rather dance, so he takes us to disco church, I may be an atypical NIN fan, but I love With Teeth more than The Fragile, personally, it’s not afraid to be catchy and even fun, but still has so much going on musically and lyrically.

I have so much love for what you do and How you do it; it's wonderful how sincere you are in your feelings, how the appreciation shines through... last month I took a deeper dive into NIN and found so much inspiration and... recognition maybe? something new, something promising, something I'm still riding the wave of and... it's just so wonderful to have you here. as a link to the community and as a You, it's all just so human. I've had Deftones as my favorite band for the last four years and they still bring me ... lots of emotions, comfort among them, and I think as I'm sliding into NIN... I think it's gonna be good. also I've seen you mention Deftones as a possible other music source to analyse and. well, maybe it brought all the three joys together for me but it's... it has made me very happy. that it all came together. something something same recognition. good luck with your work, you are very much appreciated!!!

the chord progression of the end section, is ||: G | Eb/Bb, F | C | Eb non inverted, Bb :||. notice that the bass is matching the electric distorted bass riff ! the highest note of the right hand plays a melody, which is ||: B | G,F | E | G, F :|| which is a very important detail, because it is a part that you can sing after listening to the song ! by the way, he plays those chords one eighth note before the beat. this is a frequent rhythm "secret" of Trent's in NIN songs... i have a text file i'm trying to fill with all the keys of the songs, but those kind of songs make it hard to do. you can email me for this ! thanks for this analysis !
@iximusic
@iximusic 4 жыл бұрын
I do hear the Eb/Bb instead of Bb at the beginning, good catch! Though maybe you can answer this...in this progression, there is a triad + a 4th note in the bass. If the triad itself is inverted, and the bass is in root position, is it still considered an inversion? Because I hear inverted triads at times given what note is highest, but the bass is usually in root position in this progression. Also you can email me the keys at ixitheunicorn@gmail.com if you like :)

@@iximusic i don't know, a piano teacher when dealing with chords, said that it's the bass that says what inversion it is, and the highest note is the melody, i find it pretty logical so i keep this idea. and i have only studied music theory for three years, so basically for advanced stuff i am an autodidact !

The closing coda section has not only an unusual melody vocal (and atypically melodic and major), but then how does does he harmonize and play off of that melody? In genius Trent style! With a cascade of layered parts. God damn the green monster voices in my head. And then they are all silent and we're left alone with just a repeating 🎹 piano. Brilliant.

This might not even be worth mentioning. But I like how organic this album is. Not too much copy and paste recordings like he mentioned. Like the live drums on "The Collector" I like how at the end of this you can hear his fingers press down on the piano keys. Kind of like when the treble is up and you hear fingers sliding to each chord on a guitar!

This is so ingenious, please stick to Nine Inch Nails, you'll have years of content to go through! :-) No, but seriously, I've been a NIN-fan for the majority of my life, and I know all the trivia and lyrics - but since I'm musically illterate, it's such an eye... er... ear-opening experience to have somebody dissect these songs for me and explain them in a way that I can at least follow. Please keep up the work, I've already forwarded your channel to 3 friends, I'm sure the NIN-community at large will appreciate it!

I love this so much! :)

I’ve a lengthy observation, and then a question.
I could be misremembering, but I remember following the NIN website while Trent was working on the album. I seem to remember him initially referring to it as “Bleedthrough” (?) and, interestingly, saying that he would keep each instrument monophonic-essentially, that there wouldn’t be any chords played on a single instrument, and that they would only be spread between instruments. I also seem to remember an update called something like “Bleedthrough is no more!” - wherein he announced the final title, With Teeth. I remember wondering whether that self-imposed musical limitation would be honored. So, the first time I heard this song leading off the album (after running to Tower Records between classes on release day!), I remember thinking “huh, yeah, it seems like each sound is happening one at a time.” And then, at 3:12 (song time, not a timestamp for this vid!), I remember going “whoa, THERE are the chords!” I was walking around with a Discman and probably squawked aloud in the middle of the quad or something. Since then, I’ve always thought of this album (and this song especially) in terms of knowing how to use a self-imposed creative limitation-and in turn knowing how to abandon it. I love that he throws away the monophonic idea at the climax of the first song as if to restate the album’s supersession of its roots. My question is: is there a name for that kind of trick of having a song climax that isn’t really a previous verse or chorus? I’ve read about what one musician called “Terminal Climactic Form,” referring to Tool’s “Ænema” among others, but I’m not sure whether this song fits the bill? Anyway, I love the idea, and I love how this song does more or less that.

He does a similar thing in Pretty Hate Machine 'Down In It' with the bass drum - Downward Spiral 'I do not want this' with layers, and Year Zero 'The Warning' bassline - constantly changing through the song. It's genius! I'd never noticed it in 'All the Love in the world' - amazing spot!

I think I remember reading that main vocal was from a rough demo that Trent recorded at home. Once he got in the studio, he re-recorded them but they just didn't have the same feel so he ended up keeping the demo version. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. But to me, this explains the imperfections (voice cracking, not finishing his sentences) that makes it so great.
