Do you think McCarthy is flowing with the prose of this detail, like an effortless skill, or is he spending dedicated effort to pack each sentence with all of the meaning you uncovered?

For sure McCarty's writing experience is way different than my sample interpretation. He prose is so lyrical. Sound, tone, and rhythm are very important for McCarthy. On the contrary. It is Spanish.

Spanish and it means " to the contrary" so actually she thought HE WOULD COME.

When I taught I sometime would pause and say to my students, “And if the author was here he might be saying, ‘Whoa, you are going way too deep with this interpretation!’” I hope Cormac McCarthy leaves you a comment. Anyway, you failed to point out the use of polysyndeton and what that might mean.
