-Onions, -Cold hardy greens (spinach, kale, mache, lettuce, mustard greens, arugula, etc) -Flowers (not flowers that sprout very fast, like lavender and marigold, coneflower, poppy) -Cold weather herbs (fennel, cilantro, thyme, sage, parsley, rosemary, not basil) -Brassicas (collards, brussel sprouts, cabbage. Keep cauliflower and broccoli inside until the weather has stabilized, about the same time as you plant out your tomatoes) -Nightshades (tomatoes, tomatillos, peppers, etc inside) -Misc. (Radishes, beets, swiss chard, celery, artichokes, asparagus) There's lots of others as well, this is just a list for me and other forgetful people :) Please do watch the video, there is additional info you might want to listen to.

@@gferraro8353 in case he doesn’t answer, you can buy seeds and supplies from the online store anytime, and they have a storefront if you’re in Michigan. I believe they have plans to sell plants later, hence the new greenhouse. I’ve bought seeds online multiple times. Seeds are inexpensive and good, delivery is prompt.

This is one of the most comprehensive videos I have seen on this topic. I live in zone 4b in New Hampshire and we are always on a similar page with you weather-wise. What are the odds- you're one of my favorite teachers! Thank you so much for all your helpful resources!! I have only been gardening a few years (seriously) and already am selling microgreens and other crops during the summer to the restaurant i work at, as well as planning multiple for my family and friends. Couldn't do it without you!! The goodness ripples out again and again. I think of you as in a league with the greats like Charles Dowding. Our generation needs to carry the torch. Keep it up.

If you have a grow shelf or grow room, you can start basil any time of the year. If it gets too big come planting time, you can propagate it into smaller plants. More basil plants is always a good thing.

I always get hopeful when I see these kinds of discussions...and then I look out the window at the two feet of snow still on the ground, and it takes a real leap of faith to imagine it will be gone by the time the seedlings are ready to go out. It seems to be getting harder to predict when last frost date is. Sometimes late May, sometimes early June here in Ontario.
@SilverSaabArc Жыл бұрын
I started my basil 2 weeks ago. You can save seeds by only planting 1 plant, then as it grows take cuttings from it and root them in water to increase your numbers. By May 20th (my last possible frost date) I'll have a bunch of each variety! 😊

The local rabbits browse my marigolds, most happily (for them) toward the end of the season when the flowers are forming seeds. We watch them busily chewing and crunching, and they stare back at us very calmly: "Great spread, folks! Really good stuff! Yummy. Can't eat it *all* right now, but not to worry: we'll be back by sun-up/-down for some more great eating...." I'm very close to the Lake Erie shoreline, and if groundhog predictions were accurate and factual, most of the folks I know would be dancing on air to have (as of February 2nd) *only* six more weeks of winter weather to get through whether they're gardeners or not. And we have pretty much what you've described: Winter just going along and then someone flips a switch and Presto! It's summer, full-on summer! Between winter and summer there is a week of cold, miserable rain we identify as Spring. (Hah!) More seriously, though, thanks so very much for this video. It is an enormous help to me for framing out my sowing and planting times this year; I'd been feeling rather overwhelmed. Good to know it's not too late to start the onions and leeks and that collards and B-sprouts and my beloved cabbages will be all right. Through some miscommunication in this household, we have a huge amount of mâche seeds (several varieties!), far more than we have space for, so I'm figuring some now and some in the cooler fall weather for winter? Thank you, again!

Hey Luke, thank's for the detailed information. It is super helpful. I recently received my first seeds from MIgardener, and am very happy with them. All are doing great!. I also Got potatoes into the ground about ten days ago, and already have sprouts coming up. 25 of 26 Seascape Strawberry plants, planted in a GreenStalk tower are bursting foth with new growth. Thank you a good list. You have encouraged me to do some more sowing. My soil is not frozen, but more a problem waiting for better light levels or the plants can become a bit leggy. I already have carrots and parsnips in. But one thing you missed are snow peas. They do not seem to mind the cold. More problem with being eaten: Rabbits, mice, rats, deer etc etc just love them, so I have plastic bottles over the plants. Here in the UK, out of the next ten day weather forecast we only have one night frost forecast. But they can go on into May and sometimes even into June. Some varieties of headed broccoli, also called calabrese seem to be happy with an early planting, so I suggest that you ask you seed supplier to get some in. I have them inside in modules and they will go outside soon. Again more problem with the critters than the cold. They certainly have to put up with temperature changes. And what about spring onions I think you call them scallions. Are big on the roller coaster temperature changes right through summer.

Curious about the day night temp difference when direct sowing (i.e. I guess the roller coaster you were talking about)? We are getting into the mid & upper 50's regularly during the day but as low as the low 30's at night ... is it still ok to direct sow orcwait another week or two? I.e. early April? It sounds like you plan to plant in larger pots .. great plan for you. I plant 32 at a time on a heat mat. I then up pot to midsized pot. I need to grow my starts to about 2 sets of true leaves before considering replanting in my garden for two reasons. Small and immature plants get decimated by both ground bugs and by the small birds in my neighborhood. Enjoy however you garden and good luck to you.

Because it saves space and sometimes having a tiny plant in a large container isnt good for them, especially if the plant is susceptible to root rot and isnt able to take up extra water. The environment in a container is a bit different than in the ground
