@@binanocht6110 never too late, you could get a greenhouse off amazon for like $100 and start everything in it right now! I put bails of straw all around it and threw a rachetstrap over it, (it would fly away with our wind) filled a 5 gallon bucket up with water put a fish tank heater in it and something to cover it. The plants are loving it and it only adds a few cents onto my electric bill without having to worry about a fire. I"m in zone 4b in the USA so just trying to wait out the weather. I did sow some seeds in my tiny greenhouse (does freeze) and am going to experiment to see if they come up when the weather suits them. A bit like free tomatoes that pop up in my garden when they are ready.
@rickytorres9089 Жыл бұрын
If you don't already, you can take any heating mat, raised beds' heaters, etc to heat the roots. Because your greenhouse is a frost bitting "protector", this should prompt cold hardy crops to grow fairly easily even if you are in such a HARSH zone as 4b.
@Paula_T Жыл бұрын
Same here in western 6a. Still snow on the ground but I'm 'winter sowing' in my cold greenhouse. The plants will comeup when they are ready, and still probably too early to plant outside, but they hold well and are already acclimated.
@rickytorres9089 Жыл бұрын
@@Paula_T Very interesting that they are very adaptive. Must be because you are "evening out" the harshness with your cold greenhouse. Should it get dangerous, you can always throw down simple radiant heat sources like incandescent outdoor Christmas lights, seeds'/propagation heating mats, heating cables used for raised beds, etc. So it's "heated just a BIT".

Should you sow crops in batches and a few weeks apart to ensure you don't harvest everything together for example sow some potatoes this week them wait a few weeks and sow another batch or do you sow everything together and then harvest at different times? Same with tomatoes and spinach. I grew some last year but found I had too much at the time of harvest and had some wastage whereas it would have been better to staggering sowing so I had some more later in the year
@MB-co6qj Жыл бұрын
Depends on the crop! If you're just sowing determinate tomatoes with the same days to maturity, then you'll have a ton at once. Then you would need to stagger them. Or you can pick different dtm, or add in indeterminates and you'll be good to go! On spinach, lettuce etc. you can 'cut and come again' to extend the life instead of yanking the entire plant out. But with short dtm I would definitely succession sow these as well!

I've got a tiny garden, I say garden but more like a building site, about 4m deep by 6m (c. 24sqm) across the front of my southwest facing wall to my flat in Zone 9 on the mid west coast of Scotland. There's about 5-8cm of topsoil then building rubble. So I'm going for raised beds which will take up about 12sqm, maybe 16sqm. So I'll not be producing much, herbs are a definite and lots of them. Is it even worth considering anything else, anyone?
@donnastevens8832 Жыл бұрын
Try and grow stuff vertically as well as in raised beds. And remember that pots and containers are simply small raised beds. Hanging baskets can grow veggies too. And look for smaller dwarf varieties of things like peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, add in things as baby plants and micro greens. Also think in levels or tiers. You will be amazed at what you can grow even in such a small space.
