I see this as a layer of development. Once I have this down, I can move on to the individual chords. For me at least, as a late beginner/intermediate player, this is an excellent way of progressing and making great music. The goal is to be able to solo over all the changes but for now a few less is helpful!!!

My approach is to look over the tune like you have. After I have familiarized myself with the changes I put on backing tacks and start improvising. When I fist started out I had no backing tracks and I'd tape the changes and then play over them. I'd start with pentatonic's/blues, I'd then add in the major, minor, dominant scales, and then I'd start altering, I'd start altering the five chords. I'd look for the pivots also. Nowadays, younger people have it allot easier then we did. I always learn the melodies of any tunes I will tackle. I listen to the vocals for melodies. In this tune. " All The Things You Are," I use E pentatonic minor all over the the A section, and I ill use A pentatonic minor in some spots. In terms of guitar, I love Howard Roberts Version, with his magic band. I have recorded Joe pass's virtuoso version of this song, SOLO GUITAR note for note, last summer. I made myself a promise, that when I had the time I would do that. This was at 30 yrs old. Im 58 now and when Covid hit, I finally had the time to learn this. It was very daunting and took me two months to memorize. I have provided a link below for those interested. This was a very good video MIKKO Thank - you. instagram.com/p/CKEFhKuA4zb/

As usual this is great, man. I used to only be able to play like this, then I got completely caught up with playing chord by chord, really vertical chord tone stuff. I needed reminding that there's still the chunking approach. It's so liberating! Thanks.

Glen McGlone thank you! I think it's a good idea to back and forth between a vertical and horizontal approach when practising. 😁🤓

I agree 100%.The focus should be on the music; be able to listen other players and express yourself fluently and relaxed. Great lesson!

Thank you. Beautiful Love for sure. Darn is a little trickier. More "chordy". I'll see what I can do.
