I wouldn't change anything about the concept, it's spot on. There's so many teachers live and in YT who just talk about licks and stuff that gets you nowhere. You are the real deal. And please don't ever start to over-edit your videos. An acoustic piano, camera and someone who knows what he's talking about is all that's needed (well, a bit of cutting never hurts). Maybe do a jazz version of some recent and popular tune to "blow up" the channel? I think especially new movie tunes are great to get a lot of search hits. I know it's a bit cheap but hey, that's how it goes.
@KentHewittpiano888 жыл бұрын
+RedwolfPsx Thanks....that's an interesting suggestion, and I might try it out. I did do a video on Billy Joel's NY State of Mind, which I would call pop, and also a country- style tune called Last Date.
@SafeRetirement8 жыл бұрын
Yes, we need to promote the channel. If anyone has a website perhaps link it, or facebook you can like it. Redwof's idea is right on too. It's sometimes about the search engine hits. Hmm... jazz version of Disney movie tunes? Great work Kent.

I know this comment is old as fuck but here is my suggestion for a modern song you could do a versión of: strangers by nature by Adele, a reeeeeally great tune and with great possibilities to "jazzify" it. Btw this videos always help me so much when having to arrange a tune for piano. I checked them out a lot when i was preparing for my music college entrance exam, and now that i'm in, i still find them really usefull. Keep them coming!

I can’t really play the piano much at all and 99% of what you do goes over my head like a hurricane but boy it’s still just great fun listening and watching you and those sounds you make especially with that tune all the things you are just blow me away, they are sublime moments that don’t last long enough but keep me watching and listening. You must live on that piano. Fabulous thanks for the entertainment.

I played string bass and guitar for 50 years but not as a pro but I have developed my chops mentally. Especially syncopation which is giving me a strong independent left hand. Now I have been studying jazz piano for about a year with Kent's book and watch his videos. Just listening to Kent's talking about his music a jazz phiosophy is quite revealing. I look forward to flying out for a few days of private lessons. Just a little more woodsheading first. LOL One thing I love with his style is that his cord voicing alterations is always so efficient. Watching the way his hands flow is so damn ergonomic. I have noticed this on all his song renditions. Now that I am starting to reharminize and adding my own movement and voicing I always try to be effecient concerning my hands flowing like Kent. This is just a small thing but considering the fact that there are a million ways to Express music Kent seems to keep things that are complicated always quite elegant and understated. This is why his expression is so fruitfull. Pros in any field always make is look so easy.

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video over the years. But I love it !!! All your stuff. The chordal playing with drop 2’s and block chord techniques. The beginning and ending of your lines, tension - release!! You say it’s a lot of work. Yes it is. I’ve played off and on for 70 years- more on “ now in later life. So good!! I keep practice journals. I try to stay as organized and follow a routine on all songs I learn and I revisit over the years and keep trying more things. It absolutely never ending amd I will never ever be satisfied. That has to be ok. If I lived near you I would beg you for personal one on one lessons. You are the best!!! Fabulous playing and content of this analysis! So on the mark. Your comments on improvisation, the role of intuition, phrasing, call and response are so authentic, and your near "effortless" playing is beautiful, imbued with that cosmic flow. Kent you have my attention always have, your younger peers are doing 'live' utube question and answer gigs so I suppose that is a suggestion on getting more viewership. I try to study all aspects of music I like, its your taste in particular jazz tunes that keeps my attention, they call this the 'attention economy' what you do, keep doing what you like to do, I like seeing your motions on the piano, it helps myself. Many of us still are grasping all the jargon as far as theory, and its sinking in with your efforts

Liked that you put the minor 2 of the five Dominant (A7 ( which is Tritone Sub for Eb. The statement you made actually helped me to decode sophisticated jazz songs. In fact..this tutorial is doing that. When you said that A7 is the 5. So we are very temporarily playing in D.. ( Dmaj7 (Emin7 ) F#min7 Gmaj7 (A7)..) So this tells us our Emin7(E G B D) is what we play...and go down to the Tritone sub Db7..(Db F Ab Cb).. I notice that the E>Db ,the G note> F..Etc. The tritone Db7 nicely goes down to Cmaj7. Then Cmin7..oh my head hurts. I'm texting this.

Wonderful stuff, Kent. I have a suggestion, which is to make a distinction between a #9 chord and an alt chord.
@KentHewittpiano885 жыл бұрын
Are you asking to make that distinction in a video? An alt chord such as C7alt is leaving it up to the musician to alter whatever intervals he chooses. Since there may be a number of different choices, you can decide which notes to alter, based on your personal taste. Bill Evans often uses a dominant #9 chord in place of a minor 7th.

Kent Hewitt, all the videos are wonderful, and in all the things YOU are , you are generous, clear, musical and inspiring.I don't know where to begin thanking you.RE the controversy and speculation on the little intro that everybody uses for"All the Things You Are"....It was used on a recording of the standard on Feb 28, 1945 by a Dizzy Gillespie sextet co-led by Dizzy and Charlie Parker. The pianist was Clyde Hart, and Remo Palmieri , Slam Stewart, and Cozy Cole played guitar, bass,and drums , respectively. I wonder if Gillespie did not dictate the intro, played by Hart almost identically to how you play in video ( you add a note, I think). Was Bud Powell already using the inro, but not recorded yet 1945? Dunno. All subsequent Birdversions use it...and most pianists. Hampton Hawes and Bill Evans refer to it, without playing intro exactly, on some recordings. As you know!I really like your explanations of block chords, drop 2, using metronome ( I'm gonna get one and set on 2 & 4 !),selected progressions and voicings, and solos in various styles. Everything you do is golden. Even your humor is serious,and you generously share so much clarity. Thank you for doing what you do.It makes me want to try to play, and I bet you have that effect on a lot of people.Your explanation of how Bill Evans and Scott Lafaro worked out "My Foolish Heart" with those beautifulrootless voicings for piano...that alone is worth a trillion dollars.And please excuse my discography thing above, but I think it's accurate. A last thought: Lee Konitz and Lennie Tristano sure have done a lot of nice things with "All the Things You Are." They internalized it, and made it like breathing, so that it took them different natural places every visit. To a degree notable even for Jazz.

+Terencio jazzpiano Terencio, thanks so much for a most appreciated note! You honor me, sir, with your words. All the attributes you offer are very important to me so I believe that you are the kind of fellow that I would love to hang out with, if I could. There is actually a video (or maybe an audio) of Bill and Scott working out those changes...have you heard it? I had the great fortune to live near New York City, so I heard many of the greats when growing up...Bill Evans, Miles. Duke. Ella , you name it. It is a privilege to pass on my knowledge in any way I can and not in a clumsy way. So this experience, I hope, is sharpening me up!I'd love to correspond with you more, so please email me at kenthewitt@hotmail.com. Where are you located?

+Kent Hewitt Kent, You are very kind to pay personal attention to interested people, meeting them more than halfway if necessary ! I notice this consistently in your videos and in your comments and asides.This is MUCH appreciated by me and I'll bet many others. So as not to clutter your comments I will respond via your email...But Forgive me another random observation: your sense of humor is vital to your style, and I particularly get a kick out of the "altered dominant ego" you have allowed occasional equal-time to ! A great way to kid me out of my negativity, and to get me to admit that I am connecting with some of what you are conveying."Alt-ego" is a reminder that attitude and receptivity is part of learning, which is an endless journey , consciously choosing to feed the intuition things to work on.I heard Bill Evans Trio once in 1965, Village Vanguard Sunday matinee, every set. A life changing experience, and I was already an Evans fan. But the direct experience is indelible. And it makes me appreciate your videos on " My Foolish Heart," " A Time for Love," and the lick in 12 keys which I just copied out and will practice. I love the sound of block chords and like several other commenters, would like to hear more. Evans liked drop 2 variation, and had ways of accompanying a right hand line so that it feels like blocks, but is ...different, so expressive. Oh, yes, I have heard the tape of Evans working up "My Foolish Heart," moving it to A. It's like being a fly on the wall at mt Olympus !Possible idea: Some of the Bud Powell things that are not in books, to my knowledge, like "Reets and I,""Strictly Confidential." Or a block chord lesson using Duke Ellington's "What Am I Here For?", or"Robbins Nest" a la Hank Jones. I work on these things, but seem to get just so far toward how should be played.Again, thank you. AND YOUR SENSE OF WHAT TO TEACH SEEMS IMPECCABLE. I was just throwingout some stuff I have been thinking about. Just keep doing what you do !

I think the intro is from Charles Parker`s recording - great version of the song, Mr KH, you rule!

It's a classic intro that most musicians play. Someone else told me that it was Parker's and then I heard the recording....but I didn't know that when I made the video...thanks!

HI Kent. The intro to the tune sounds like a quote from "I'm Hip" by Dave Frishberg (and maybe he himself was quoting something else in that tune!) Another very enjoyable video. Getting a lot out of these. Thanks

So there's always whats next... the idea of taking your melodic arcs or contours across the bar so that your phraseology isn't constrained by barlines or sections AABA etc. So that your melodic lines are always crossing bar lines. I.E. beginning and ending in odd unexpected locations. This lends a Jarrett like thing to our hard won harmonic logic. I don't remember who called it playing space but it's fun. I'm not saying you're not already doing that somewhat most players do. But bringing or re-bringing it to your attention will always bring interesting changes in any good player.
@KentHewittpiano883 жыл бұрын
All good improvisors have a different approach to the art of it. There are studies on what beat to start a phrase on and where to end...the important thing is to create good melodic phrases with a flow from beginning to end...how long it should be is very personal. ...write to me for more on this.

Db7#9 to C7#9.. Good point about that you had to to have a major third and a minor 3rd ( that is a #9). That is a cool sounding altered chord..going down a chromaticaly from Db7#9to C7#9..nice..
@KentHewittpiano884 жыл бұрын
Bill Evans uses that chord a lot in place of a minor 7th.

Hi Mr Hewitt. Your tutorials are really gifts. Thank you so much. Please correct me if im wrong .At 05.04 , Youre explaning the first chord of the song which is Fm7. To make it altered i see the #9 which is melody note, ab, argumented 5, which is c#. That's ok. But im lost for major third. You reharmonized the Fm7 to F7 first i thought. Greetings from İstanbul, Turkey.
@KentHewittpiano885 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky chord particularly if the left hand plays the b3 right below the natural 3 in the right hand. A dominant 7th #9 always has to have a major 3rd in the chord somewhere...and usually an octave and 1/2 step below the #9 which is the same note as a b3.
@gokselcanerli5 жыл бұрын
@@KentHewittpiano88 Got it i think thanks. As you said in video, second chord was altered in same way. Particularly when melody note is already b3, altering related minor chord to dom7 altered gives more tention and sound turns from boring minor 7 to great jazzy sound. Added to my practice list. You are king master sir!. Thank you.

Thank you again for this video Kent. I have been practising this a lot this winter, going from stride piano, arpeggios to the diminished scale that I have picked up again lately, after giving it some rest. It's a great project you have going on with uploading these videos. After having looked at the diminished video -are you going to do something similar on augmented chords? I think it's an interesting subject.

I see your personality, and definitely it's more fun. I enjoy your jokes too. I'll look into Horace Silver. If you recommend him, I might like him as well. I need to hear some pretty melodies in the improvisations, otherwise it's boring. Anybody else you can recommend?
@lucas345408 жыл бұрын
+jazzutako I'm not Kent, but if you are looking for pretty melodies in improvisation, definitely check out Bill Evans. His version of "Lucky to be Me" from Everybody Digs Bill Evans is one of the most beautiful piano pieces out there, in my opinion.

+jazzutako Thanks, Lucas. I love that when a listener responds to another listener. Then we can get a conversation going. Of course, Bill Evans is one the great melodic improvisers. But also I'd have to put Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, and Horace Silver on that list, as well as so many others. It's all personal your individual taste and who you relate to.
