Provenance is important - the previous owners and chain of owners count. The Snowdons (David and/or Sarah) sold the Poltimore tiara (a new acquisition) instead of the Lotus Flower tiara or the Turquoise tiara, and the Lady Mount Stephen diamond riviere (gifted to Queen Mary) instead of the King George VI riviere. The Lady Mount Stephen reviere was older and longer but the King (George VI) himself gifted the other riviere to his wife the Queen. Source: The Court Jeweller

About the wedding tiara of crown princess Mary and the fact that it gets somewhat lost in the veil....I think you might have missed the importance of the veil. That veil has an enormous importance for the family both sentimentally and historically. It was made for princess Margret of Connaught for her wedding to prince Gustaf-Adolf of Sweden in 1905. Their daughter princess Ingrid brought the veil to Denmark as a part of her wedding trousseau when she married crown prince Fredrik in 1935. The veil is made of the finest handmade irish lace and is enormously valuable. If you could find enough skilled lacemakers today....the price for a large veil like that would be over a million dollars just for the salarys. Lacemaking at that level is incredibly time consuming and skilled work. I understand that you focus on the tiaras.....but for weddings in scandinavian royal family’s......the veil is just as important (if not more) than the tiara. Just love your work and i hope you do not get offended by this rant, i just wanted to clarify something that might be hard to understand and is often misunderstood when royal brides from my corner of the world are discussed. Keep up the great work and good luck with the channel!

So glad you found it interesting. A veil like that is truly a great work of art and it would take a really skilled lacemaker a hard days work to make a square inch of it......and there are yards and yards of it. For a royal bride wearing a tiara will become part of her official life.......but a priceless veil like that she will only be able to wear on her wedding day.
@Ebelitha Жыл бұрын
In fact it was quite an honour that Queen Margrethe allowed Crown Princess Mary to wear that veil, since it is only supposed to be worn by the brides from the royal family, such as Benedicte and Anne Maries daughters. Crown Princess Mary is actually the only bride marrying into the family that has been allowed to wear it.

I love the Ruby tiara that Crown Princess Mary wears. Truthfully, I believe that the alterations she made to it are beautiful. The way she has consolidated the leaves and berries has brought the tiara to prominence. When she first wore it, it stretched around her head. However, the rubies and diamonds weren't very visible. You could see them, but not very well. Now that they are consolidated, they stand out, especially in CP Mary's dark hair. The embroidered leaves that the Princess of Wales wore to Charles III coronation reminded me a lot of this tiara.

Great video❤ Actually there are "only" 4 sets called crownjuwels here in Denmark. In 1746 queen Sofie Magdalene decided in her will that " there are so few juwels in this family and no crownjuwels" so her juwels would stay in the family and always be available for the queens in the future to wear. So the queen doesn't own them, Denmark sort of does. During time the juwels have been turned into different pieces by the different queens, but always belonging to Denmark. Of course the queen has lots of other private juwels❤

Every kingdom should have Crown jewels that get passed down to each consecutive monarch. This creates history and a sense of permanence that both the people and the monarchs can derive comfort from. If members of any RF want to have a personal inventory of jewelry, including tiaras, that's fine, too, but they run the risk of losing it to inheritance taxes. I don't believe such pieces that hold long-term familial or any kind of historical significance should be taxed. Governments tax and spend way too much anyway.

@@Brembeliawell the wealthy should be taxed, but they belong to the country for the royal family to use, like a permanent loan, as multiple royal families have. Some of these jewels they never really owned in the first place. They’ve travelled through many royal and non royal collections and houses. And this video isn’t even the full collection. Brittany, just a brilliant production with this video, really. Love how you began AND ended this video with the historical affirmation., "We don't count the carats. We count the centuries." Embedded in that quote is the clear declaration that the piece of jewellery isn't respected for its cold, hard cash value--but its historical provenance of family and country. A profound clarity of sentiment. So well done! (By The Way: Since Crown Princess Mary wasn't wearing her necklace across her bust--he was trying to get a look at Her Royal Jewels--BOTH of them, AND SHE KNEW IT, TOO! Like the rest of us ladies who've experienced the creepy feeling of lingering stares on a particular piece of anatomy, Mary uncomfortably looks at him, he turns away, and she places her hand across her chest. Great video! It is wonderful to see video clips showing the tiaras in action. PMarie’s lily tiara is an interesting concept but the amethysts are sadly almost invisible. They blend into her dark hair. If only the designer could have lifted those stones higher up the tiara’s design, the lovely purple gems could be admired. It’s a missed opportunity, imho. My favourite of all the Danish tiaras is the Floral Aigrette and Queen Margrethe wears it creatively and majestically. Last thought: I think Mary’s dark hair could showcase the gold “novelty” tiaras. I doubt she would wear the full Golden poppies headpiece but perhaps she might fasten a few - say, 3- of the individual flowers in a lovely low chignon. It could be quite beautiful like that but the full piece gives me the shudders.

I love them, too, and I think the gold will contrast beautifully with Mary's dark hair. The Golden Poppies just need some minor adjustment/reconfiguration to make them a modern but outstanding headpiece. Even though Queen Margrethe is an artist (costume design) herself, she seems to not grasp the correct, more sophisticated placement of the Golden Poppies on her head/in her coiffure. Mary will amend that, I'm sure.

The golden poppies would look stunning on either a tiara frame or a circlet. Though the style would need to be augmented with the other poppies in the set. Another option would be as a necklace or in a shorter grouping as a trailing brooch worn on one shoulder.

Much like she didn't get to entirely celebrate her 50th jubilee as it was intended, the Queen sadly didn't get to celebrate her 80th birthday either with a big occasion, because of COVID. Instead, the Danes rallied and celebrated her social distance style, by the media airing videos of the Danes singing happy birthday and just celebrating her all day. And despite she couldn't come out on the balcony as is tradition on her birthday, she did make an appearence at the entrance to wave at the crowd who had assembled in front of Fredensborg Palace. It does happen that tiaras find their way back to the main line. The daughters of one of the Queen's cousins put one of their grandmother, Queen Alexandrine's tiaras up for auction a few years ago and it was sold to someone unknown, and it was feared it had disappeared out of the country. But then a Danish tv program aired where the Queen opened up her jewelry box to show and there the tiara suddenly was. The turquoise daisy bandeau has a number of matching jewels that comes with it and the jewels were given to Crown Princess Mary for her 50th birthday. She has worn them a couple of times since, but it is unknown whether she has been given the tiara. And yes, they do go back to Catherine the Great. Not exactly true Sweden elected their first King in 1523. They had been their own monarchy prior to the Kalmar Union, during which they were ruled by Danish Kings. They decided to kick out the King who had stolen the Swedish throne from their previous King and wanted a similar union with Margrete the I as Norway had and from that the Kalmar Union was born. After the Swedish War of Liberation in 1520-1523, Gustav Vasa was declared King. The ruby diamond tiara has been modified by almost every person who has owned it, since Desirée Clary. So it doesn't have the original look anymore at all and I would think it's only appropriate that it fits the person who wears it. It was King Christian the VIII who commissioned the emerald tiara and jewels and was married to Queen Caroline Amelie. Christian the VII ruled from 1766 to 1808 and was married to Queen Caroline Mathilde. You definetely should look into Christian the VII's story. He was Denmark's "Mad King George". The interesting story about the emeralds and the crown jewels in general is, that they were testamented by Queen Sophie Magdalene to the Danish State. She felt sorry that Denmark did not have a Crown Jewel collection and therefore had it put in her will, that her jewels were to be the property of the State and only worn by the current Queen. Another interesting story about a specific piece in the Crown Jewel collection, is a pearl necklace the Queen often wear. No one knows exactly when it is from, but it is assumed it was owned by the daughter of King Christian the IV, Leonora Christine, who was named a traitor by her brother, King Frederik the III, and imprisoned in the Blue Tower of Copenhagen Castle for 22 years. The necklace got a revival by Queen Ingrid. When she found out the pearls were darkening, she asked for it to be brought to her and she wore it for a long time, even slept with it, to give the pearls their white color back. Thank you so much for this video. Great to see my royal family be honored here!!!

Love the one with the rubys that was redesigned. Reminds me of the one Catherine had on the corronation.

I like that you are covering other European royals more in both your channels. I don't know a lot about the Asian royals. Can you do a couple of videos: one about the jewelry and tiaras and others about the history and line of succession of those royal houses since you said you will a PhD in history someday (are males more important in the line of succession in Japan and other countries? I heard that a princess lost her title because she married a commoner).

Agree, the golds are unflattering on Margarethe. The skull ornament: bugs included= off putting. I could see one or two of the flowers attached at the back of a down but pulled back hairstyle? Needs reconfiguring for sure. Don’t favor the comb. Looks too insubstantial overall. Needs to be melded with a real tiara structure maybe? or, made into a necklace? Thoughts ?
