What I loved about Midnight Special is the bands actually got up there and played live . No miming or lip syncing .

Actually there was some mining and lip-syncing throughout the years. When Slade were on the show they lip-sync to 2 songs . Why I don't know. Also there was a couple of singers on there that sang to backing tracks but their vocal was live . Recently they just aired a midnight special episode that was hosted by Peter noone and it was filmed out in Trafalgar square in England and most of the bands were lip-syncing . Some of the singers were singing live to their own backing track and it sounded doubled up on the vocals . I believe Jeff Lynne did that with ELO when they were performing on that episode in Trafalgar. But David Essex sang both his songs live over a studio track. Even the Robin trower band were mining to their own studio track because you could hear two guitars. Check it out . 😊

Initially the bands were playing live, but as time went on the station went to lip synching to keep the show within the time constraints of the program. When the bands would go off & started jamming it of course would cut down on the other bands allotted time.

I'm envious...I would have loved to have gone....but too young to go myself and no one would of taken me ...I remember me and my family were waiting in a Jack n the box drive thru...and hearing the promo for the concert at the Los Angeles forum...my dad always had a disgusted look on his face when he saw or heard anything to do with Alice Cooper back in those days ..so there's no way I could have ever gone...but that's incredible you saw them...!

Saw them live April 14th 1974...Montrose opened for them. Then me and some buddies made the trip to England in 2009 for their 40th anniversary concert and caught 2 of the shows. What a great experience!!!!!

What was unusual about MTH compared with most other rock bands of this period (early 70s) was the inclusion of two keyboard players. I can’t think of any other rock band that did this. Go on enlighten me good people. Yes and ELP both had one superb player on keys. * In May 1973, following Verden Allen's departure, the band were augmented by two keyboard players. Former Love Affair member Morgan Fisher joined as keyboardist and Mick Bolton joined on Hammond Organ.

PRICELESS. Discovered Ian and the boys back in "77" in high school in a friends parents garage. We used to enjoy a little mother nature and rock into the night. One of the guys in the group was an aspiring guitarist and he got pretty good at covering old Mott. Miss dem boys a lot. Great memories.

Thanks, I was wondering who the heck the guitarist was since Mick Ralph played the original lead. Must have been on his way to Bad Co by the time this aired. Completely different lineup and arrangement as Hunter was on the keys, Ralph’s on guitar and there’s some nice sax fills. Great song!

@@jbyoung7397 Mick had indeed left the band by the time this song came out. That's Andy Mackay from Roxy Music on sax. Luther Grosvenor (aka Ariel Bender) was in Spooky Tooth prior to Mott. Mott's original keyboardist, Verden Allen had left the band after "All the Young Dudes". Morgan Fisher had just joined the band, and they were augmented with another keyboardist, as well (Mick Bolton at first, then Blue Weaver) for live performances.

I was fortunate to see Mott at the Santa Monica Civic - my 2nd concert (1st was Cal Jam the weekend before, I was 15, ordered not to g, did anyway, and got in BIG trouble. WORTH IT!!). They were an INCREDIBLE band, and Ian Hunter one of the greatest front men. Weird they're best known for a Bowie song, though Hunter is an INCREDIBLE song writer and he's STILL doing it.

We had to rely on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" here in the UK for a well produced format for bands, but it was mostly just in a TV Studio, much prefer an audience in the show.

Saw them on the 1974 tour, Kansas was backup filling in for Queen that canceled. Can you imagine Queen backing up Mott on that tour. I remember seeing this when it originally aired.If I'm not mistaken, they also played,"Drivin' Sister",which was just as good as this.Mott at their peak.

I saw this band at my very first rock concert in Chicago earlier that year when they opened for New Riders of the Purple Sage. Been a big fan for the last 50 years.
